Operational Experience of a Cryomodule Test Stand for LCLS-II Cryomodules

CMTS1 (cryomodule test stand 1) at Fermilab was built to test cryomodules built for the LCLS-II beamline at SLAC and is currently testing cryomodules for LCLS-II-HE, the high energy upgrade to LCLS-II. The first cryomodule test was in 2016 and to date over 30 cryomodules have been tested here. This talk will highlight operational experience of the vacuum systems including insulating, coupler, and a low particulate beamline vacuum system. It will focus on the problems that have come up over the years, their solutions, and mitigations put in place to prevent further issues.

Results from extended range SRF cavity tuner tests for LCLS-II-HE

The LCLS-II HE superconducting linac can produce multi-energy beams by supporting multiple undulator lines simultaneously. This could be achieved by using the cavity SRF tuner in the off-frequency detune mode. This off-frequency operation method was tested in 8 cryomodules at Fermilab at 2 K. In all the tests the tuners successfully achieved a frequency shift of -565±80 kHz from the 1.3 GHz value. This study discusses the cavity frequency during each stage of assembly from the cryomodule string to when they are finally tested at 2 K. Monitoring the cavity frequency from this initial stage contributed in reaching this large frequency shift. The specific procedures of tuner setting during assembly will be presented.

LCLS-II-HE Status at Fermilab

The LCLS-II-HE project is an upgrade to the Linac Coherent Light Source facility at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. Fermilab is part of the LCLS-II-HE collaboration and will deliver 14 cryomodules to SLAC for LCLS-II-HE. These cryomodules consist of eight 1.3 GHz 9-cell cavities. Cryomodule production is in progress, and four cryomodules have been delivered to SLAC. One of the cryomodules already delivered is the verification cryomodule that reached 200 MV total voltage in continuous wave mode. Status of cryomodule production, and lessons learned will be presented. Fermilab is also designing a buncher cryomodule as part of a low emittance injector design for the project. The design is near completion, and status will be reported.

LCLS-II-HE Cryomodule Testing at Fermilab

22 Linac Coherent Light Source II (LCLS-II) cryomodules were successfully tested at the Cryomodule Test Facility (CMTF) at Fermilab. Following the completion of the LCLS-II testing program, CMTF has shifted to testing cryomodules for the LCLS-II High Energy upgrade (LCLS-II-HE). The first LCLS-II-HE cryomodule, the verification cryomodule (vCM), was successfully tested and verified the readiness of LCLS-II-HE cryomodule testing at CMTF, and production cryomodule testing has begun. Presented here are the production cryomodule test acceptance criteria, testing plan, and cryomodule test results so far.

Extended Range SRF Cavity Tuner for LCLS II HE Project

The off-frequency detune method is being considered to be applied in the LCLS-II-HE superconducting linac to produce multi-energy electron beams for supporting multiple undulator lines simultaneously. To deliver off-frequency operation (OFO) requirements for SRF cavity tuner must be changed. Tuner design modifications and results of the testing eight cavity/tuner system, deployed in verification cryomodule (vCM), will be presented.

LCSL-II Cryomodule Testing at Fermilab

Cold powered testing of all LCLS-II production cryomodules at Fermilab is complete as of February 2021. A total of twenty-five tests on both 1.3 GHz and 3.9 GHz cryomodules were conducted over a nearly five year time span beginning in the summer of 2016. During the course of this campaign cutting-edge results for cavity Q₀ and gradient in continuous wave operation were achieved. A summary of all test results will be presented, with a comparison to established acceptance criteria, as well as overall test stand statistics and lessons learned.

LCLS-II Cryomodules Production Experience and Lessons Learned Towards LCLS-II-HE Project

LCLS-II is an upgrade project for the linear coherent light source (LCLS) at SLAC. The LCLS-II linac consists of thirty-five 1.3 GHz and two 3.9 GHz superconducting RF (SRF) continuous wave (CW) cryomodules with high quality factor cavities. Cryomodules were produced at Fermilab and at Jefferson Lab in collaboration with SLAC. Fermilab successfully completed the assembly, testing and delivery of seventeen 1.3 GHz and three 3.9 GHz cryomodules. LCLS-II-HE is a planned upgrade project to LCLS-II. The LCLS-II-HE linac will consist of twenty-three 1.3 GHz cryomodules with high gradient and high quality factor cavities. This paper presents LCLS-II-HE cryomodule production plans, emphasizing the improvements done based on the challenges, mitigations, and lessons learned from LCLS-II.
