Difference-frequency-based tunable absorption spectrometer for detection of atmospheric formaldehyde

High-sensitivity detection of formaldehyde (CH2O) at 3.5315 micrometers (2831.64 cm-1) is reported with a diode-laser-pumped, fiber-coupled, periodically poled LiNbO3 spectroscopic source. This source replaced the Pb-salt diode laser Dewar assembly of an existing tunable diode-laser absorption spectrometer designed for ultrasensitive detection of CH2O. Spectra are recorded with 2f-modulation spectroscopy and zero-air rapid background subtraction. Initial measurements reported here, determined from multiple measurements of a flowing 7.7 parts per billion by volume (ppbv, parts in 10(9)) CH2O in air mixture, indicate replicate precisions as low as 0.24 ppbv.

Thermal expansion in the nickel-chromium-aluminum and cobalt-chromium-aluminum systems to 1200 degrees C

Thermal expansion data were obtained on 12 Ni-Cr-Al and 9 Co-Cr-Al alloys by high temperature X-ray diffraction. The data were computer fit to an empirical thermal expansion equation developed in the study. It is shown that the fit is excellent to good, and that the expansion constants depend on phase but not on composition. Phases for the Ni-Cr-Al system and Co-Cr-Al system are given. Results indicate that only alpha Cr has an expansion constant low enough to minimize oxide spalling or coating cracking induced by thermal expansion mismatch.

Simple scale interpolator facilitates reading of graphs

Set of cards with scale divisions and a scale finder permits accurate reading of the coordinates of points on linear or logarithmic graphs plotted on rectangular grids. The set contains 34 different scales for linear plotting and 28 single cycle scales for log plots.
