Whole-Voltage-Range Solid-Solution Reaction in Layered Oxide Cathode of Sodium-Ion Batteries

Layered manganese-based oxides (LMOs) are promising cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) due to their versatile structures. However, the Jahn–Teller effect of Mn 3+ induces severe distortion of MnO 6 octahedra, and the resultant low symmetry is responsible for the gliding of MnO 2 layers and then inferior multiple-phase transitions upon Na + extraction/insertion. Here, hexagonal P2-Na 0.643 Li 0.078 Mn 0.827 Ti 0.095 O 2 is synthesized through the incorporation of Li and Ti into the distorted orthorhombic P'2-Na 0.67 MnO 2 to function as a phase-transition-free oxide cathode. Further, it is revealed that Li in both the transition-metal and Na layers enhances the covalency of Mn–O bonds and allows degeneracy of Mn 3d e g orbitals to favor the formation of hexagonal phase, and the high strength of Ti–O bonds reduces the electrostatic interaction between Na and O for suppressed Na + /vacancy rearrangements. These collectively lead to a whole-voltage-range solid-solution reaction between 1.8 and 4.3 V with a small volume variation of 1.49%. This rewards its excellent cycling stability (capacity retention of 90% after 500 cycles) and rate capability (89 mAh g -1 at 2000 mA g -1 ).

Realizing High Capacity and Zero Strain in Layered Oxide Cathodes via Lithium Dual-Site Substitution for Sodium-Ion Batteries

Sodium-ion batteries have garnered unprecedented attention as an electrochemical energy storage technology, but it remains challenging to design high-energy-density cathode materials with low structural strain during the dynamic (de)sodiation processes. In this paper, we report a P2-layered lithium dual-site-substituted Na 0.7 Li 0.03 [Mg 0.15 Li 0.07 Mn 0.75 ]O 2 (NMLMO) cathode material, in which Li ions occupy both transition-metal (TM) and alkali-metal (AM) sites. The combination of theoretical calculations and experimental characterizations reveals that Li TM creates Na–O–Li electronic configurations to boost the capacity derived from the oxygen anionic redox, while Li AM serves as LiO 6 prismatic pillars to stabilize the layered structure through suppressing the detrimental phase transitions. As a result, NMLMO delivers a high specific capacity of 266 mAh g –1 and simultaneously exhibits the nearly zero-strain characteristic within a wide voltage range of 1.5–4.6 V. Our findings highlight the effective way of dual-site substitution to break the capacity–stability trade-off in cathode materials for advanced rechargeable batteries.

Local Modulation of Single-Atomic Mn Sites for Enhanced Ambient Ammonia Electrosynthesis

Rationally tuning the local structures of single-atomic active sites for the electrocatalytic N 2 reduction reaction (NRR) remains an urgent but worthwhile research topic. Herein, we accomplish the local modulation of single-atomic Mn sites and construct single Mn–O 3 N 1 sites anchored on porous carbon (Mn–O 3 N 1 /PC) by delicately controlling the Mn–O bonding conditions. Furthermore, the constructed structures are confirmed via the combination of atomic-scale imaging, Raman spectroscopy, synchrotron radiation-based soft and hard X-ray absorption spectroscopies, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The Mn–O 3 N 1 /PC catalyst yields an NH 3 yield rate of 66.41 μg h –1 mg cat. –1 (corresponding to 1.56 mg h –1 mg Mn –1 ) at -0.35 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode, which is about four times that on the control Mn–N 4 /PC catalyst. The enhanced NRR performance is ascribed to its unique geometry and electronic structures, which not only facilitate the adsorption and activation of the N 2 molecule but also lower the free energy change of the potential-determining step.
