Alkyl-Substituted Polycaprolactone Poly(urethane-urea)s as Mechanically Competitive and Chemically Recyclable Materials

We report the mechanical performance and chemical recycling advantages of implementing alkyl-substituted poly(ε-caprolactones) (PCLs) as soft segments in thermoplastic poly(urethane-urea) (TPUU) materials. Poly(4-methylcaprolactone) (P4MCL) and poly(4-propylcaprolactone) (P4PrCL) were prepared, reacted with isophorone diisocyanate, and chain-extended with water to form TPUUs. The resulting materials’ tensile properties were similar or superior to a commercially available polyester thermoplastic poly(urethane) and had superior elastic recovery properties compared to a PCL analogue due to the noncrystalline nature of P4MCL and P4PrCL. Additionally, monomers were recovered from the TPUU materials in high yields via ring-closing depolymerization using a reactive distillation approach at an elevated temperature and a reduced pressure (240–260 °C, 25–140 mTorr) with zinc chloride (ZnCl 2 ) as the catalyst. The thermodynamics of polymerization were estimated using Van’t Hoff analyses for 4MCL and 4PrCL; these results indicated that the propyl group in 4PrCL results in a lower practical ceiling temperature (T c ) for P4PrCL.

Molecular homing and retention of muscle membrane stabilizing copolymers by non-invasive optical imaging in vivo

First-in-class membrane stabilizer Poloxamer 188 (P188) has been shown to confer membrane protection in an extensive range of clinical conditions; however, elements of the systemic distribution and localization of P188 at the organ, tissue, and muscle fiber levels in vivo have not yet been elucidated. Here we used non-invasive fluorescence imaging to directly visualize and track the distribution and localization of P188 in vivo. The results demonstrated that the Alx647 probe did not alter the fundamental properties of P188 to protect biological membranes. Distribution kinetics in mdx mice demonstrated that Alx647 did not interface with muscle membranes and had fast clearance kinetics. In contrast, the distribution kinetics for P188-Alx647 was significantly slower, indicating a dramatic depot and retention effect of P188. Results further demonstrated the significant retention of P188-Alx647 in the skeletal muscle of mdx mice, showing a significant genotype effect with a higher fluorescence signal in the mdx muscles over BL10 mice. High-resolution optical imaging provided direct evidence of P188 surrounding the sarcolemma of skeletal and cardiac muscle cells. Taken together, these findings provide direct evidence of muscle-disease-dependent molecular homing and retention of synthetic copolymers in striated muscles thereby facilitating advanced studies of copolymer-membrane association in health and disease.

Polymeric Microcapsules as Robust Mimics of Emulsion Liquid Membranes for Selective Ion Separations

Selective ion separations are increasingly needed to combat water scarcity, recover resources from wastewater, and enable the efficient recycling of electronics waste. Emulsion liquid membranes (ELMs) have received interest due to rapid kinetics, high selectivities, and low solvent requirements but are too unstable for industrial usage. Here, we demonstrate that polymeric microcapsules can serve as robust, solvent-free mimics of ELMs. As a proof of concept, we incorporated the copper-selective ligand Lix 84-I in the walls of microcapsules formed from a commercial polystyrene-b-polybutadiene-b-polystyrene triblock polymer. The microcapsules were formed from a double-emulsion template, resulting in particles typically 20–120 μm in diameter that encapsulated even smaller droplets of a dilute (≤0.5 M) H 2 SO 4 solution. Batch experiments demonstrated facilitated-transport behavior, with equilibrium reached in as little as 10 min for microcapsules with 1% ligand, and with ~15-fold selectivity for Cu 2+ over Ni 2+ . Furthermore, the microcapsules could be packed readily in columns for flow-through operation, thus enabling near-complete Cu 2+ removal in ~2 min under certain conditions, recovery of Cu 2+ by flowing through fresh dilute H 2 SO 4 , and reuse for at least 10 cycles. The approach in this work can serve as a template for using selective ligands to enable robust and simple flow-through processes for a variety of selective ion separations.

Tailored Mesoporous Microspheres by Polymerization-Induced Microphase Separation in Suspension

We describe the preparation of block polymer beads by aqueous suspension polymerization to create poly(caprolactone) (PCL)-block-poly(styrene-co-divinylbenzene) beads that can be selectively etched under basic conditions to yield mesoporous polymer microspheres with uniform pore size. Polyvinylalcohol was used to stabilize the suspension polymerization in which styrene and divinylbenzene monomers were polymerized from a PCL macrochain transfer agent (macroCTA). The resulting polymerization-induced microphase separation process led to a nanostructured bicontinuous morphology. The particle size and pore size were independently tunable: the particle size was controlled by the stir rate of the suspension polymerization-yielding average diameters ranging from 60 to 300 μm-while the pore size was determined by the molar mass of the PCL block, with the mode pore diameters being 6 nm and 11 nm after etching beads made using 13 and 45 kg/mol PCL blocks, respectively. Based on nitrogen sorption measurements, the surface areas of the beads were ~300 m 2 /g when using a PCL macroCTA of 13 kg/mol. The beads were homogenous throughout on the micron length scale as determined by confocal Raman microscopy and lacked an impermeable skin layer as confirmed by scanning electron microscopy. Furthermore, the scalability of suspension polymerization allows for the simple synthesis of large quantities of thermoset microspheres with uniform pore size. We also demonstrate the ability to incorporate functional pore walls into the beads using multiblock precursor polymers. These functionalized mesoporous polymer beads show high affinity for ionic dyes in aqueous solutions (as a proof of principle) and remove dye from the solution at rates exceeding those of commercial ion-exchange resins. The developed procedure could be used to generate other functional surface chemistries with important applications in heterogeneous catalysis, chromatography, and water remediation.
