Nuclear structure of 157 Sm via π›½βˆ’decay of 157 Pm

Excited states of the neutron-rich nucleus 157 Sm were populated through the π›½βˆ’decay of 157 Pm , which has a tentatively assigned ground-state spin and parity of 𝐽 πœ‹ =(5/2 βˆ’ ). Over 30 levels have been observed, 16 of which are new, and over 45 new 𝛾-ray transitions have been placed in the level scheme. An evolution in the ground-state configurations for 𝑁 = 95 nuclei from 5/2 βˆ’ ⁒[523] (Er/Yb), to 5/2 + ⁒[642] (Dy), to 3/2 βˆ’ ⁒[521] (Sm/Gd) can be explained based on increasing deformation from 𝑍 = 70 to 𝑍 = 62 and the fact that these three orbitals are energetically close to each other at deformations near 𝛽 2 β‰ˆ 0.25–0.3. Finally, tentative spin and parity assignments are made for most of the states below 1500 keV based on the decay properties of the levels and using excitation-energy systematics of the various orbitals observed in 𝑁 = 95 nuclei.

Nuclear structure of 157 Sm via Ξ² – decay of 157 Pm

Excited states of the neutron-rich nucleus 157 Sm were populated through the Ξ² – decay of 157 Pm, which has a tentatively assigned ground-state spin and parity of J Ο€ = (5/2 – ). Over 30 levels have been observed, 16 of which are new, and over 45 new Ξ³-ray transitions have been placed in the level scheme. An evolution in the ground-state configurations for N = 95 nuclei from 5/2 – [523] (Er/Yb), to 5/2 + [642] (Dy), to 3/2 – [521] (Sm/Gd) can be explained based on increasing deformation from Z = 70 to Z = 62 and the fact that these three orbitals are energetically close to each other at deformations near Ξ² 2 β‰ˆ 0.25 – 0.3. Tentative spin and parity assignments are made for most of the states below 1500 keV based on the decay properties of the levels and using excitation-energy systematics of the various orbitals observed in N = 95 nuclei.

Determination of the spins and parities for the $0$$^{+}_{4}$ and $0$$^{+}_{5}$ states in 100 Zr

Two 0 + states at 1294.5 and 1774.0 keV, together with three 2 + and one 4 + levels, were identified or unambiguously spin-parity assigned for the first time in 100 Zr utilizing Ξ³-ray spectroscopy and Ξ³-Ξ³ angular correlation techniques with the Gammasphere spectrometer, following the Ξ²Β― decay of neutron-rich, mass separated 100,100m Y isotopes. Comparisons with recent Monte Carlo Shell-Model (MCSM) calculations indicate that these two states are candidates for the bandhead of a sequence in a shape-coexisting spherical minimum predicted to be located around β‰ˆ1500 keV. According to the measured relative B(E2) relative transition probabilities, the $0$$^{+}_{5}$ state exhibits decay properties which more closely align with those predicted for a spherical shape, while the $0$$^{+}_{4}$ level is suggested to be associated with a weakly-deformed shape similar to one related to the $0$$^{+}_{2}$ state.

Structure of the high-spin, 𝛽-decaying state in the neutron-rich nucleus 146 La

Excited structures in 146 Ce were populated in 𝛽 decay of the high-spin state in the neutron-rich nucleus 146 La. The beam was produced by the Californium Rare Isotope Breeder Upgrade (CARIBU) facility at Argonne National Laboratory, reaccelerated by the ATLAS accelerator, and implanted on a moving-tape system in the middle of the GAMMASPHERE array. The decay scheme of the high-spin, 𝛽-decaying state in 146 La was revised with respect to previous studies and evaluated nuclear data. Here, the structure of 146 La is discussed in the framework of the deformed Nilsson model and systematics of known quasiparticle structures in the region.

Triaxiality and the nature of low-energy excitations in Ge 76

The deformation properties of the low-lying states in 76 Ge have been investigated following a safe energy Coulomb excitation measurement with the GRETINA tracking array and CHICO2 heavy-ion counter at the ATLAS accelerator facility at Argonne National Laboratory. A comprehensive set of transition and static E2 matrix elements were extracted from the measured differential Coulomb cross-sections, and compared with results of configuration interaction shell-model calculations and computations carried out within the framework of the generalized triaxial rotor model. The remarkable agreement between the calculated and experimental data supports a near-maximum triaxial deformation for the ground state of 76 Ge. Additionally, the degree of softness of the asymmetry in 76 Ge and 76 Se was investigated using rotational invariants generated from configuration interaction shell-model wave functions computed with the jj44b and JUN45 effective interactions. The resulting invariants are shown to be consistent with a stiff triaxial deformation in 76 Ge and a predominantly soft triaxial potential for 76 Se, in agreement with the conclusions of recent works by this collaboration.

Ξ½i 13/2 structures in 155 Sm and 159 Gd: Supporting evidence of a Z = 60 deformed subshell gap

Maximal ground-state deformation should occur when both proton and neutron Fermi surfaces are located at midshell. However, subshell gaps that stabilize large deformation can exist at proton or neutron values other than midshell. One such gap may occur at Z = 60 in the rare-earth region, as the energy of the first 2 + states in even-even nuclei are often lowest in an isotonic chain for neodymium (Z = 60) rather than the midshell isotopes of dysprosium (Z = 66). Further evidence of this deformed gap has now been observed by investigating the signature splitting systematics of the Ξ½i 13/2 bands found in the odd-N, rare-earth nuclei. Furthermore, these were aided by the present observation of the Ξ½i 13/2 band in 159 Gd and the confirmation of the same structure in 155 Sm via the transfer of a neutron from a 160 Gd beam to a 154 Sm target.

Possible quenching of static neutron pairing near the N=98 deformed shell gap: Rotational structures in 160,161 Gd

A 160 Gd beam was accelerated to an energy of 1000 MeV and, separately, bombarded thick targets of 154 Sm and 164 Dy in order to observe neutron-rich, rare-earth nuclei via deep-inelastic collision processes. Gammasphere was utilized to observe g-ray emissions. Here, many new states and transitions were observed in 160 Gd as a result of so-called "unsafe" Coulomb excitation. The ground-state band in 160 Gd has been extended to I Ο€ = 20 + and a rotational band based on the K Ο€ = 4 + state, previously associated with a hexadecapole vibration, was observed up to 18 + . The quasiparticle configuration of the K Ο€ = 4 + band has been determined, and its unusual alignment behavior may result from a possible quenching of static neutron pairing. In addition, the band based on the [523]5/2 quasineutron orbital in 161 Gd was extended from 11/2 – to 33/2 – , and also displays the same unusual alignment behavior.

Spin-trap isomers in deformed, odd-odd nuclei in the light rare-earth region near $N=98$

Masses of neutron-rich, odd-odd Pm, Eu, and Tb nuclei near N = 98 were measured using the Canadian Penning Trap mass spectrometer at the Californium Rare Isotope Breeder Upgrade (CARIBU) facility. High-resolution mass measurements yielded the discovery of spin-trap isomers at N = 97 in Tb 162 , and in the N = 99 isotones of Pm 160 and Tb 164 . Furthermore, no evidence of long-lived isomers were observed at N = 95 in Eu 158 , at N = 97 in Pm 158 , nor at N = 101 in Eu 164 and Tb 166 . Here, these experimental observations are compared to results from multiquasiparticle blocking calculations.

High- K , two-quasiparticle states in Gd 160

Excited states in Gd 160 were populated via Ξ² decay from the low- and high-spin isomers in Eu 160 . The high-spin, K Ο€ = 5 - state feeds several two-quasiparticle levels, as well as a sequence associated with a Ξ³ vibration and a K Ο€ = 4 + , hexadecapole vibrational structure. The decay scheme was significantly improved with the observation of new transitions and states when compared with the two competing level schemes from over four decades ago. Configuration assignments for some of the multiquasiparticle levels have been suggested, based upon decay properties, systematics from neighboring nuclei, and comparisons with theoretical calculations. Finally, in addition, 15 new low-spin states and approximately 60 new transitions were observed resulting from the decay of the low-spin Eu 160 isomer.

Longitudinal Wobbling Motion in Au 187

The rare phenomenon of nuclear wobbling motion has been investigated in the nucleus 187Au. A longitudinal wobbling-bands pair has been identified and clearly distinguished from the associated signature-partner band on the basis of angular distribution measurements. Theoretical calculations in the framework of the particle rotor model are found to agree well with the experimental observations. This is the first experimental evidence for longitudinal wobbling bands where the expected signature partner band has also been identified, and establishes this exotic collective mode as a general phenomenon over the nuclear chart.
