Hot Spot Evolution Measured by High-Resolution X-Ray Spectroscopy at the National Ignition Facility

Evolution of the hot spot plasma conditions was measured using high-resolution x-ray spectroscopy at the National Ignition Facility. The capsules were filled with DD gas with trace levels of Kr and had either a high-density-carbon (HDC) ablator or a tungsten (W)-doped HDC ablator. Time-resolved measurement of the Kr He β spectra, absolutely calibrated by a simultaneous time-integrated measurement, allows inference of the electron density and temperature through observing Stark broadening and the relative intensities of dielectronic satellites. By matching the calculated hot spot emission using a collisional-radiative code to experimental observations, the hot spot size and areal density are determined. Here these advanced spectroscopy techniques further reveal the effect of W dopant in the ablator on the hot spot parameters for their improved implosion performance.

Design and engineering challenges of a multi-energy hard x-ray camera for long-pulse profile measurements at WEST tokamak

The WEST tokamak has recently been prepared for long pulse operation with a water-cooled full first wall. Heating is provided by radiofrequency systems, including Lower Hybrid Current Drive (LHCD). The Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory has developed a multi-energy hard x-ray camera for profile measurements at WEST. The camera is based on a new generation of 2D pixel array detectors that allow the energy threshold to be independently set for each pixel. The diagnostic will provide spatial, temporal and energy resolved measurements of the hard x-ray emission from the full plasma cross-section, investigating several physical quantities such as the electron temperature from continuum emission, the fast electron tail density produced by radiofrequency current drive and runaway electrons, as well as characteristic tungsten x-rays due to beam-target emission at the edge. Overall, this work describes the engineering challenges that the WEST long pulse scenario poses for this diagnostic and how the design addresses and solves them. Vacuum, thermal stress and heat transfer calculations are presented and discussed.

Multi-cone x-ray imaging Bragg crystal spectrometer

Embodiments provide a multi-cone X-ray imaging Bragg crystal spectrometer for spectroscopy of small x-ray sources with a well-defined spectral resolution. The spectrometer includes a glass substrate machined to a multi-cone form; and a thin crystal slab attached to the glass substrate, whereby the multi-cone X-ray imaging Bragg crystal spectrometer provides rotational symmetry of a ray pattern, providing for accurate imaging, for each wavelength in the spectral range of interest. One or more embodiments include a streak camera and/or a gated strip detector.
