Mechanisms of isothermal phase transformations in rapidly solidified Ti-24Al-11Nb

A dynamic simulation for the motion of an isolated superdislocation (SD) under an applied stress is presented. The simulation incorporates the concept that cross slip from (111) planes to (010) planes can locally pin the SD. It is determined that the principal effect of cross-slip-pinning is not the reduction in the SD velocity, but rather the exhaustion of the density of mobile SDs.

Stability of the ordered orthorhombic phase in Ti-24Al-11Nb

The ordered orthorhombic 'O' phase in the Ti-Al-Nb ordered alloy system emerges either through slow cooling from above 1200 C or through isothermal aging after quenching from that temperature regime. An experimental investigation is presently conducted of the structural relationship between the O and alpha(2) phases, in order to clarify the mechanism of transition between the two. The transition occurs with the formation of a platelike alpha(2) phase within the O matrix, and may be characterized as due to a shape-deformation mechanism associated with diffusion of excess Nb away from the O/alpha(2) interface.

Structural relationships between the T and O phases in Ti-24Al-11Nb

TEM and electron diffraction are presently used to characterize the structural relationships between the ordered tetragonal (T) and ordered orthorhombic (O) phases of a rapidly solidified Ti-24Al-11Nb alloy. It is established that the transition from the T to the O phase is explainable in terms of a shape-deformation mechanism, and that the T/O interface (habit) plane approximates -2 2 3 sub T. Attention is given to the orientation relationships between the two phases.

A new ordered tetragonal phase in the Ti3Al+Nb system

Results are reported from an experimental study of phase stability in a plasma-sprayed Ti3Al+Nb alloy using TEM and electron diffraction techniques. The alloys was produced from Ti3Al+Nb powder via an inductively coupled plasma deposition process. Evidence was found for the ordering of the B2 phase to a structure similar to the DO3-type phase, but with a tetragonal distortion. An ordered tetragonal phase (T) is proposed to account for these observations, and the existence of the B2 - T ordering transformation in the Ti3Al+Nb system is suggested. The T phase can be regarded as a DO3-like phase with a tetragonal distortion. The tegragonality c0/a0 is approximately equal to 1.02, and a0 equals 0.65 +/-0.01 nm.

Intelligent processing of intermetallic composite consolidation

Intermetallic composites based upon titanium aluminide matrices and silicon carbide of aluminum oxide fibers are emerging candidates for future hypersonic vehicle airframes and engines. To tailor the properties of these 'engineered' materials for specific application, to increase process yield, and to reduce costs, 'intelligent processing of materials' (IPM) control strategies are being explored for their processing. Recent progress is evaluated in the development of predictive process models, advanced sensors and control methodologies (the components of the IPM approach) for the critical near net-shape consolidation process step of continuous fiber reinforced intermetallic composite manufacture.
