Suppressed Carrier Synchronizers for ISI Channels

We demonstrate a class of suppressed carrier synchronization loops that are motivated by MAP estimation theory and in the presence of ISI outperform the conventional I-Q loop which is designed on the basis of zero ISI (wideband assumption). The measure of comparison used is the so-called.

Improved Closed-Loop Carrier-Phase Synchronization In BPSK

Scheme motivated by maximum-likelihood approach offers advantages over other well-known schemes. Proposed signal-processing system generates error signal proportional to derivative of conditional probability density function with respect to estimated carrier phase. Signal serves as feedback signal in carrier-phase-tracking loop.

Buffered Telemetry Demodulator

Buffered telemetry demodulator (BTD) is radio receiver designed mainly for recovery of low-rate data binery phase-modulated onto square-wave subcarrier on sinusoidal or suppressed sinusoidal carrier signal and received at low symbol-to-noise ratio. In BTD, received signal not only processed in real time but also recorded and subsequently reprocessed to recover data otherwise lost. BTD could be implemented on general-purpose computer workstation.

Symbol lock detection implemented with nonoverlapping integration intervals

A symbol lock detector is introduced for an incoming coherent digital communication signal which utilizes a subcarrier modulated with binary symbol data, d(sub k), and known symbol interval T by integrating binary values of the signal over nonoverlapping first and second intervals selected to be T/2, delaying the first integral an interval T/2, and either summing or multiplying the second integral with the first one that preceded it to form a value X(sub k). That value is then averaged over a number M of symbol intervals to produce a static value Y. A symbol lock decision can then be made when the static value Y exceeds a threshold level delta.

Effect Of Transition Density On Performance Of A DTTL

One estimates minimum transition density needed to limit symbol-error rate. Theoretical calculations and accompanying computer simulations provide numerical basis for specification of minimum data-transition density needed for adequate performance of radio receiver processing noisy signal containing non-return-to-zero (NRZ) stream of data symbols (bits). By use of digital-data-transition-tracking loop (DTTL), receiver strives to synchronize operation with data symbols. Performance of receiver in terms of ability to keep symbol-error rate (SER) in output of receiver below specified level depends on symbol signal-to-noise ratio (SSNR) of incoming signal and on degree of synchronization. Ability of DTTL to maintain synchronization depends partly on SSNR and partly on data-transition density.

Parallel Digital Phase-Locked Loops

Wide-band microwave receivers of proposed type include digital phase-locked loops in which band-pass filtering and down-conversion of input signals implemented by banks of multirate digital filters operating in parallel. Called "parallel digital phase-locked loops" to distinguish them from other digital phase-locked loops. Systems conceived as cost-effective solution to problem of filtering signals at high sampling rates needed to accommodate wide input frequency bands. Each of M filters process 1/M of spectrum of signal.

Compensating For Unbalance In Pulse-Code Phase Modulation

Algorithm proposed for use in pulse-code phase-modulation transmitter in which non-return-to-zero (NRZ) or biphase data modulated directly onto radio-frequency residual carrier signal. Devised to compensate somewhat for effect, upon distant receiver, of unbalance in stream of transmitted data. Formulated to compute combinations of modulation index, data rate, and transmitter power compensating for measured unbalance in transmitted data stream.

A Comparison of Telemetry Signals in the Presence and Absence of a Subcarrier

The performance of deep-space telemetry signals that employ a residual carrier modulation technique is compared in the presence and absence of a subcarrier. When the subcarrier is present, the performance for the resulting pulse-coded modulation/phase-shift keyed/phase-modulated (PCM/PSK/PM) scheme is evaluated for both sine-wave and square-wave subcarriers and Non-Return-to Zero (NRZ) data. When the subcarrier is absent, the performance for the resulting PCM/PM technique is evaluated for both the NRZ and the bi-phase data format. The comparison is based on telemetry performance as well as bandwidth efficiency. The first criterion is characterized in terms of the Symbol Error Rate (SER) as a function of symbol SNR, loop bandwidth-to-data rate ratio, and modulation index. The bandwidth efficiency is characterized by the occupancy factor. The results of both the analysis and measurements show that when the Interference-to-Carrier Ratio (ICR) is less than -20 dB, the performance degradation in the absence of a subcarrier is negligible. Various combinations of loop bandwidth-to-data rate ratios and modulation indices that achieve this performance are derived and listed. Bandwidth occupancy comparison indicates that PCM/PM/NRZ is the most efficient in this regard. Therefore, by eliminating the subcarrier and using the PCM/PM/NRZ scheme, many advantages can be realized without any sacrifice in performance.

Comparison Of Four FFT-Based Frequency-Acquisition Techniques

Report presents comparative theoretical analysis of four conceptual techniques for initial estimation of carrier frequency of suppressed-carrier, binary-phase-shift-keyed radio signal. Each technique effected by open-loop analog/digital signal-processing subsystem part of Costas-loop phase-error detector functioning in closed-loop manner overall.

Three Alternative Symbol-Lock Detectors

Three symbol-lock detectors proposed as alternatives in advanced receivers processing non-return-to-zero binary data signals. Two perform operations similar to those of older square-law and absolute-value types. However, integrals computed during nonoverlapping symbol periods and, therefore, only one integrator needed in each such detector. Proposed detectors simpler, but performances worse because noises in overlapping samples correlated, whereas noises in nonoverlapping samples not correlated. Third detector is signal-power-estimator type. Signal integrated during successive half symbol cycles, and therefore only one integrator needed. Half-cycle integrals multiplied to eliminate effect of symbol polarity, and products accumulated during M-cycle observation period to smooth out estimate of signal power. If estimated signal power exceeds threshold, delta, then lock declared.

Performance Of The Split-Symbol Moments Estimator

Report presents analysis of performance of Split-Symbol Moments Estimator (SSME) algorithm. Designed to estimate symbol signal-to-noise ratio of radio signal modulated by binary data pulses of period T and received in presence of additive white Gaussian noise. Incoming signal and noise first filtered, then sampled Ns - T/Ts times per symbol period. This study focuses on performance of SSME in case in which frequency width limited by digital filter and inter-symbol interference is thereby generated.

Telemetry Tests Of The Advanced Receiver II

Report describes telemetry tests of Advanced Receiver II (ARX-II): digital radio receiving subsystem operating on intermediate-frequency output of another receiving subsystem called "multimission receiver" (MMR), detecting carrier, subcarrier, and data-symbol signals transmitted by spacecraft, and extracts Doppler information from signals. Analysis of data shows performance of MMR/ARX-II system comparable and sometimes superior to performances of Blk-III/BPA and Blk-III/SDA/SSA systems.

Arraying Techniques In The Deep Space Network

Report discusses performances of number of techniques for combining radio signals received at several antennas to increase signal-to-noise ratio of specified weak signal bearing digital data via phase modulation. Techniques studied: symbol-stream combining, baseband combining, carrier arraying, and full-spectrum combining. Basic idea to synthesize effect of larger antenna or, equivalently, array of antennas. Called "arraying", techniques used in Space Network to extend range of reception of signals from spacecraft traveling beyond distant planets.

Open-Loop Acquisition Of Suppressed Carrier Signals

Three digital techniques for open-loop acquisition of suppressed carrier signals in presence of binary-phase-shift-keyed (BPSK) modulation representing non-return-to-zero (NRZ) data symbols. Based on assumption that offset, tau, between timing of symbols and clock in receiver unknown, but fixed fraction of symbol period, T. In all three, fast Fourier transforms (FFT's) performed on outputs of integrate-and-dump filters that are parts of Costas-type loops used to demodulate BPSK signals. Timing of integrate-and-dump filters constant. Outputs mixed to obtain an error signal.

Acquisition Performances Of QPSK Carrier-Tracking Loops

Report presents comparative study of acquisition performances of several types of carrier-signal-tracking loops for reception of quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) signals. Loops classified into three types: maximum a-posteriori, (MAP) estimation loop, Costas cross-over loop, and generalized Costas loop. Mathematical models developed. In-phase and quadrature signals generated numerically and processed according to loop algorithms. Results show though MAP loop produces smallest squaring loss at all signal-to-noise ratios, others sometimes exhibit shorter acquisition time and greater probability of acquisition.

Performance Of Digital Data-Transition-Tracking Loop

Report presents theoretical study of performance of all-digital data-transition-tracking loop (DTTL). Equations derived to analyze effects of few samples per symbol period and of noncommensurate sampling and symbol rates. Noise and frequency response taken into account. Effects upon variance of phase error and on mean time to lose lock quantified through computer simulations. Because of phase ambiguity, digital DTTL performs poorly when number of samples per symbol period is small.
