LANDSAT follow-on: A report by the applications survey groups. Volume 1: Executive summary

Attempts at operational usage of the LANDSAT imagery by non NASA users are studied with particular emphasis on profitable use of the imagery, as contrasted with investigations concerned with research and development of a technology. An evaluation is given of the functional capabilities of the LANDSAT follow-on and ground systems designs in terms of user requirements and desiderata for data measurements, products, and parameters. Applications survey groups (ASGs) were formed for mineral and petroleum exploration, inland water resources, land inventory, and agriculture. The members were drawn from all segments of the user community: Federal agencies, state and local governments or agencies (or from associations of such constituencies), industry and universities. They were selected so that in aggregate they would be able to adequately assess the state-of-the-art in their technical areas and represent this in the ASG deliberations.

Encounter strategies available for the first mission to Saturn

The Pioneer 11 spacecraft completed a highly successful flyby of the planet Jupiter on Dec. 3, 1974. The flyby was chosen such that the post-Jupiter flight path would encounter Saturn. Only trajectory trim adjustments remain to be made to achieve the desired Saturn flyby aim point. The present course of Pioneer 11 will come within 1.7 million kilometers of Saturn and maneuver capabilities allow many flyby strategies to be considered. These strategies consider planet and ring viewing, occultation characteristics, satellite encounters, and flight path hazards. The post-Saturn fligh path possibilities, disregarding spacecraft limitations, also include encounters of Jupiter, Uranus, Neptune, and 33 different comets. This paper presents these opportunities in light of the spacecraft and tracking limitations for encounter strategy selection.

Science sequence design

The activities of the following members of the Navigation Team are recorded: the Science Sequence Design Group, responsible for preparing the final science sequence designs; the Advanced Sequence Planning Group, responsible for sequence planning; and the Science Recommendation Team (SRT) representatives, responsible for conducting the necessary sequence design interfaces with the teams during the mission. The interface task included science support in both advance planning and daily operations. Science sequences designed during the mission are also discussed.

Mariner Mars 1971 television picture catalog. Volume 2: Sequence design and picture coverage

A collection of data relating to the Mariner 9 TV picture is presented. The data are arranged to offer speedy identification of what took place during entire science cycles, on individual revolutions, and during individual science links or sequences. Summary tables present the nominal design for each of the major picture-taking cycles, along with the sequences actually taken on each revolution. These tables permit identification at a glance, all TV sequences and the corresponding individual pictures for the first 262 revolutions (primary mission). A list of TV pictures, categorized according to their latitude and longitude, is also provided. Orthographic and/or mercator plots for all pictures, along with pertinent numerical data for their center points are presented. Other tables and plots of interest are also included. This document is based upon data contained in the Supplementary Experiment Data Record (SEDR) files as of 21 August 1972.
