Ion pair extractant selective for LiCl and LiBr

Improved methods for achieving the selective extraction of lithium salts from lithium sources, including rocky ores, salt-lake brines, and end-of-life lithium-ion batteries, could help address projected increases in the demand for lithium. Here, we report an ion pair receptor (2) capable of extracting LiCl and LiBr into an organic receiving phase both from the solid state and from aqueous solutions. Ion pair receptor 2 consists of a calix[4]pyrrole framework, which acts as an anion binding site, linked to a phenanthroline cation binding motif via ether linkages. Receptor 2 binds MgBr 2 and CaCl 2 with high selectivity over the corresponding lithium salts in a nonpolar aprotic solvent. The preference for Mg 2+ and Ca 2+ salts is reversed in polar protic media, allowing receptor 2 to complex LiCl and LiBr with high selectivity and affinity in organic media containing methanol or water. The effectiveness of receptor 2 as an extractant for LiCl and LiBr under liquid–liquid extraction (LLE) conditions was found to be enhanced by the presence of other potentially competitive salts in the aqueous source phase.

Assembly of JAZ–JAZ and JAZ–NINJA complexes in jasmonate signaling

Jasmonates (JAs) are plant hormones with crucial roles in development and stress resilience. They activate MYC transcription factors by mediating the proteolysis of MYC inhibitors called JAZ proteins. In the absence of JA, JAZ proteins bind and inhibit MYC through the assembly of MYC–JAZ–Novel Interactor of JAZ (NINJA)–TPL repressor complexes. However, JAZ and NINJA are predicted to be largely intrinsically unstructured, which has precluded their experimental structure determination. Through a combination of biochemical, mutational, and biophysical analyses and AlphaFold-derived ColabFold modeling, we characterized JAZ–JAZ and JAZ–NINJA interactions and generated models with detailed, high-confidence domain interfaces. We demonstrate that JAZ, NINJA, and MYC interface domains are dynamic in isolation and become stabilized in a stepwise order upon complex assembly. By contrast, most JAZ and NINJA regions outside of the interfaces remain highly dynamic and cannot be modeled in a single conformation. Our data indicate that the small JAZ Zinc finger expressed in Inflorescence Meristem (ZIM) motif mediates JAZ–JAZ and JAZ–NINJA interactions through separate surfaces, and our data further suggest that NINJA modulates JAZ dimerization. This study advances our understanding of JA signaling by providing insights into the dynamics, interactions, and structure of the JAZ–NINJA core of the JA repressor complex.

Enhanced Magnetization in CoFe 2 O 4 Through Hydrogen Doping

Magnetic spinel oxides have attracted extensive research interest due to their rich physics and wide range of applications. However, these materials invariably suffer suppressed magnetization, due to structural imperfections (e.g., disorder, anti-site defects, etc.). Herein, a dramatic enhanced magnetization is obtained with an increasement of 5 µ B /u.c in CoFe 2 O 4 (CFO) through ionic liquid gating induced hydrogen doping. Further, the intercalated hydrogen ions lead to both distinct lattice expansion of ≈0.7% and notable Fe valence state reduction through electron doping, in which ≈17% Fe 3+ is reduced into Fe 2+ . These facts collectively trigger a site-specific spin-flip on tetrahedrally coordinated Co 2+ sites that enhances the net ferrimagnetic moment nearly to its theoretical maximum for perfect CFO.

A simple framework to characterize land aridity based on surface energy partitioning regimes

Land aridity is often characterized by the aridity index (AI), which does not account for land surface water-energy interactions that are crucially important in determining regional climate. Such interactions can be captured by the evaporative fraction (EF, ratio of evapotranspiration to available energy) regimes. As EF is subject to energy and water limitations in humid and dry areas, respectively, EF regimes may be used to characterize land aridity to account for the influence of complex land characteristics and their impact on water availability. Here, we propose a simple framework to characterize land aridity by statistically ranking the coupling strength between EF and surface energy and water terms. The framework is demonstrated using gridded data and compared with AI over the U.S. and China. Results show that regionalization of aridity zones based on EF regimes and a two-tiered classification scheme may provide information such as surface energy and water variability complementary to the background aridity depicted by AI, with implications for extreme events.

Bis–Calix[4]pyrroles: Preparation, structure, complexation properties and beyond

Calix[4]pyrrole and its derivatives are key members of the supramolecular Parthenon along with other well-recognized receptor systems, such as crown ethers, cyclodextrins (CDs), cucurbiturils, calixarenes and pillararenes. Calix[4]pyrroles are relatively easy–to–make and widely recognized for their ability to bind anions and ion pairs. Many review papers relating to aspects of calix[4]pyrrole chemistry have been published within the past decades. These reviews have focused primarily on monomeric calix[4]pyrroles. The emergent area of Bis–calix[4]pyrroles, species wherein two calix[4]pyrrole subunits are linked by one or more “walls”, has not benefited from such treatment, even though the species in question often exhibit enhanced binding affinities and selectivities relative to their single calix[4[pyrrole congeners. This review is designed to summarize recent progress involving bis–calix[4]pyrroles. Advances in the design, synthesis, and coordination chemistry of bis–calix[4]pyrroles containing “one wall”, “two walls”, “three walls”, and “four walls”, as well as their possible application in ion recognition, sensing and logic gate construction, will be detailed. Lastly, the hope is that this review will provide a guide for the design and preparation of new multi-component calix[4]pyrrole receptors possessing improved recognition properties, thereby advancing host–guest chemistry in new and useful directions.

Robust Ferromagnetism in Highly Strained SrCoO 3 Thin Films

Epitaxial strain provides important pathways to control the magnetic and electronic states in transition-metal oxides. However, the large strain is usually accompanied by a strong reduction of the oxygen-vacancy formation energy, which hinders the direct manipulation of their intrinsic properties. Here, using a postdeposition ozone annealing method, we obtain a series of oxygen stoichiometric SrCoO 3 thin films with the tensile strain up to 3.0%. We observe a robust ferromagnetic ground state in all strained thin films, while interestingly the tensile strain triggers a distinct metal-to-insulator transition along with the increase of the tensile strain. The persistent ferromagnetic state across the electrical transition therefore suggests that the magnetic state is directly correlated with the localized electrons, rather than the itinerant ones, which then calls for further investigation of the intrinsic mechanism of this magnetic compound beyond the double-exchange mechanism.
