Advanced secondary power system for transport aircraft

A concept for an advanced aircraft power system was identified that uses 20-kHz, 440-V, sin-wave power distribution. This system was integrated with an electrically powered flight control system and with other aircraft systems requiring secondary power. The resulting all-electric secondary power configuration reduced the empty weight of a modern 200-passenger, twin-engine transport by 10 percent and the mission fuel by 9 percent.

Application of digital controls on the quiet clean short haul experimental engines

The digital control systems for the Under-the-Wing (UTW) and Over-the-Wing (OTW) engines developed on the NASA/General Electric Quiet Clean Shorthaul Experimental Engine (QCSEE) program are described. The system to control engine variables includes three major functional parts: system sensors, digital control and system actuators. One of the primary control system functions is to prevent the engine from exceeding speed or temperature limits. The UTW control system also provides fault detection and condition monitoring. The control system requirements for the OTW engine are essentially the same as the UTW engine, however the inlet Mach number control requirement is eliminated, and failure indication and corrective action and full authority digital control are added. The digital controls scheduled the engine variables and maintained engine operation within all physical limits throughout the test program of approximately 200 hours of operation and provided stable and accurate control of both engines.

Self-protecting solid state isolated switch

Solid state switch has following capabilities: (1) Hybrid or IC from compatible with direct mounting on solar array substrate; (2) Continuous signal is not required to hold it in either on or off state; (3) Separate signal lines for on and off control; (4) Electrically isolated from input signals; and (5) Current surges will not cause switch failure.

High voltage solar cell power generating system

A laboratory solar power system regulated by on-panel switches has been delivered for operating high power (3 kW), high voltage (15,000 volt) loads (communication tubes, ion thrusters). The modular system consists of 26 solar arrays, each with an integral light source and cooling system. A typical array contains 2,560 series-connected cells. Each light source consists of twenty 500-watt tungsten iodide lamps providing plus or minus 5 percent uniformity at one solar constant. An array temperature of less than 40 C is achieved using an infrared filter, a water-cooled plate, a vacuum hold-down system, and air flushing.

Cobalt-tungsten, ferromagnetic high-temperature alloy

Cobalt-base alloy which combines high temperature strength and magnetic properties has a composition in weight percent of 7-1/2 tungsten, 2-1/2 iron, 1 titanium, 1/2 zirconium, 1/2 carbon, and the balance cobalt. It may be used as construction material for electric motors and generators operating at high temperatures.
