Heat treat fixture and method of heat treating

A heat treating fixture is disclosed in which the shape of the metal specimen is maintained by cold rolled steel support plates. Glide sheets of stainless steel, coated with boron nitride, in contact with each face of the metal specimens, allow for lateral expansion of the metal specimens without binding. Grooved support bars separate the glide sheets from the upper and lower support plates and allow flow of quenching fluid to the metal specimen.

Gage for 3-d contours

Simple gage, used with template, can help inspectors determine whether three-dimensional curved surface has correct contour. Gage was developed as aid in explosive forming of Space Shuttle emergency-escape hatch. For even greater accuracy, wedge can be made of metal and calibrated by indexing machine.

Holding fixture for variable-contour parts

Array of vacuum cups on spindles holds parts for safe machining and other processings. Variable-contour part resting on fixture is held firmly enough for machining, coating, or other mechanical treatment.

Adhesive-removal tool

Air-driven hand-held tool with acrylic cutting blade removes adhesives and paint from surfaces. Sidewise-slicing motion of cutter eliminates tendency to "bounce" on resilient materials.

Tile-bonding tool

Device applies uniform, constant, precise pressure to hold tiles in place during bonding. Tool consists of pressure bladders supported by adjustable pole. Pole can accomodate single or multiple bladders. Tiles can be flat or contoured.

Variable contour securing system

A variable contour securing system has a retaining structure for a member whose surface contains a variable contour. The retaining mechanism includes a spaced array of adjustable spindles mounted on a housing. Each spindle has a base member support cup at one end. A vacuum source is applied to the cups for seating the member adjacent to the cups. A locking mechanism sets the spindles in a predetermined position once the member has been secured to the spindle support cups.
