Bistatic Synthetic-Aperture Radar

Report describes synthetic-aperture radar that uses spaceborne transmitter and ground (or airborne) receiver to obtain imaging data in real time. System has applications in vessel navigation in open seas and polar ice regions, monitoring of wave and ice patterns near shores and oil platforms, and continuous monitoring of region with repeat time of few hours or less.

The absolute amplitude calibration of the SEASAT synthetic aperture radar - An intercomparison with other L-band radar systems

The absolute amplitude calibration of the spaceborne Seasat SAR data set is presented based on previous relative calibration studies. A scale factor making it possible to express the perceived radar brightness of a scene in units of sigma-zero is established. The system components are analyzed for error contribution, and the calibration techniques are introduced for each stage. These include: A/D converter saturation tests; prevention of clipping in the processing step; and converting the digital image into the units of received power. Experimental verification was performed by screening and processing the data of the lava flow surrounding the Pisgah Crater in Southern California, for which previous C-130 airborne scatterometer data were available. The average backscatter difference between the two data sets is estimated to be 2 dB in the brighter, and 4 dB in the dimmer regions. For the SAR a calculated uncertainty of 3 dB is expected.

Doppler parameter estimation techniques for spaceborne SAR with applications to ocean current measurement

The problems of Doppler parameter estimation in the processing of spaceborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data are examined. The phase history of a target can be approximated by a linear FM signal with two parameters: the Doppler centroid and the Doppler frequency rate. Two methods to estimate these parameters automatically from the radar echo are presented. The accuracies of these methods were evaluated using the SEASAT SAR data. It is shown that the method for Doppler centroid determination may be applicable in the measurement of ocean current velocities. The concept behind this technique is presented and the accuracies of the measurements required are examined. Some preliminary results of testing this technique with the SEASAT data are presented.

Amplitude calibrating the Seasat SAR imagery

The Seasat Synthetic Aperture Radar is described with emphasis placed on those aspects of the system that affect the amplitude calibration of the radar. Imagery produced by several Seasat passes over Death Valley, California are examined in an effort to determine the reproducibility of the data and the potential for relative and absolute calibration of the overall SAR image data set.

Simulation and studies of spaceborne synthetic aperture radar image quality with reduced bit rate

A computer simulation program that is used to study the effects of digitization in spaceborne synthetic aperture radar systems is described. An analytical study of the distortion noise introduced by the digitization process at various gain settings, sampling rates and bit error rates is presented and the results agree well with those obtained from the simulation program. The simulation program is also used to study the spatial frequency response of hard-limiting (quantizing to 1-bit) synthetic aperture radar systems. The implications of these results on synthetic aperture radar system design are discussed.

Spaceborne bistatic synthetic aperture imaging radar

The properties of two configurations for a spaceborne bistatic SAR are examined and compared with the properties of a monostatic SAR. The two bistatic configurations considered are a system consisting of an orbiting spaceborne transmitter and a ground receiver and a system consisting of a transmitter on a geostationary satellite and a receiver or receivers on an airborne platform. The properties discussed or analyzed include imaging coordinate system, azimuth and range resolution, azimuth and range ambiguities, and swath width.

A position-sensitive X-ray detector for the HEAO-A satellite.

A position-sensitive, low-energy proportional counter system is described which will be used on the High-Energy Astronomical Observatory, Mission A, spacecraft. The associated system incorporates the capability to employ pulse-shape discrimination for background rejection and interpolation circuitry to locate the centroid of an X-ray event with an accuracy of approximately one eighth the cathode-wire spacing.
