Harnessing structural stochasticity in the computational discovery and design of microstructures

This paper presents a deep generative model-based design methodology for tailoring the structural stochasticity of microstructures. Although numerous methods have been established for designing deterministic (periodic) or stochastic microstructures, a systematic design approach that allows the unified treatment of both deterministic and stochastic microstructure design domains has yet to be created. The proposed methodology resolves this issue by learning a unified feature space that embodies diverse structural patterns with continuously varying stochasticity levels. A highly diverse microstructure database is established to incorporate various types of deterministic and stochastic microstructure patterns. A property-aware deep generative model is proposed to learn a unified feature space of the structural characteristics, as well as the relationship between structure features and properties of interest. Autoencoder (AE), Variational Autoencoder (VAE), and Adversarial Autoencoder (AAE) are compared to understand their relative merits in the property-aware learning of the unified feature space. Microstructural designs with tailorable stochasticity and properties are obtained by searching the unified feature space. Multiple design cases are presented to demonstrate the capability of designing microstructures for structural stochasticity and properties. Furthermore, the proposed method is employed to create stochastically graded structures, which manipulate the mechanical behaviors by varying the local stochasticity of the structure.

Guiding the Design of Heterogeneous Electrode Microstructures for Li-Ion Batteries: Microscopic Imaging, Predictive Modeling, and Machine Learning

Electrochemical and mechanical properties of lithium-ion battery materials are heavily dependent on their 3D microstructure characteristics. A quantitative understanding of the role played by stochastic microstructures is critical for the prediction of material properties and for guiding synthesis processes. Furthermore, tailoring microstructure morphology is also a viable way of achieving optimal electrochemical and mechanical performances of lithium-ion cells. To facilitate the establishment of microstructure-resolved modeling and design methods, a review covering spatially and temporally resolved imaging of microstructure and electrochemical phenomena, microstructure statistical characterization and stochastic reconstruction, microstructure-resolved modeling for property prediction, and machine learning for microstructure design is presented here. The perspectives on the unresolved challenges and opportunities in applying experimental data, modeling, and machine learning to improve the understanding of materials and identify paths toward enhanced performance of lithium-ion cells are presented.

Cluster Variation Method Analysis of Correlations and Entropy in BCC Solid Solutions

Solid solutions occur when multiple chemical species share sites of a common crystal lattice. Although the single site occupation is random, chemical interaction preferences bias the occupation probabilities of neighboring sites, and this bias reduced the entropy of mixing below its ideal value. Sufficiently strong bias leads to symmetry-breaking phase transitions. Here, we apply the cluster variation method to explore solid solutions on body centered cubic lattices in the context of two specific compounds that exhibit opposite ordering trends. Employing density functional theory to model the energetics, we show that CuZn exhibits an order-disorder transition to the CsCl prototype structure, while AlLi instead takes the NaTl prototype structure, and we evaluate their temperature-dependent order parameters, correlations and entropies.
