Review of Particle Physics - Scalar Mesons below 1 GeV

The summarizes much of particle physics and cosmology. Using data from previous editions, plus 2,717 new measurements from 869 papers, we list, evaluate, and average measured properties of gauge bosons and the recently discovered Higgs boson, leptons, quarks, mesons, and baryons. We summarize searches for hypothetical particles such as supersymmetric particles, heavy bosons, axions, dark photons, etc. Particle properties and search limits are listed in Summary Tables. We give numerous tables, figures, formulae, and reviews of topics such as Higgs Boson Physics, Supersymmetry, Grand Unified Theories, Neutrino Mixing, Dark Energy, Dark Matter, Cosmology, Particle Detectors, Colliders, Probability and Statistics. Most of the 120 reviews are updated, including many that are heavily revised. The is divided into two volumes. Volume 1 includes the Summary Tables and 97 review articles. Volume 2 consists of the Particle Listings and contains also 23 reviews that address specific aspects of the data presented in the Listings. The complete (both volumes) is published online on the website of the Particle Data Group () and in a journal. Volume 1 is available in print as the . A with the Summary Tables and essential tables, figures, and equations from selected review articles is available in print, as a web version optimized for use on phones, and as an Android app. The 2024 edition of the Review of Particle Physics should be cited as: S. Search for low-mass electron-recoil dark matter using a single-charge sensitive SuperCDMS-HVeV Detector

We present constraints on low mass dark matter-electron scattering and absorption interactions using a SuperCDMS high-voltage eV-resolution (HVeV) detector. Data were taken underground in the NEXUS facility located at Fermilab with an overburden of 225 meters of water equivalent. The experiment benefits from the minimizing of luminescence from the printed circuit boards in the detector holder used in all previous HVeV studies. A blind analysis of $6.1\,\mathrm{g\cdot days}$ of exposure produces exclusion limits for dark matter-electron scattering cross-sections for masses as low as $1\,\mathrm{MeV}/c^2$, as well as on the photon-dark photon mixing parameter and the coupling constant between axion-like particles and electrons for particles with masses $>1.2\,\mathrm{eV}/c^2$ probed via absorption processes.

Mechanical design of a low concentration ratio solar array for a space station application

This paper describes a preliminary study and conceptual design of a low concentration ratio solar array for a space station application with approximately a 100 kW power requirement. The baseline design calls for a multiple series of inverted, truncated, pyramidal optical elements with a geometric concentration ratio (GCR) of 6. It also calls for low life cycle cost, simple on-orbit maintainability, 1984 technology readiness date, and gallium arsenide (GaAs) of silicon (Si) solar cell interchangeability. Due to the large area needed to produce the amount of power required for the baseline space station, a symmetrical wing design, making maximum use of the commonality of parts approach, was taken. This paper will describe the mechanical and structural design of a mass-producible solar array that is very easy to tailor to the needs of the individual user requirement.

Thermal barrier coatings for thermal insulation and corrosion resistance in industrial gas turbine engines

Four thermal barrier coatings were subjected to a 500-hour gas turbine engine test. The coatings were two yttria stabilized zirconias, calcium ortho silicate and calcium meta titanate. The calcium silicate coating exhibited significant spalling. Yttria stabilized zirconia and calcium titanate coatings showed little degradation except in blade leading edge areas. Post-test examination showed variations in the coating due to manual application techniques. Improved process control is required if engineering quality coatings are to be developed. The results indicate that some leading edge loss of the coating can be expected near the tip.

A pentahedral pyramidal concentrator design for space solar array

A truncated pentahedral pyramidal solar concentrator configuration has been selected as the most favorable candidate capable of providing low-cost multi-hundred-kilowatts (kW) solar array in low earth orbit. This concentrator has the advantages of: commonality for applications using either gallium arsenide (GaAs) or silicon (Si) solar cells, cost effectiveness, structural simplicity, and compatibility with the Shuttle. Results of concentrator optical ray trace, benefit of radiator, deployment mechanism, array power, and cost analysis are discussed.

Internally coated air-cooled gas turbine blading

Ten candidate modified nickel-aluminide coatings were developed using the slip pack process. These coatings contain additives such as silicon, chromium and columbium in a nickel-aluminum coating matrix with directionally solidified MAR-M200 + Hf as the substrate alloy. Following a series of screening tests which included strain tolerance, dynamic oxidation and hot corrosion testing, the Ni-19A1-1Cb (nominal composition) coating was selected for application to the internal passages of four first-stage turbine blades. Process development results indicate that a dry pack process is suitable for internal coating application resulting in 18 percent or less reduction in air flow. Coating uniformity, based on coated air-cooled blades, was within + or - 20 percent. Test results show that the presence of additives (silicon, chromium or columbium) appeared to improve significantly the ductility of the NiA1 matrix. However, the environmental resistance of these modified nickel-aluminides were generally inferior to the simple aluminides.

Ionized dopant concentrations at the heavily doped surface of a silicon solar cell

Data are combined with concentrations obtained by a bulk measurement method using successive layer removal with measurements of Hall effect and resistivity. From the MOS (metal-oxide-semiconductor) measurements it is found that the ionized dopant concentration N has the value (1.4 + or - 0.1) x 10 to the 20th power/cu cm at distances between 100 and 220 nm from the n(+) surface. The bulk measurement technique yields average values of N over layers whose thickness is 2000 nm. Results show that, at the higher concentrations encountered at the n(+) surface, the MOS C-V technique, when combined with a bulk measurement method, can be used to evaluate the effects of materials preparation methodologies on the surface and near surface concentrations of silicon cells.

An investigation of impurity redistribution in diffused layer on /n+/-p silicon solar cells parameters

Recent calculations by Wang et al. (1974) have shown that the short-circuit current for silicon solar cells is sensitive to the impurity distribution in the diffused and base region. In the present work, these theoretical results were verified by experimentally investigating the impurity profile and sheet resistance of the diffused layers of (n+)-p silicon solar cells fabricated by normal diffusion processes and at subsequently various drive-in times. Impurity profiles of the n+ diffused layer, measured by differential Hall and resistivity technique, resemble the erfc distribution. The junction depth is larger as drive-in time increases. Measured short-circuit current is in agreement with calculated ones. Open-circuit voltage is independent of drive-in times, and its calculated values are consistent with capacitance-voltage measurements.

New methods for preparing n, n-dialkyltrifluoroacetamides

The customary preparative methods for N,N-dialkyltrifluoroacetamides involve the acylation of an amine by trifluoroacetic acid or its derivatives. In this report the synthesis of N,N-dialkyltrifluoroacetamides by reacting trifluoroacetic anhydride or acid with disubstituted formamides and acetamides is discussed. These reactions are interpreted with the aid of gas chromatographic analysis. Different reaction mechanisms are proposed for the reactions of formamides and acetamides with trifluoroacetic anhydride or acid. The use of the proposed reaction mechanisms for the synthesis of other fluorinated compounds is discussed.

Experimental models of communication at the molecular and microsystemic levels.

Communication at both the macromolecular and the (supramacromolecular) microsystemic levels has been demonstrated in artificial polymers and artificial systems. These phenomena are models for communication in evolving and contemporary systems. The significance of a combination of communication at the two levels is emphasized.
