Spectroscopy of A=9 hyperlithium with the $(e,e^{\prime}K^{+})$ reaction

Missing mass spectroscopy with the $(e,e^{\prime}K^{+})$ reaction was performed at JLab Hall C for the neutron rich $\Lambda$ hypernucleus $^{9}_{\Lambda}{\rm Li}$. The ground state energy was obtained to be $B_{\Lambda}^{\rm g.s.}=8.84\pm0.17^{\rm stat.}\pm0.15^{\rm sys.}~{\rm MeV}$ by using shell model calculations of a cross section ratio and an energy separation of the spin doublet states ($3/2^{+}_1$ and $5/2^{+}_1$). In addition, peaks that are considered to be states of [$^{8}{\rm Li}(3^{+})\otimes s_{\Lambda}=3/2^{+}_{2}, 1/2^{+}$] and [$^{8}{\rm Li}(1^{+})\otimes s_{\Lambda}=5/2^{+}_{2}, 7/2^{+}$] were observed at $E_{\Lambda}(\#2)=1.74\pm0.27^{\rm stat.}\pm0.11^{\rm sys.}~{\rm MeV}$ and $E_{\Lambda}(\#3)=3.30\pm0.24^{\rm stat.}\pm0.11^{\rm sys.}~{\rm MeV}$, respectively. The $E_{\Lambda}(\#3)$ is larger than shell model predictions by a few hundred keV, and the difference would indicate that a ${\rm ^{5}He}+t$ structure is more developed for the $3^{+}$ state than those for the $2^{+}$ and $1^{+}$ states in a core nucleus $^{8}{\rm Li}$ as a cluster model calculation suggests.

Proton form factor ratio μ p G E p / G M p from double spin asymmetry

We report the ratio of the electric and magnetic form factor of the proton, $\mu_p G_E^p/G_M^p$, has been measured for elastic electron-proton scattering with polarized beam and target up to four-momentum transfer squared, $Q^2=5.66$ (GeV/c)$^2$ using the double spin asymmetry for target spin orientation aligned nearly perpendicular to the beam momentum direction. This measurement of $\mu_p G_E^p/G_M^p$ agrees with the $Q^2$ dependence of previous recoil polarization data and reconfirms the discrepancy at high $Q^2$ between the Rosenbluth and the polarization-transfer method with a different measurement technique and systematic uncertainties uncorrelated to those of the recoil-polarization measurements. The form factor ratio at $Q^2$=2.06 (GeV/c)$^2$ has been measured as $\mu_p G_E^p/G_M^p = 0.720 \pm 0.176_{stat} \pm 0.039_{sys}$, which is in agreement with an earlier measurement with the polarized target technique at similar kinematics. The form factor ratio at $Q^2$=5.66 (GeV/c)$^2$ has been determined as $\mu_p G_E^p/G_M^p=0.244\pm0.353_{stat}\pm0.013_{sys}$, which represents the highest $Q^2$ reach with the double spin asymmetry with polarized target to date.

The circumstellar dust envelopes of red giant stars. I - M giant stars with the 10-micron silicate emission band

Spherical dust envelope models of red giant stars are constructed by solving the radiative transfer equations of the generalized two-stream Eddington approximation. The IRAS observations of M giant stars which show the 10-micron silicate emission band in IRAS LRS spectra are explained by the models with the dirty silicate grains with K proportional to lambda exp -1.5 for lambda greather than 28 microns. Under the assumption of steady mass flow in the envelope, this model analysis gives the following conclusions: (1) the strength of the silicate emission peak at 10 microns is a good indicator of the mass loss rate of the star, (2) no stars with the 10-microns silicate emission feature are observed in the range of mass loss rate smaller than 7 x 10 to the -8th solar mass/yr, and (3) the characteristic time of the mass loss process of M stars does not exceed a few 10,000 years.

Measurements of n-p correlations in the reaction of relativistic neon with uranium

We report a preliminary measurement of coincident neutron-proton pairs emitted at 45 degrees in the interaction of 400, 530, and 650 MeV/A neon beams incident on uranium. Charged particles were identified by time of flight and momentum, as determined in a magnetic spectrometer. Neutral particles were detected using a thick plastic scintillator, and their time of flight was measured between an entrance scintillator, triggered by a charged particle, and the neutron detector. The scatter plots and contour plots of neutron momentum vs. proton momentum appear to show a slight correlation ridge above an uncorrelated background. The projections of this plane on the n-p momentum difference axis are essentially flat, showing a one standard deviation enhancement for each of the three beams energies. At each beam energy, the calculated momentum correlation function for the neutron-proton pairs is enhanced near zero neutron-proton momentum difference by approximately one standard deviation over the expected value for no correlation. This enhancement is expected to occur as a consequence of the attractive final state interaction between the neutron and proton (i.e., virtual or "singlet" deuterons). The implications of these measurements are discussed.
