Array Of Sensors Measures Broadband Radiation

Multiple broadband radiation sensors aimed at various portions of total field of view. All sensors mounted in supporting frame, serving as common heat sink and temperature reference. Each sensor includes heater winding and differential-temperature-sensing bridge circuit. Power in heater winding adjusted repeatedly in effort to balance bridge circuit. Intended to be used aboard satellite in orbit around Earth to measure total radiation emitted, at various viewing angles, by mosaic of "footprint" areas (each defined by its viewing angle) on surface of Earth. Modified versions of array useful for angle-resolved measurements of broadband radiation in laboratory and field settings on Earth.

Nonscanning climate sensor study

The Nonscanning Climate Sensor represents a new instrument for climate research and global monitoring of the earth radiation budget. It contains a mosaic of array of detectors which measures the outgoing radiation of the earth in all directions without the need for mechanical scanning. The goal is to eliminate all moving parts and obtain highly calibrated measurements for up to one solar cycle (11 years) without being susceptible to mechanical failure. Over set intervals of time, the angular measurements are integrated up to produce total reflected and emitted flux values from each target area on the Earth. To achieve the require sensitivity while maintaining a flat spectral response, an improved dual cavity detector with digital control loop was developed. The detector is self calibrating to maintain high precision over the life of the instrument. Prototype detectors and a complete set of electronics with a microprocessor controller were fabricated and tested. Measurements show that the new detectors are more than an order of magnitude more sensitive than previous versions.

Earth Radiation Array (ERA)

The NASA's Earth Radiation Array (ERA), which is currently being developed to provide calibrated radiation measurements from various areas of the earth for at least 11 years, i.e., one solar cycle, contains a mosaic array of detectors which measures the outgoing radiation of the earth in all directions without the need for mechanical scanning. The angular measurements obtained by the ERA over set intervals of time will be integrated to produce total reflected and emitted flux values from each of the target areas. The ERA is designed as a relatively small instrument (less than 1-cu-m volume and 100-kg mass), which can be included in the payload complement of many different satellites. The key requirement of the ERA is the ability to operate for up to 11 years continuously and without failure.
