Na 4 Fe 1.5 Mn 1.5 (PO 4 ) 2 (P 2 O 7 ): A low-cost and earth-abundant cathode for robust sodium storage

The mixed compounds of phosphates and pyrophosphates are attractive cathodes for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) owing to their robust open framework structure and superior diffusion dynamics. However, most reported mixed phosphate cathodes generally suffer from low operating potential. Herein, we develop a bimetallic Na 4 Fe 1.5 Mn 1.5 (PO 4 ) 2 (P 2 O 7 )/C-rGO (NFMPP/C-rGO) cathode, which possesses two working plateaus at 2.92 and 3.95 V. The obtained NFMPP/C-rGO demonstrates a stable high capacity of over 120 mAh g −1 at 0.1 C. In-situ XRD characterization discloses a solid solution reaction for the Fe 2+/3+ redox couple and a two-phase reaction for the Mn 2+/3+ redox couple. In conclusion, first-principles calculations reveal the migration of Na + in NFMPP has low barriers. This work provides a new, low-cost, earth-abundant, and stable cathode choice for practical SIBs.

Moderate active Fe 3+ doping enables improved cationic and anionic redox reactions for wide-voltage-range sodium storage

Layered metal oxides are promising cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) due to their high theoretical specific capacity and wide Na + diffusion channels. However, the irreversible phase transitions and cationic/anionic redoxes cause fast capacity decay. Herein, P2-type Na 0.67 Mg 0.1 Mn 0.8 Fe 0.1 O 2 (NMMF-1) cathode material with moderate active Fe 3+ doping has been designed for sodium storage. Uneven Mn 3+ /Mn 4+ distribution is observed in NMMF-1 and the introduction of Fe 3+ is beneficial for reducing the Mn 3+ contents both at the surface and in the bulk to alleviate the Jahn–Teller effect. The moderate Fe 3+ /Fe 4+ redox can realize the best tradeoff between capacity and cyclability. Therefore, the NMMF-1 demonstrates a high capacity (174.7 mAh g -1 at 20 mA g -1 ) and improved cyclability (78.5% over 100 cycles) in a wide-voltage range of 1.5–4.5 V (vs. Na + /Na). In-situ X-ray diffraction reveals a complete solid-solution reaction with a small volume change of 1.7% during charge/discharge processes and the charge compensation is disclosed in detail. This study will provide new insights into designing high-capacity and stable layered oxide cathode materials for SIBs.

Induction and Stabilization of Columnar Mesophases in Fluorinated Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons by Arene‐Perfluoroarene Interactions

Abstract The straightforward synthesis of several Fluorinated Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons by the efficient, transition‐metal‐free, arene fluorine nucleophilic substitution reaction is described, and the full investigation of their liquid crystalline and optical properties reported. The key precursors for this study, i. e. 2,2’‐dilithio‐4,4′,5,5′‐tetraalkoxy‐1,1’‐biphenyl derivatives, were obtained in two steps from the highly selective Scholl oxidative homo‐coupling of 3,4‐dialkoxy‐1‐bromobenzene, followed by quantitative double‐lithiation. In situ room temperature nucleophilic annulation with either perfluorobenzene or perfluoronaphthalene leads to 1,2,3,4‐tetrafluoro‐6,7,10,11‐tetraalkxoytriphenylenes and 9,10,11,12,13,14‐hexafluoro‐2,3,6,7‐tetraalkoxybenzo[f]tetraphenes, respectively, in good yields. Exploiting the same strategy, subsequent double annulations resulted in the formation of 9,18‐difluoro‐2,3,6,7,11,12,15,16‐octa(alkoxy)tribenzo[f,k,m]tetraphenes and 9,10,19,20‐tetrafluoro‐2,3,6,7,12,13,16,17‐octakis(hexyloxy)tetrabenzo[a,c,j,l]tetracenes, respectively. Despite the presence of only four alkoxy chains, the polar “Janus” mesogens display a columnar hexagonal mesophase over broad temperature ranges, with higher mesophase stability than the archetypical 2,3,6,7,10,11‐hexa(alkoxy)triphenylenes and their hydrogenated counterparts. The improvement or induction of mesomorphism is attributed to efficient antiparallel face‐to‐face π‐stacking driven by the establishment of non‐covalent perfluoroarene‐arene intermolecular interactions. The larger lipophilic discotic π‐extended compounds also exhibit columnar mesomorphism, over similar temperature ranges and stability than their hydrogenated homologs. Finally, these fluorinated molecules form stringy gels in various solvents, and show interesting solvatochromic emission properties in solution as well as strong emission in thin films and gels.

Comprehensively Strengthened Metal‐Oxygen Bonds for Reversible Anionic Redox Reaction

Introducing anionic redox in layered oxides is an effective approach to breaking the capacity limit of conventional cationic redox. However, the anionic redox reaction generally suffers from excessive oxidation of lattice oxygen to O 2 and O 2 release, resulting in local structural deterioration and rapid capacity/voltage decay. Here, a Na 0.71 Li 0.22 Al 0.05 Mn 0.73 O 2 (NLAM) cathode material is developed by introducing Al 3+ into the transition metal (TM) sites. Thanks to the strong Al–O bonding strength and small Al 3+ radius, the TMO 2 skeleton and the holistic TM–O bonds in NLAM are comprehensively strengthened, which inhibits the excessive lattice oxygen oxidation. The obtained NLAM exhibits a high reversible capacity of 194.4 mAh g —1 at 20 mA g —1 and decent cyclability with 98.6% capacity retention over 200 cycles at 200 mA g —1 . In situ characterizations reveal that the NLAM experiences phase transitions with an intermediate OP4 phase during the charge–discharge. Theoretical calculations further confirm that the Al substitution strategy is beneficial for improving the overlap between Mn 3d and O 2p orbitals. Importantly, this finding sheds light on the design of layered oxide cathodes with highly reversible anionic redox for sodium storage.

Water-Pillared Sodium Vanadium Bronze Nanowires for Enhanced Rechargeable Magnesium Ion Storage

Owing to the advantages of high safety, low cost, high theoretical volumetric capacities, and environmental friendliness, magnesium-ion batteries (MIBs) have more feasibility for large-scale energy storage compared to lithium-ion batteries. However, lack of suitable cathode materials due to sluggish kinetics of magnesium ion is one of the biggest challenges. Herein, water-pillared sodium vanadium bronze nanowires (Na 2 V 6 O 16 ·1.63H 2 O) are reported as cathode material for MIBs, which display high performance in magnesium storage. The hydrated sodium ions provide excellent structural stability. The charge shielding effect of lattice water enables fast Mg 2+ diffusion. It exhibits high specific capacity of 175 mAh g -1 , long cycle life (450 cycles), and high coulombic efficiency (≈100%). At high current density of 200 mA g -1 , the capacity retention is up to 71% even after 450 cycles (compared to the highest capacity), demonstrating excellent long-term cycling performance. The nature of charge storage kinetics is explored. Furthermore, a highly reversible structure change during the electrochemical process is proved by comprehensive electrochemical analysis. The remarkable electrochemical performance makes Na 2 V 6 O 16 ·1.63H 2 O a promising cathode material for low-cost and safe MIBs.

Sedimentation of ballasted cells-free EPS in meromictic Fayetteville Green Lake

Fayetteville Green Lake (FGL) is a recognized, extensively studied present-day model of the stratified Proterozoic Ocean. Nonetheless, biomass sedimentation in FGL remains hard to explain: Whilst virtually all sediment pigments belong to photosynthetic sulfur bacteria (PSB) from a chemocline, the isotopic carbon signature of the bulk biomass suggests its epilimnetic phytoplankton origin. Here we present experimental evidence that FGL Synechococci produce copious extracellular polysacchrides (EPS), which become impregnated with Ca, Mg and Na cations and are release to the environment as ballasted cell coverings. We propose that sedimentation of these cell-free EPS can constitute the bulk of pigment-less organic material in FGL sediment. Because increased availability of inorganic carbon (Ci) stimulates accumulation of ballasted EPS, we propose the universal role of cyanobacterial EPS in biomass sedimentation in the high-Ci Paleoproterozoic Ocean as well as in modern aquatic systems like FGL.
