Hawaiian Electric Company (HECO) Grid Optimization with Solar (Cooperative Research and Development Final Report)

The purpose of this project is to provide a software platform that gives utility companies the capability to seamlessly dispatch legacy devices (at both the distribution and subtransmission levels) and distributed energy resources (DERs) to achieve system-wide performance and reliability targets–such as minimizing loss, reducing voltage violation, and corresponding imbalance–for extreme solar futures with well over 100% (capacity) penetrations.

Distribution Capacity Expansion Planning: Current Practice, Opportunities, and Decision Support

The distribution utility industry and its engineers are experiencing monumental shifts in consumer needs and expectations. Characterizing future native loads as compared to net load demand for long-term capacity planning is especially difficult, as consumers are increasingly adopting prosumer technologies. This paper is the culmination of 5 months of utility interviews coordinated by the National Renewable Energy Lab (NREL) and Kevala, Inc. (Kevala) to better understand distribution capacity planning challenges. The interviews covered all aspects of capacity planning including load and DER forecasting, criteria for assessing system constraints, solution types, and organizational and decision-making structures. Our intent is to provide insight into distribution capacity planning decision support needs for utilities and the increasing number of stakeholders involved, from state and regulatory agencies to community and solution providers with interest in increasing their understanding in the distribution capacity planning process.

Real-World Distribution System Modeling Framework for Transmission-and-Distribution Cosimulation: Preprint

This paper presents a modeling methodology for realistic distribution system simulation and analysis. The methodology involves three major approaches: utility model conversion, feeder load modeling, and feeder model validation. The feeder models obtained from the utility are converted to the format that is more flexible for analysis and algorithm development. The load profiles down to each node are modeled in detail using advanced metering infrastructure data and supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system measured load data. Then the distribution system models are validated by comparing the simulated feeder-head voltage results and SCADA measured voltage data. To better understand the bulk system operations and the interactions between transmission and distribution systems, the modeled realistic distribution systems are integrated into a transmission-and-distribution cosimulation framework to perform the system simulation from the bulk system down to each node in the distribution system.
