Emergency Brake for Tracked Vehicles

Caliper brake automatically stops tracked vehicle as vehicle nears end of travel. Bar on vehicle, traveling to right, dislodges block between brake pads. Pads then press against bar, slowing vehicle by friction. Emergencybraking system suitable for elevators, amusement rides and machine tools.

Self-charging metering and dispensing device for fluids

A self-metering and dispensing device for fluids obtained from a pressurized fluid supply is discussed. Tubing and valving means permit the introduction of fluid into and discharge from a closed cylindrical reservoir. The reservoir contains a slideably disposed piston co-acting with a coil compression spring, with piston travel determining the amount of fluid in the reservoir. Once the determined amount of fluid is introduced into the reservoir, the fluid is discharged by the force of the coil compression spring acting upon the piston.

Device Stores and Discharges Metered Fluid

Hand-held container accepts measured amount of liquid from pressurized supply. Supply pressure drives spring-loaded piston that stores enough mechanical energy to discharge measured liquid into another container. Original application of container was to rehydrate sterilized pre-packaged food in zerogravity environment of space vehicles. Possible terrestrial applicatios include dispensing of toxic fluids or metering of fluids for household, commercial or laboratory uses.

Latch With Single-Motion Release

Quick-load/quick-release mechanism allows an object such as a battery to be inserted with a single motion, locks and latches the object, and allows the object to be released with a single motion.

Compact positioning flange

Flange adjusts center of rotation of gimble-mounted objects such as telescopes. Three aluminum plates are machined to have interlocking orthogonal keys and ways. Outer plate is mounted to shaft. Inner plate is attached to object. Middle and inner plate slide along on axis. Screws slide in slots parallel to ways for adjustment, then tighten to lock position along each axis. Device is similar to crossed ways found on industrial machine tools, but simpler, lighter, and much smaller.

Development of a bedrest muscle stress apparatus

In attempting further to define the deleterious effects of spaceflight on the human body, measurement systems and techniques were devised to determine the loss of skeletal muscle strength and tone as a result of spaceflight exposure. In order to determine how the muscle degradation process progresses with time during nonuse, a system for measuring muscle stress during bedrest was developed. The Bedrest Muscle Stress Apparatus is configured to slip snugly over the foot board of a standard hospital bed. Data collected with this device correlated well with pre- and post-bedrest data collected with the original skeletal muscle stress apparatus.
