Two-dimensional perovskite templates for durable, efficient formamidinium perovskite solar cells

We present a design strategy for fabricating ultrastable phase-pure films of formamidinium lead iodide (FAPbI 3 ) by lattice templating using specific two-dimensional (2D) perovskites with FA as the cage cation. When a pure FAPbI 3 precursor solution is brought in contact with the 2D perovskite, the black phase forms preferentially at 100°C, much lower than the standard FAPbI 3 annealing temperature of 150°C. X-ray diffraction and optical spectroscopy suggest that the resulting FAPbI 3 film compresses slightly to acquire the (011) interplanar distances of the 2D perovskite seed. The 2D-templated bulk FAPbI 3 films exhibited an efficiency of 24.1% in a p-i-n architecture with 0.5–square centimeter active area and an exceptional durability, retaining 97% of their initial efficiency after 1000 hours under 85°C and maximum power point tracking.

Reversible and Irreversible Layer Edge Relaxation in Laser–Radiation–Hardened 2D Organic–Inorganic Perovskite Crystals

The layer edge states or low energy state (LES) in 2D hybrid organic–inorganic perovskites demonstrate a prolonged carrier lifetime for better performance of optoelectronic devices. However, the fundamental understanding of LES in 2D perovskites is still inconclusive. Herein, a photoluminescence (PL) study of LES in 2D Ruddlesden–Popper perovskites is presented with n = 2 and n = 3 from their cleaved cross sections that are more stable than the natural edge. The PL measurements clearly observe reversible, and irreversible surface relaxations (case I and case II) in three laser intensity ranges, further supported by a PL excitation cycle from low to high laser intensity, and vice versa. The PL wavelength of LES is tunable with laser intensity and blueshifts with increasing laser intensity during irreversible surface relaxation process (case I). Fluorescence lifetime imaging (FLIM) shows that the LES has a longer lifetime than the band-edge emission in the sample without a photodegradation, while the BE lifetime becomes relatively longer in the area with a photodegradation. Furthermore, the presented laser tunable LES and the related irreversible relaxation process provide a new insight that can help improve the photostability in 2D perovskites and understand roles of LESs in optoelectronic device performance.

Ultrafast relaxation of lattice distortion in two-dimensional perovskites

Direct visualization of ultrafast coupling between charge carriers and lattice degrees of freedom in photoexcited semiconductors has remained a long-standing challenge and is critical for understanding the light-induced physical behaviour of materials under extreme non-equilibrium conditions. Here we obtain a direct visualization of the structural dynamics in monocrystalline 2D perovskites. We achieve this by monitoring the evolution of wavevector-resolved ultrafast electron diffraction intensity following above-bandgap high-density photoexcitation. Our analysis reveals a light-induced ultrafast reduction in antiferro-distortion resulting from a strong interaction between the electron–hole plasma and perovskite lattice, which induces an in-plane octahedra rotation towards a more symmetric phase. Correlated ultrafast spectroscopy performed at the same carrier density as ultrafast electron diffraction reveals that the creation of a dense electron–hole plasma triggers the relaxation of lattice distortion at shorter timescales by modulating the crystal cohesive energy. Then we show that the interaction between carrier gas and lattice can be altered by tailoring the rigidity of the 2D perovskite by choosing an appropriate organic spacer layer.

Light-activated interlayer contraction in two-dimensional perovskites for high-efficiency solar cells

Understanding and tailoring the physical behaviour of halide perovskites under practical environments is critical for designing efficient and durable optoelectronic devices. Here, we report that continuous light illumination leads to >1% contraction in the out-of-plane direction in two-dimensional hybrid perovskites, which is reversible and strongly dependent on the specific superlattice packing. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements show that constant light illumination results in the accumulation of positive charges in the terminal iodine atoms, thereby enhancing the bonding character of inter-slab I–I interactions across the organic barrier and activating out-of-plane contraction. Correlated charge transport, structural and photovoltaic measurements confirm that the onset of the light-induced contraction is synchronized to a threefold increase in carrier mobility and conductivity, which is consistent with an increase in the electronic band dispersion predicted by first-principles calculations. Flux-dependent space-charge-limited current measurement reveals that light-induced interlayer contraction activates interlayer charge transport. Lastly, the enhanced charge transport boosts the photovoltaic efficiency of two-dimensional perovskite solar cells up to 18.3% by increasing the device’s fill factor and open-circuit voltage.
