Optical second harmonic generation in anisotropic multilayers with complete multireflection of linear and nonlinear waves using ♯SHAARP.ml package

Abstract Optical second harmonic generation (SHG) is a nonlinear optical effect widely used for nonlinear optical microscopy and laser frequency conversion. Closed-form analytical solution of the nonlinear optical responses is essential for evaluating materials whose optical properties are unknown a priori. A recent open-source code, ♯SHAARP. si , can provide such closed form solutions for crystals with arbitrary symmetries, orientations, and anisotropic properties at a single interface. However, optical components are often in the form of slabs, thin films on substrates, and multilayer heterostructures with multiple reflections of both the fundamental and up to ten different SHG waves at each interface, adding significant complexity. Many approximations have therefore been employed in the existing analytical approaches, such as slowly varying approximation, weak reflection of the nonlinear polarization, transparent medium, high crystallographic symmetry, Kleinman symmetry, easy crystal orientation along a high-symmetry direction, phase matching conditions and negligible interference among nonlinear waves, which may lead to large errors in the reported material properties. To avoid these approximations, we have developed an open-source package named Second Harmonic Analysis of Anisotropic Rotational Polarimetry in Multilayers (♯SHAARP. ml ). The reliability and accuracy are established by experimentally benchmarking with both the SHG polarimetry and Maker fringes using standard and commonly used nonlinear optical materials as well as twisted 2-dimensional heterostructures.

Generalized analytical and numerical modeling of optical second harmonic generation in anisotropic crystals and complex heterostructures using #SHAARP package

Optical second harmonic generation (SHG) is a nonlinear optical effect widely used for nonlinear optical microscopy and laser frequency conversion. The closed-form analytical solution of the nonlinear optical responses is essential for evaluating the optical responses of new materials whose optical properties are unknown a priori. To avoid these approximations, here we have developed an open-source package named Second Harmonic Analysis of Anisotropic Rotational Polarimetry (#SHAARP) for single interface (si) and in multilayers (ml) for homogeneous crystals. The reliability and accuracy are established by experimentally benchmarking with both the SHG polarimetry and Maker fringes predicted from the package using standard materials. SHAARP.si and SHAARP.ml are available through GitHub https://github.com/Rui-Zu/SHAARP and https://github.com/bzw133/SHAARP.ml, respectively.

MgSiP 2 : An Infrared Nonlinear Optical Crystal with a Large Non‐Resonant Phase‐Matchable Second Harmonic Coefficient and High Laser Damage Threshold

Superior infrared nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals are in urgent demand in the development of lasers and optical technologies for communications and computing. The critical challenge is to find a crystal with large non‐resonant phase‐matchable NLO coefficients and high laser damage threshold (LDTs) simultaneously, which however scale inversely. This work reports such a material, MgSiP 2, that exhibits a large second harmonic generation (SHG) coefficient of d 14 ≈ d 36 = 89 ± 5 pm V −1 at 1550 nm fundamental wavelength, surpassing the commercial NLO crystals AgGaS 2 , AgGaSe 2 , and ZnGeP 2 . First principles theory reveals the polarizability and geometric arrangement of the [SiP 4 ] tetrahedral units as the origin of this large nonlinear response. Remarkably, it also exhibits a high LDT value of 684 GW cm −2 , which is six times larger than ZnGeP 2 and three times larger than CdSiP 2 . It has a wide transparency window of 0.53–10.35 µm, allowing broadband tunability. Further, it is Type I and Type II phase‐matchable with large effective SHG coefficients of d eff,I ≈80.2 pm V −1 and d eff,II ≈73.4 pm V −1 . The outstanding properties of MgSiP 2 make it a highly attractive candidate for optical frequency conversion in the infrared.

Large Enhancements in Optical and Piezoelectric Properties in Ferroelectric Zn 1- x Mg x O Thin Films through Engineering Electronic and Ionic Anharmonicities

Multifunctionality as a paradigm requires materials exhibiting multiple superior properties. Integrating second-order optical nonlinearity and large bandgap with piezoelectricity can, for example, enable broadband, strain-tunable photonics. Though very different phenomena at distinct frequencies, both second-order optical nonlinearity and piezoelectricity are third-rank polar tensors present only in acentric crystal structures. However, simultaneously enhancing both phenomena is highly challenging since it involves competing effects with tradeoffs. Recently, a large switchable ferroelectric polarization of ≈80 μC cm –2 was reported in Zn 1-x Mg x O films. Here, ferroelectric Zn 1-x Mg x O is demonstrated to be a platform that hosts simultaneously a 30% increase in the electronic bandgap, a 50% enhancement in the second harmonic generation (SHG) coefficients, and a near 200% improvement in the piezoelectric coefficients over pure ZnO. These enhancements are shown to be due to a 400% increase in the electronic anharmonicity and a ≈200% decrease in the ionic anharmonicity with Mg substitution. Precisely controllable periodic ferroelectric domain gratings are demonstrated down to 800 nm domain width, enabling ultraviolet quasi-phase-matched optical harmonic generation as well as domain-engineered piezoelectric devices.

Layered Semiconductor Cr 0.32 Ga 0.68 Te 2.33 with Concurrent Broken Inversion Symmetry and Ferromagnetism: A Bulk Ferrovalley Material Candidate

The valleytronic state found in group-VI transition-metal dichalcogenides such as MoS2 has attracted immense interest since its valley degree of freedom could be used as an information carrier. However, valleytronic applications require spontaneous valley polarization. Such an electronic state is predicted to be accessible in a new ferroic family of materials, i.e., ferrovalley materials, which features the coexistence of spontaneous spin and valley polarization. Although many atomic monolayer materials with hexagonal lattices have been predicted to be ferrovalley materials, no bulk ferrovalley material candidates have been reported or proposed. Here, in this work, we show that a new non-centrosymmetric van der Waals (vdW) semiconductor Cr 0.32 Ga 0.68 Te 2.33 , with intrinsic ferromagnetism, is a possible candidate for bulk ferrovalley material. This material exhibits several remarkable characteristics: (i) it forms a natural heterostructure between vdW gaps, a quasi-two-dimensional (2D) semiconducting Te layer with a honeycomb lattice stacked on the 2D ferromagnetic slab comprised of the (Cr, Ga)-Te layers, and (ii) the 2D Te honeycomb lattice yields a valley-like electronic structure near the Fermi level, which, in combination with inversion symmetry breaking, ferromagnetism, and strong spin-orbit coupling contributed by heavy Te element, creates a possible bulk spin-valley locked electronic state with valley polarization as suggested by our DFT calculations. Further, this material can also be easily exfoliated to 2D atomically thin layers. Therefore, this material offers a unique platform to explore the physics of valleytronic states with spontaneous spin and valley polarization in both bulk and 2D atomic crystals.

High‐Throughput Screening Assisted Discovery of a Stable Layered Anti‐Ferromagnetic Semiconductor: CdFeP 2 Se 6

Recent advances in 2D magnetism have heightened interest in layered magnetic materials due to their potential for spintronics. In particular, layered semiconducting antiferromagnets exhibit intriguing low-dimensional semiconducting behavior with both charge and spin as carrier controls. However, synthesis of these compounds is challenging and remains rare. Here, first-principles based high-throughput search is conducted to screen potentially stable mixed metal phosphorous trichalcogenides (MM ' P 2 X 6 , where M and M ' are transition metals and X is a chalcogenide) that have a wide range of tunable bandgaps and interesting magnetic properties. Among the potential candidates, a stable semiconducting layered magnetic material, CdFeP 2 Se 6 , that exhibits a short-range antiferromagnetic order at T N = 21 K with an indirect bandgap of 2.23 eV is successfully synthesized . This work suggests that high-throughput screening assisted synthesis can be an effective method for layered magnetic materials discovery.

Stabilization of the Polar Structure and Giant Second-Order Nonlinear Response of Single Crystal γ-NaAs 0.95 Sb 0.05 Se 2

The dearth of suitable materials significantly restricts the practical development of infrared (IR) laser systems with highly efficient and broadband tuning. Recently, γ-NaAsSe 2 is reported, and it exhibits a large nonlinear second-harmonic generation (SHG) coefficient of 590 pm V —1 at 2 µm. However, the crystal growth of γ-NaAsSe 2 is challenging because it undergoes a phase transition to centrosymmetric δ-NaAsSe 2 . Herein, the stabilization of non-centrosymmetric γ-NaAsSe 2 by doping the As site with Sb, which results in γ-NaAs 0.95 Sb 0.05 Se 2 is reported. The congruent melting behavior is confirmed by differential thermal analysis with a melting temperature of 450 °C and crystallization temperature of 415 °C. Single crystals with dimensions of 3 mm × 2 mm are successfully obtained via zone refining and the Bridgman method. The purification of the material plays a significant role in crystal growth and results in a bandgap of 1.78 eV and thermal conductivity of 0.79 Wm —1 K —1 . The single-crystal SHG coefficient of γ-NaAs 0.95 Sb 0.05 Se 2 exhibits an enormous value of |d 11 | = 648 ± 74 pm V —1 , which is comparable to that of γ-NaAsSe 2 and ≈20× larger than that of AgGaSe 2 . Importantly, the bandgap of γ-NaAs 0.95 Sb 0.05 Se 2 (1.78 eV) is similar to that of AgGaSe 2 , thus rendering it highly attractive as a high-performing nonlinear optical material.

Analytical and numerical modeling of optical second harmonic generation in anisotropic crystals using #SHAARP package

Electric-dipole optical second harmonic generation (SHG) is a second-order nonlinear process that is widely used as a sensitive probe to detect broken inversion symmetry and local polar order. Analytical modeling of the SHG polarimetry of a nonlinear optical material is essential to extract its point group symmetry and the absolute nonlinear susceptibilities. Current literature on SHG analysis involves numerous approximations and a wide range of (in)accuracies. We have developed an open-source package called the Second Harmonic Analysis of Anisotropic Rotational Polarimetry (#SHAARP.si) which derives analytical and numerical solutions of reflection SHG polarimetry from a single interface (.si) for bulk homogeneous crystals with arbitrary symmetry group, arbitrary crystal orientation, complex and anisotropic linear dielectric tensor with frequency dispersion, a general SHG tensor and arbitrary light polarization. #SHAARP.si enables accurate modeling of polarimetry measurements in reflection geometry from highly absorbing crystals or wedge-shaped transparent crystals. The package is extendable to multiple interfaces.

Heteroanionic Control of Exemplary Second-Harmonic Generation and Phase Matchability in 1D LiAsS 2– x Se x

The isostructural heteroanionic compounds β-LiAsS 2–x Se x (x = 0, 0.25, 1, 1.75, 2) show a positive correlation between selenium content and second-harmonic response and greatly outperform the industry standard AgGaSe 2 . These materials crystallize in the noncentrosymmetric space group Cc as one-dimensional $\frac{1}{∞}$ [AsQ 2 ] - (Q = S, Se, S/Se) chains consisting of corner-sharing AsQ3 trigonal pyramids with charge-balancing Li + atoms interspersed between the chains. LiAsS 2–x Se x melts congruently for 0 ≤ x ≤ 1.75, but when the Se content exceeds x = 1.75, crystallization is complicated by a phase transition. This behavior is attributed to the β- to α-phase transition present in LiAsSe 2 , which is observed in the Se-rich compositions. The band gap decreases with increasing Se content, starting at 1.63 eV (LiAsS 2 ) and reaching 1.06 eV (β-LiAsSe 2 ). Second-harmonic generation measurements as a function of wavelength on powder samples of β-LiAsS 2–x Se x show that these materials exhibit significantly higher nonlinearity than AgGaSe 2 (d 36 = 33 pm/V), reaching a maximum of 61.2 pm/V for LiAsS 2 . In comparison, single-crystal measurements for LiAsSSe yielded a d eff = 410 pm/V. LiAsSSe, LiAsS 0.25 Se 1.75 , and β-LiAsSe 2 show phase-matching behavior for incident wavelengths exceeding 3 μm. The laser-induced damage thresholds from two-photon absorption processes are on the same order of magnitude as AgGaSe 2 , with S-rich materials slightly outperforming AgGaSe 2 and Se-rich materials slightly underperforming AgGaSe 2 .
