Intelligent Hierarchical Resilient Operation of Distribution Systems: Implementation and Validation in a Power Hardware-in-the-Loop Simulation Testbed

This paper reports on the structure of a power hardware-in-the-loop (PHIL) simulation testbed that implements, tests, and validates a novel AI-based hierarchical resilient operation model for distribution systems. The testbed implements the central and distributed controllers of the hierarchical resilient operation model and integrates a Digital Real-Time Simulator (DRTS), protective relays, a Real-Time Automation Controller (RTAC), a Software Defined Network (SDN) switch, and a battery energy storage (BES) system. The testbed provides comprehensive real-time visualization and monitoring capability as an advanced situational awareness and operator interface solution. The IEEE 33-node system is used as a test case to test and validate the operation of the model in normal operation and recovery operation after major outages in a fully automated fashion.

Resilience Analytics for Interdependent Power and Water Distribution Systems

The occurrence of large-scale outages in power distribution systems (PDSs) caused, for instance, by extreme weather events has raised concerns on the cascading impact of the power outages on the resilience of other critical infrastructures, including water distribution systems (WDSs), whose healthy operation highly relies on the availability of power from PDSs. Here, this paper proposes an analytics model for quantifying the interdependence between the resilience of power and water distribution systems. The proposed model first performs spatio-temporal outage analysis on the PDS and WDS to determine the PDS power serving capability and the resulting cascading impact on the WDS water serving capability during the occurrence of disruptions. The resilience interdependence is then determined by a proposed set of six metrics calculated using the power and water serving capability profiles, which trace and quantify the cascading impacts of power outages in the operation of WDSs during the degradation and recovery stages. The proposed analytics model is implemented on the IEEE 33-bus power distribution system supplying power for pumping stations of a 15-node test WDS, considering multiple cases of water storage capacity, single and multiple outage scenarios, and availability of distributed generation. The numerical results demonstrate that the proposed metrics track the temporal and spatial interdependence between the resilience of power and water distribution systems, providing a mechanism to identify weak spots, and assess options to enhance the resilience of the critical water infrastructure.

On the Verification of Deep Reinforcement Learning Solution for Intelligent Operation of Distribution Grids

Capabilities of deep reinforcement learning (DRL) in obtaining fast decision policies in high dimensional and stochastic environments have led to its extensive use in operational research, including the operation of distribution grids with high penetration of distributed energy resources (DER). However, the feasibility and robustness of DRL solutions are not guaranteed for the system operator, and hence, those solutions may be of limited practical value. This paper proposes an analytical method to find feasibility ellipsoids that represent the range of multi-dimensional system states in which the DRL solution is guaranteed to be feasible. Empirical studies and stochastic sampling determine the ratio of the discovered to the actual feasible space as a function of the sample size. In addition, the performance of logarithmic, linear, and exponential penalization of infeasibility during the DRL training are studied and compared in order to reduce the number of infeasible solutions
