Evidence for extended radio emission surrounding RX Puppis

Evidence for an approximately 1-arcsec extended structure in 6 cm continuum emission emanating from the symbiotic star system RX Puppis is reported. Hourly continuum flux changes were not detected as suggested in previous radio experiments by others. The observations indicate that the predominant nature of the radio emission is thermal and consistent with an optically thick stellar wind emanating from the symbiotic star system. The results presented here are discussed with regard to other similar stellar binary systems.

Observations of several new transitions of interstellar HCO

Four new transitions of the interstellar formyl radical, HCO have been detected. Five transitions are now known for interstellar HCO, and thus its identification is secure. The column density found by assuming NGC 2024 is an extended source is N subT(HCO) = (8.5 + or - 4.0) x 10 to the 12th/sq cm. This gives a fractional abundance (abundance relative to hydrogen) for NGC 2024 which agrees quite well with some theoretical predictions. Several unidentified lines were detected and are reported here. Tentative identification for some of the unidentified lines are suggested.

C2 imagery of the inner coma of Comet IRAS-Araki-Alcock

May 10, 1983 observations of the comet IRAS-Araki-Alcock are analyzed to determine the spatial molecular abundance of C2 in the inner coma, via the Delta-v = +1 Swan band sequence near 4690 A. The observations indicate a deficiency of C2 emission across a projected diameter of about 2000 km that is centered on the peak of continuum emission. Comet imagery indicates a sunward-pointing coma that suggests an outburst of subsurface volatile ices through a nonvolatile surface crust, as predicted for periodic comets. These results are discussed in the framework of instrumental and observational constraints.

An attempt to detect mass loss from Alpha Lyrae with the VLA

The interpretation of the infrared excess from Alpha Lyrae as seen by the Infrared Astronomy Satellite in terms of thermal emission from a circumstellar shell of large particles follows from the recognition that small dust grains would be removed from the vicinity of the star by radiation pressure and Poynting-Robertson drag. However, this explanation is viable only if there is no resupply of small grains via mass loss from Alpha Lyr itself. Radio-continuum observations were used to constrain the stellar mass loss to less than 3.4 x 10 to the -10th solar mass/yr. The observations thus support the conclusion that the infrared excess is due to residual solid matter from the prestellar nebula.

Observations of the SiC2 radical toward IRC + 10216 at 1.27 centimeters

The first centimeter-wave transition of the recently identified SiC2 radical has been observed in the envelope of the evolved carbon star IRC + 10216. The excellent agreement between the measured astronomical rest frequency and the predicted frequency, and the measured line intensity support the SiC2 identification. The high-resolution line profile and mapping data are used to estimate the size of the IRC + 10216 SiC2 envelope and the abundance of SiC2 relative to H2.

The R Aquarii system at optical and radio wavelengths

New continuum observations of all radio components of the R Aquarii system at 2, 6, and 20 cm are reported which allow determination of polarization properties, integrated flux levels, spectral indices, and hence the emission mechanisms of the individual components. Complementary wide-band optical observations are also reported to help determine the nature and structure of the compact double radio source (CDRS) and the R Aquarii radio jet. The results of these observations are discussed in detail with regard to models currently or previously proposed for the R Aquarii system. It is concluded that the compact H II region spectral index is about +0.6, indicative of a thermal and optically thick expanding wind from the long-period variable. The radio jet emission is shown to be optically thin, thermal, cospatial with optical emission, and stable over the last few years. The CDRS is shown to be an extragalactic background object.

Radio searches for additional interstellar molecules

Observations in the 2-mm wavelength range are reported which yield new interstellar molecular transitions of NH2CHO, SO2, H2CCO, U150820.5, and U150850.0 toward Sgr B2, and SO2, CH2CHCN, HCOOCH3, and U153513.0 toward Orion A. The first interstellar searches for HOCl, CH3CH2CCH, and CH3SiH3 were conducted, but these species were not detected. During these observations limits were also obtained on 2-mm wave transitions of N2O and NaOH toward several galactic sources of molecular emission.

The kinetic temperature and CH3CCH column density profiles in SGR B2, Orion, and Dr 21

Kinetic temperatures, T(kin), are presently estimated by means of a technique employing the intensities of the adjacent rotational transitions of symmetric top molecules, under the assumptions that the metastable levels are thermalized, and that the excitation temperature connecting the upper level of the observed transition to the lowest level in the K ladder is the same for the both adjacent transitions. The method is applied to observations of the J = 5-4 and J = 6-5 transitions of CH3CCH obtained at 1-arcmin intervals along a NS-EW cross that centered on Orion KL, Sgr B2, and Dr 21. The technique's application to CH3CN lines from the central positions of Sgr B2 and Orion produces T(kin) values that are in good agreement with other determinations. The fact that these lines are broader than those of CH3CCH is interpreted in terms of a model in which CH3CN emission is confined to small and warm core region while CH3CCH emission is dominated by a more extensive, almost isothermal and cooler halo region in Orion KL and Sgr B2.

Comparison of C(+) distributions with new interstellar sources of HCO emission

The present investigation is concerned with two new sources of HCO emission (Sgr B2 and DR 21). The column densities of HCO are low in all objects observed. The data are consistent with HCO being located near appreciable sources of ultraviolet excitation as predicted by dJDB models. The correlation of C(+) and HCO expected from these models is less certain. Although two examples of good correlation are found (NGC 2024 and DR 21), three other regions (Sgr B2, Orion A, and Rho Oph) were observed where either CRRL emission was present and not HCO emission or vice versa. It is possible that this could be a result of low sensitivity or incomplete sampling or source geometry.

An extensive galactic search for conformer II glycine

The most extensive galactic search reported to date for conformer II glycine, a higher energy form of the simplest amino acid has been conducted. The search utilized four glycine transitions at centimeter wavelengths and 21 at millimeter wavelengths to observe 18 galactic molecular sources and one comet. No conformer II glycine lines were detected, and measurements of representative sources were used to compute upper limits on total column densities. Several unidentified lines were detected and are reported here with some suggested possible identifications.

High spatial resolution VLA observations of the R Aquarii jet

The Very Large Array was used to observe the jet feature of the symbiotic variable R Aquarii. A steady emission at 6 cm was confirmed for the past year, with the jet located 6.4 arcsec from R Aquarii at 29.3 deg PA. A velocity for the jet has been calculated as 40 km/sec, and may be accompanied by an ejection velocity in the range of 760-1800 km/sec. Since R Aquarii is the closest known object with a jet, further monitoring is recommended in order to detect any episodic mass transfer in what may be a binary system. The mass transfer, monitored at various wavelengths, would account for the observed optical and radio properties.

Detection of interstellar sodium hydroxide in self-absorption toward the galactic center

A weak self-absorbed emission line, which is identified as the J = 4-3 transition of sodium hydroxide, has been detected in the direction of Sgr B2(OH). The correspondingly weak Sgr B2(QH) emission line U75406, previously reported as an unidentified spectral feature by other investigators, is consistent with the J = 3-2 transition of sodium hydroxide. This detection may represent the first evidence of a grain reaction formation mechanism for simple metal hydroxides. The detection of H62 Delta toward Orion A is also reported.

On OMC-1 temperatures determined from methyl cyanide observations

An analysis is performed on the J(k) = 12(k)-11(k) and 13(k)-12(k) transitions of methyl cyanide detected by other investigators in the direction of OMC-1. The original interpretation of those observations argues for the presence of two distinct temperature regions or possibly a temperature gradient within the cloud. The analysis presented here demonstrates that the observations of these particular molecular transitions are consistent with a single methyl cyanide emission region with a source kinetic temperature of 121.2 + or - 8.2 K and a molecular rotational temperature of 16.6 + or - 1.8 K.

Probing the presently tenuous link between comets and the origin of life

The possibilities of using millimeter-wave technology to probe the subsurface processes of comets to investigate links between cometary materials and the origins of life are explored. It is noted that current theories hold that the necessities for life to begin comprise a fairly uniform temperature, the presence of a solvent to give materials mobility, and the presence of atoms which can form long chains of molecules. Consideration is given to two cometary nuclei models: a core with an equal amount of liquid water and lunar material, and a nucleus with equal amounts of frozen water ice and lunar material. Solutions to the radiative transfer equation for the two models are presented to characterize identifiable emissions using radiometric spectrometer instrumentation on a spacecraft. Particular species such as OH, CN, HCN, and glycine are expected to be detectable if present.

Detection of the torsionally excited state of methanol in Orion A

Torsionally excited methanol has been detected in Orion A, where three emission lines observed in the region of 93-100 GHz coincide with laboratory measurements of three methanol transitions. Torsionally excited methanol may therefore be used as a novel temperature probe, since this state lies near 200 per cm above the ground state, or about 290 K. No emission was detected from the transition arising from levels near 300 per cm, or approximately 430 K above the ground state.

New interstellar molecular transitions in the 2 millimeter range

A Sgr B2 kinetic temperature of about 47 K is derived based on observations of K components of the 9K-8K transition of CH3CCH. Interstellar line emission is detected in the 2 mm wavelength region from SO, (S-34)O, SO2, CH3OH, CH3CCH, CH3CH2CN, HC3N, and nine unidentified transitions. The methylacetylene K component data combined with the derived data reduction technique, demonstrates the utility of the molecule as a temperature probe of molecular clouds when two or more rotational transitions are observed. Evidence for the existence of interstellar HNO is presented, and an attempt is made to detect sulfuric acid, formic anhydride, and the 0-18 isotopic for CO2 in interstellar clouds and in the Venusian atmosphere during inferior conjunction.

Millimeter-wave experiments for cometary space missions

Predicted brightness temperatures, computed by means of radiative transfer techniques adapted from the modeling of terrestrial ice and snow fields, are given for cometary nucleus models consisting of homogeneous layers of water ice and refractory grain mixtures presented as functions of wavelength. The computed millimeter-wave spectra are sensitive to the values of such physically significant nucleus parameters as (1) crust thickness, (2) subsurface temperature gradient, and (3) sublimating surface boundary temperature. Although antenna beam dilution is a major obstacle for ground-based molecular spectral line radio observations of comets, a millimeter-wave radiometer in the vicinity of the comet would be immune to this effect and able to make observations of several candidate parent molecules in the gas phase.
