Properties of Cosmic Deuterons Measured by the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer

Precision measurements by the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) on the International Space Station of the deuteron (𝐷) flux are presented. The measurements are based on 21 Γ— 10 6 𝐷 nuclei in the rigidity range from 1.9 to 21 GV collected from May 2011 to April 2021. We observe that over the entire rigidity range the 𝐷 flux exhibits nearly identical time variations with the 𝑝, 3 He, and 4 He fluxes. Above 4.5 GV, the 𝐷/ 4 He flux ratio is time independent and its rigidity dependence is well described by a single power law βˆπ‘… Ξ” with Ξ” 𝐷/ 4 He = βˆ’0.108 Β± 0.005. This is in contrast with the 3 He/ 4 He flux ratio for which we find Ξ” 3 He/ 4 He = βˆ’0.289 Β± 0.003. Above ∼13 GV we find a nearly identical rigidity dependence of the 𝐷 and 𝑝 fluxes with a 𝐷/𝑝 flux ratio of 0.027 Β± 0.001. These unexpected observations indicate that cosmic deuterons have a sizable primarylike component. With a method independent of cosmic ray propagation, we obtain the primary component of the 𝐷 flux equal to 9.4 Β± 0.5% of the 4 He flux and the secondary component of the 𝐷 flux equal to 58 Β± 5% of the 3 He flux.

Temporal Structures in Positron Spectra and Charge-Sign Effects in Galactic Cosmic Rays

We present the precision measurements of 11 years of daily cosmic positron fluxes in the rigidity range from 1.00 to 41.9 GV based on 3.4 Γ— 10 6 positrons collected with the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) aboard the International Space Station. The positron fluxes show distinctly different time variations from the electron fluxes at short and long timescales. A hysteresis between the electron fluxes and the positron fluxes is observed with a significance greater than 5⁒𝜎 at rigidities below 8.5 GV. On the contrary, the positron fluxes and the proton fluxes show similar time variation. Remarkably, we found that positron fluxes are modulated more than proton fluxes with a significance greater than 5⁒𝜎 for rigidities below 7 GV. These continuous daily positron fluxes, together with AMS daily electron, proton, and helium fluxes over an 11-year solar cycle, provide unique input to the understanding of both the charge-sign and mass dependencies of cosmic rays in the heliosphere.

Heating events in the nascent solar system recorded by rare earth element isotopic fractionation in refractory inclusions

Equilibrium condensation of solar gas is often invoked to explain the abundance of refractory elements in planets and meteorites. This is partly motivated, by the observation that the depletions in both the least and most refractory rare earth elements (REEs) in meteoritic group II calcium-aluminum–rich inclusions (CAIs) can be reproduced by thermodynamic models of solar nebula condensation. We measured the isotopic compositions of Ce, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Dy, Er, and Yb in eight CAIs to test this scenario. Contrary to expectation for equilibrium condensation, we find light isotope enrichment for the most refractory REEs and more subdued isotopic variations for the least refractory REEs. This suggests that group II CAIs formed by a two-stage process involving fast evaporation of preexisting materials, followed by near-equilibrium recondensation. The calculated time scales are consistent with heating in events akin to FU Orionis– or EX Lupi–type outbursts of eruptive pre–main-sequence stars.

A study of the optical and ultraviolet spectral characteristics and of the circumstellar material around the new luminous blue variable WRA 751

The LBV characteristics of the new LBV candidate WRA 751 suggested by Hu et al. (1990) are studied in greater detail. A comparison is made with observational characteristics of the well-known LBVs Ag Car and HR Car using photometric and spectroscopic data of Hu et al. supplemented with an IUE spectrum and direct CCD images in H-alpha, blue, and red. It is found that the spectra of WRA 751 and HR Car discussed in this paper are similar to the minimum-phase spectrum of AG Car and therefore resemble the Of/WN 9 spectral type. The characteristics of the optical, near- and far-UV (IUE) spectra of the Fe II spectrum in these wavelength regions is due to continuum fluorescence. The H, He I, Fe II and forbidden Fe II emission lines are formed in different parts of the stars' envelopes, corresponding to their expanding velocities. It is concluded that WRA 751 has properties which fit well the LBV properties at minimum-brightness phase, and possesses circumstellar material with observational properties similar to those of the known LBVs AG Car and HR Car.

Ultraviolet, visual, and infrared studies of galactic extreme emission line objects with very large IR-excess

Some preliminary results of a study of extreme emission line objects (EELOs) are presented. These stars are selected from H alpha emission line stars having a strong IR excess. The study is based on multiwavelength photometric and spectroscopic observations. Special attention is paid to the detailed study of the correlation between spectroscopic and photometric variations, which indicate the activity of the star. The ultraviolet and infrared extinction characteristics of the circumstellar material are given special attention.

WRA 751, a candidate for a new luminous blue variable

Results are presened on spectroscopic observations (carried out with the ESO 1.52-m telescope at La Silla, Chile) and measurements made by the Infrared Astronomical Satellite on the star WRA 751. It is estimated that the T(eff) of this star is 30,000 K and its E(B-V) is 1.8 mag. Comparison with evolutionary tracks of Maeder and Meynet (1980) indicates that WRA 751 is located in the region of luminous blue variables at a lower limit of the initial mass of about 50 solar masses. Its other physical characteristics, such as the light variability, strong Fe II lines, and the extinction-free spectral energy distribution, suggest that WRA 751 is a candidate for a new luminous blue variable.

Compact reflection nebulae, a transit phase of evolution from post-AGB to planetary nebulae

In a search of the optical counter-part of candidates of protoplanetary nebulae on the plates of UK Schmidt, ESO Schmidt, and POSS, five compact reflection nebulae associated with post-AGB stars were found. A simplified model (dust shell is spherical symmetric, expansion velocity of dust shell is constant, Q(sub sca)(lambda) is isotropic, and the dust grain properties are uniform) is used to estimate the visible condition of the dust shell due to the scattering of the core star's light. Under certain conditions the compact reflection nebulae can be seen of the POSS or ESO/SRC survey plates.
