Stress-intensity factors for cracks emanating from the loaded fastener hole

Using a series approach and the Muskhelishvili formulation in the two-dimensional theory of elasticity, stress-intensity factors K are derived for problems in which cracks emanate radially from the boundary of an arbitrarily loaded internal circular hole in an infinite plate. Numerical values are obtained for K(I) and K(II) for radial cracks from a hole containing a loose-fitted pin or rivet that is pulled perpendicular to the crack direction in the plane of the plate. The method is a general one for determining K for a set of symmetrically emanating radial cracks for a variety of concentrated or distributed tractions on the circular hole.

Interaction between an elastic circular inclusion and two symmetrically placed collinear cracks

The paper investigates the fracture toughness of a flat large elastic cracked plate containing an elastic circular inclusion, using the plane stress crack-tip stress intensity factor as a criterion for fracture. In this plane stress geometry, each of the two collinear finite cracks is located on either side of the elastic circular inclusion and the geometry is subjected to uniform stresses at infinity. The analysis is based on the two-dimensional theory of elasticity by using the Muskhelishvili complex variable approach. Numerical calculations are reported for the case of simple tension normal to the crack direction and show the variation of the stress intensity factor with the configuration and elastic properties of the plate and the inclusion.

Elastic-plastic analysis of an infinite sheet having a circular hole under pressure

An exact elastic-plastic solution for the stresses in an infinite sheet having a circular hole subject to pressure is obtained on the basis of J2 deformation theory together with a modified Ramberg-Osgood law. The sheet is orthotropic but isotropic in its plane. The results are assessed on the basis of Budiansky's criterion for the acceptability of J2 deformation theory. By using exact elastic-plastic stresses, the function connecting the pressure at the hole with the radial enlargement is obtained. Upon release of the pressure, residual stresses around the hole are produced.

Fracture angle and strain-energy-density-factor of a crack at hole at an arbitrary angle

For both the maximum stress criterion and strain-energy-density-factor (S) theory, fracture angle (the initial angle of crack growth) is predicted by using opening and sliding mode stress intensity factors. These theoretical predictions are consistent with experimental fracture angles. For the S theory, the crack spreads in the direction of the negative fracture angle in a plane for which S is a minimum. This quantity was obtained analytically. The experimental data of the critical S on plexiglass fracture specimens remains essentially constant.
