Tunable quantum anomalous Hall effects in ferromagnetic van der Waals heterostructures

ABSTRACT The quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE) has unique advantages in topotronic applications, but it is still challenging to realize the QAHE with tunable magnetic and topological properties for building functional devices. Through systematic first-principles calculations, we predict that the in-plane magnetization induced QAHE with Chern numbers C = ±1 and the out-of-plane magnetization induced QAHE with high Chern numbers C = ±3 can be realized in a single material candidate, which is composed of van der Waals (vdW) coupled Bi and MnBi2Te4 monolayers. The switching between different phases of QAHE can be controlled in multiple ways, such as applying strain or (weak) magnetic field or twisting the vdW materials. The prediction of an experimentally available material system hosting robust, highly tunable QAHE will stimulate great research interest in the field. Our work opens a new avenue for the realization of tunable QAHE and provides a practical material platform for the development of topological electronics.

Multifunctional two-dimensional van der Waals Janus magnet Cr-based dichalcogenide halides

Two-dimensional van der Waals Janus materials and their heterostructures offer fertile platforms for designing fascinating functionalities. Here, by means of systematic first-principles studies on van der Waals Janus monolayer Cr-based dichalcogenide halides CrYX (Y = S, Se, Te; X = Cl, Br, I), we find that CrSX (X = Cl, Br, I) are the very desirable high T C ferromagnetic semiconductors with an out-of-plane magnetization. Excitingly, by the benefit of the large magnetic moments on ligand S 2- anions, the sought-after large-gap quantum anomalous Hall effect and sizable valley splitting can be achieved through the magnetic proximity effect in van der Waals heterostructures CrSBr/Bi 2 Se 3 /CrSBr and MoTe 2 /CrSBr, respectively. Additionally, we show that large Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interactions give rise to skyrmion states in CrTeX (X = Cl, Br, I) under external magnetic fields. Our work reveals that two-dimensional Janus magnet Cr-based dichalcogenide halides have appealing multifunctionalities in the applications of topological electronic and valleytronic devices.

Tuning the interfacial spin-orbit coupling with ferroelectricity

Detection and manipulation of spin current lie in the core of spintronics. Here we report an active control of a net spin Hall angle, θ SHE (net), in Pt at an interface with a ferroelectric material PZT (PbZr 0.2 Ti 0.8 O 3 ), using its ferroelectric polarization. The spin Hall angle in the ultra-thin Pt layer is measured using the inverse spin Hall effect with a pulsed tunneling current from a ferromagnetic La 0.67 Sr 0.33 MnO 3 electrode. The effect of the ferroelectric polarization on θ SHE (net) is enhanced when the thickness of the Pt layer is reduced. When the Pt layer is thinner than 6 nm, switching the ferroelectric polarization even changes the sign of θ SHE (net). This is attributed to the reversed polarity of the spin Hall angle in the 1 st -layer Pt at the PZT/Pt interface when the ferroelectric polarization is inverted, as supported by the first-principles calculations. These findings suggest a route for designing future energy efficient spin-orbitronic devices using ferroelectric control.

Control of magnetic properties of MnBi 2 Te 4 using a van der Waals ferroelectric III 2 -VI 3 film and biaxial strain

Using the first-principles calculations, we systematically investigated magnetic properties of a MnBi 2 Te 4 (MBT) monolayer in contact with III 2 -VI 3 two-dimensional ferroelectric substrates. As the electric polarization in the ferroelectric films is switched, a semiconductor to half-metal transition occurs in MBT, and its magnetic easy axis in several cases reorients. As an example, the Curie temperature of MBT/In 2 Se 3 can be enhanced to 21.5 or 32 K under the influence of electric polarization and biaxial strain, much higher than that of the pristine MBT monolayer, which is 14.5 K in our calculations. Our results in this work suggest effective ways to tune magnetic properties of MBT and provide useful insights for the further development of these important van der Waals functional materials.

Evaluating the exfoliation of two-dimensional materials with a Green's function surface model

Previous methods for the evaluation of the exfoliation of two-dimensional (2D) layered materials have drawbacks in computational efficiency and are unable to describe cases with semi-infinite substrates. Based on a Green's function surface (GFS) model, here we develop an approach to efficiently determine the tendency of exfoliation of 2D materials from their bulk crystals or semi-infinite substrates. By constructing appropriate surface configurations, we may calculate the exfoliation energy more precisely and quickly than the traditional way with the slab model. Furthermore, the GFS approach can provide angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy of surface systems for direct comparison with experimental data. In this work, our findings indicate that the GFS approach is powerful for studies of 2D materials and various surface problems.
