Characterization of electroless nickel-phosphorus plating for ultracold-neutron storage

Electroless nickel plating is an established industrial process that provides a robust and relatively low-cost coating suitable for transporting and storing ultracold neutrons (UCN). Using roughness measurements and UCN-storage experiments we characterized UCN guides made from polished aluminum or stainless-steel tubes plated by several vendors. All electroless nickel platings were similarly suited for UCN storage with an average loss probability per wall bounce of 2.8 • 10 -4 to 4.1 • 10 -4 for energies between 90 neV and 190 neV, or a ratio of imaginary to real Fermi potential η of 1.7 • 10 -4 to 3.3 • 10 -4 . Measurements at different elevations indicate that the energy dependence of UCN losses is well described by the imaginary Fermi potential. Some special considerations are required to avoid an increase in surface roughness during the plating process and hence a reduction in UCN transmission. Increased roughness had only a minor impact on storage properties. In conclusion, based on these findings we chose a vendor to plate the UCN-production vessel that will contain the superfluid-helium converter for the new TRIUMF UltraCold Advanced Neutron (TUCAN) source, achieving acceptable UCN-storage properties with η = 3.5(5)•10 -4 .

B-flavor tagging at Belle II

We report on new flavor tagging algorithms developed to determine the quark-flavor content of bottom (B) mesons at Belle II. The algorithms provide essential inputs for measurements of quark-flavor mixing and charge-parity violation. We validate and evaluate the performance of the algorithms using hadronic B decays with flavor-specific final states reconstructed in a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 62.8fb -1 , collected at the Υ(4S) resonance with the Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB collider. We measure the total effective tagging efficiency to be ε eff = (30.0 ± 1.2(stat) ± 0.4(syst))% for a category-based algorithm and ε eff = (28.8 ± 1.2(stat) ± 0.4(syst))% for a deep learning-based algorithm.

Test of lepton flavor universality and search for lepton flavor violation in B → Kℓℓ decays

We present measurements of the branching fractions for the decays B → Kμ + μ - and B → Ke + e - , and their ratio (R K ), using a data sample of 711 fb -1 that contains 772 × 10 6 B$\bar{B}$ events. The data were collected at the Υ(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e + e - collider. The ratio R K is measured in five bins of dilepton invariant-mass-squared (q 2 ): q 2 $\epsilon$ (0.1, 4.0), (4.00, 8.12), (1.0, 6.0), (10.2, 12.8) and (> 14.18) GeV 2 /c 4 , along with the whole q 2 region. The R K value for q 2 $\epsilon$ (1.0, 6.0) GeV 2 /c 4 is 1.03$^{+0.28}_{-0.24}$ ± 0.01. The first and second uncertainties listed are statistical and systematic, respectively. All results for RK are consistent with Standard Model predictions. We also measure CP-averaged isospin asymmetries in the same q 2 bins. The results are consistent with a null asymmetry, with the largest difference of 2.6 standard deviations occurring for the q 2 $\epsilon$ (1.0, 6.0) GeV 2 /c 4 bin in the mode with muon final states. The measured differential branching fractions, dB/dq 2 , are consistent with theoretical predictions for charged B decays, while the corresponding values are below the expectations for neutral B decays. We have also searched for lepton-flavor-violating B → Kμ ± e ∓ decays and set 90% confidence-level upper limits on the branching fraction in the range of 10 -8 for B + → K + μ ± e ∓ , and B 0 → K 0 μ ± e ∓ modes.

AMPTE/CCE and SCATHA simultaneous observations of magnetic signatures associated with a substorm onset

Magnetic field signatures associated with a substorm onset event are examined by making use of simultaneous observations from the Active Magnetosphere Particle Tracer Explorer (AMPTE)/Charge Composition Explorer (CCE) and Spacecraft Charging AT High Altitude (SCATHA). The observations of the two satellites are discussed in relation to their differences and the relative positions of the satellites. Despite the small separation between the satellites, AMPTE/CCE observed the start of irregular magnetic field fluctuations a few tens of seconds earlier than SCATHA, indicating that the CCE was within, or closer to, the onset region. It was found that the amplitude of the fluctuations was largest in the north-south component. The results indicate that the magnetic field fluctuations were excited locally and the coherence length was less than a multiple of Larmor radius of thermal protons. It is suggested that the tail current disruption is described as a system of chaotic filamentary electric currents which flow in various directions, but preferentially anti-parallel to the cross-tail current, and that ions play an important role in the triggering of the tail current disruption.

New Matsushiro underground cosmic ray station (220 M.W.E. in depth)

A new underground cosmic ray station has been opened at Matsushiro, Japan, and a multidirectional (17 directional channels) muon telescope has been installed at an effective vertical depth of 220 m.w.e. The counting rates are; 8.7 x 10,000/hr for the wide vertical component and 2.0 x 10,000/hr for the vertical component. Continuous observation has been performed since March 22,1984. Some details of the telescope and preliminary analyzed results of the data are presented.
