Conventional single-gap $s-$wave superconductivity and hidden peak effect in single crystals of Mo$_8$Ga$_{41}$ superconductor

London and Campbell penetration depths were measured in single crystals of the endohedral gallide cluster superconductor, Mo _8 8 Ga _41 41 . The full temperature range superfluid density, \rho_s(T) ρ s ( T ) , is consistent with the clean isotropic s- s − wave weak-coupling BCS theory without any signs of the second gap or strong coupling. The temperature dependence of the Campbell length is hysteretic between zero-field cooling (ZFC) and field-cooling (FC) protocols, indicating an anharmonic vortex pinning potential. The field dependence of the effective critical current density, j_{c}(H) j c ( H ) , reveals an unusual result. While in the ZFC protocol, j_{c}(H) j c ( H ) is monotonically suppressed by the magnetic field, it exhibits a profound “hidden” peak effect in the FC protocol, that is, without a vortex density gradient. We suggest a possible novel mechanism for such a peak effect, which involves both static and dynamic aspects of vortex pinning.

Coexistence of Dirac fermion and charge density wave in the square-net-based semimetal LaAuSb 2

Here, we report a comprehensive study of magnetotransport properties, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), and density functional theory (DFT) calculations on self-flux grown LaAuSb 2 single crystals. Resistivity and Hall measurements reveal a charge density wave (CDW) transition at 77 K. MR and de Haas-Van Alphen (dHvA) measurements indicate that the transport properties of LaAuSb 2 are dominated by Dirac fermions that arise from Sb square nets. ARPES measurements and DFT calculations reveal an electronic structure with a common feature of the square-net-based topological semimetals, which is in good agreement with the magnetotransport properties. Our results indicate the coexistence of CDW and Dirac fermion in LaAuSb 2 , both of which are linked to the bands arising from the Sb-square net, suggesting that the square net could serve as a structural motif to explore various electronic orders.

Electronic transport and thermoelectricity in the selenospinel Cu 6—x Fe 4+x Sn 12 Se 32

Here, we report a study of selenospinel Cu 6—x Fe 4+x Sn 12 Se 32 (x = 0, 1, 2) single crystals, which crystallize in a cubic structure with the F$d$$\overline{3}$$m$ space group, and show typical semiconducting behavior. The large discrepancy between the activation energy for electrical conductivity E ρ (32.3–69.8 meV), and for thermopower E S (3.2–11.5 meV), indicates a polaronic transport mechanism between 350 and 50 K. With decreasing temperature, it evolves into variable-range hopping conduction. Furthermore, the heat capacity shows a hump around 25(5) K and diverges from the Debye T 3 law at low temperatures, indicating the observation of structural glassy features in these crystalline solids.

Coupling of magnetism and Dirac fermions in YbMnSb 2

Here, we report inelastic neutron scattering measurements of magnetic excitations in YbMnSb 2 , a low-carrier-density Dirac semimetal in which the antiferromagnetic Mn layers are interleaved with Sb layers that host Dirac fermions. We observe a measurable broadening of spin waves, which is consistent with substantial spin-fermion coupling. The spin-wave damping γ in YbMnSb 2 is roughly twice larger compared to that in a sister material, YbMnBi 2 , where an indication of a small damping consistent with a theoretical analysis of the spin-fermion coupling was reported. The interplane interaction between the Mn layers in YbMnSb 2 is also much stronger, suggesting that the interaction mechanism is rooted in the same spin-fermion coupling. Our results establish the systematics of spin-fermion interactions in layered magnetic Dirac materials.

Robust three-dimensional type-II Dirac semimetal state in SrAgBi

Topological semimetals such as Dirac, Weyl or nodal line semimetals are widely studied for their peculiar properties including high Fermi velocities, small effective masses and high magnetoresistance. When the Dirac cone is tilted, exotic phenomena could emerge whereas materials hosting such states are promising for photonics and plasmonics applications. Here we present evidence that SrAgBi is a spin-orbit coupling-induced type-II three-dimensional Dirac semimetal featuring tilted Dirac cone at the Fermi energy. Near charge compensation and Fermi surface characteristics are not much perturbed by 7% of vacancy defects on the Ag atomic site, suggesting that SrAgBi could be a material of interest for observation of robust optical and spintronic topological quantum phenomena.

Topological Hall Effect Anisotropy in Kagome Bilayer Metal Fe 3 Sn 2

Kagome lattice materials attract growing interest for their topological properties and flat-bands in electronic structure. We present comprehensive study on the anisotropy and out-of-plane electric transport in Fe 3 Sn 2 , a metal with bilayer of Fe kagome planes and with massive Dirac fermions that features high-temperature non-collinear magnetic structure and magnetic skyrmions. For the electrical current path along the c-axis, in micron-size crystals, we found a large topological Hall effect (THE) over a wide temperature range down to spin-glass state. Twofold and fourfold angular magnetoresistance are observed for different magnetic phases, reflecting the competition of magnetic interactions and magnetic anisotropy in kagome lattice that preserve robust topological Hall effect for inter kagomebilayer currents. This information provides new insight into the anisotropy in Fe 3 Sn 2 , of interest in skyrmionicbubble application-related micron-size devices.

Thermal transport properties of IrSbSe

Here we report a thermal transport study of IrSbSe, which crystallizes in a noncentrosymmetric cubic structure with the P2 1 3 space group and shows a narrow-gap semiconducting behavior. The large discrepancy between the activation energy for conductivity [E ρ = 128(2) meV] and for thermopower [E S = 17.7 (9) meV] from 200 to 300 K indicates a polaronic transport mechanism. The electrical resistivity varies as exp (T 0 /T) 1/4 and thermopower varies as T 1/2 at low temperatures, indicating that it evolves into Mott variable-range hopping dominant conduction with decreasing temperature. IrSbSe shows a relatively low value of thermal conductivity (~1.65 W/Km) and thermopower of about 0.24 mV/K around 100 K, yet poor electrical conductivity. On the other hand, a high vacancy defect concentration on both Ir and Sb atomic sites of up to 15% suggests a high defect tolerance and points to the possibility of a future improvement of carrier density by chemical substitution or defect optimization.

Enhanced superconductivity and electron correlations in intercalated ZrTe 3

We report charge density waves (CDWs) with superconductivity, competing Fermi surface instabilities, and collective orders have captured much interest in two-dimensional van der Waals (vdW) materials. Understanding the CDW suppression mechanism, its connection to the emerging superconducting state, and electronic correlations provides opportunities for engineering the electronic properties of vdW heterostructures and thin-film devices. Using a combination of the thermal transport, x-ray photoemission spectroscopy, Raman measurements, and first-principles calculations, we observe an increase in electronic correlations of the conducting states as the CDW is suppressed in ZrT e3 with 5% Cu and Ni intercalation in the vdW gap. As superconductivity emerges, intercalation brings not only decoupling of quasi-one-dimensional conduction electrons with phonons as a consequence of intercalation-induced lattice expansion but also a drastic increase in Zr 2+ at the expense of Zr 4+ metal atoms. These observations not only demonstrate the potential of atomic intercalates in the vdW gap for ground-state tuning but also illustrate the crucial role of the Zr metal valence in the formation of collective electronic orders.

Giant Thermoelectric Power Factor Anisotropy in PtSb 1.4 Sn 0.6

In this work, we report on the giant anisotropy found in the thermoelectric power factor (S 2 σ) of marcasite structure-type PtSb 1.4 Sn 0.6 single crystal. PtSb 1.4 Sn 0.6 , synthesized using an ambient pressure flux growth method upon mixing Sb and Sn on the same atomic site, is a new phase different from both PtSb 2 and PtSn 2 , which crystallize in the cubic Pa$\bar{3}$ pyrite and Fm$\bar{3}$m fluorite unit cell symmetry, respectively. The large difference in S 2 σ for heat flow applied along different principal directions of the orthorhombic unit cell stems mostly from anisotropic Seebeck coefficients.

Short-Range Crystalline Order-Tuned Conductivity in Cr 2 Si 2 Te 6 van der Waals Magnetic Crystals

Two-dimensional magnetic materials (2DMMs) are significant not only for studies on the nature of 2D long-range magnetic order but also for future spintronic devices. Of particular interest are 2DMMs where spins can be manipulated by electrical conduction. Whereas Cr 2 Si 2 Te 6 exhibits magnetic order in few-layer crystals, its large band gap inhibits electronic conduction. Here we show that the defect-induced short-range crystal order in Cr 2 Si 2 Te 6 , on the length scale below 0.6 nm, induces a substantially reduced band gap and robust semiconducting behavior down to 2 K that turns to metallic above 10 GPa. Our results in this work will be helpful in designing conducting states in 2DMMs and call for spin-resolved measurement of the electronic structure in exfoliated ultrathin crystals.

Polaronic Conductivity in Cr 2 Ge 2 Te 6 Single Crystals

We report that intrinsic 2D ferromagnetic semiconductors are an important class of materials for spin-charge conversion applications. Cr 2 Ge 2 Te 6 retains long-range magnetic order in the bilayer at cryogenic temperatures and shows complex magnetic interactions with considerable magnetic anisotropy. Here, a series of structural, magnetic, X-ray scattering, electronic, thermal transport and first-principles calculation studies are performed, which reveal that localized electronic charge carriers in Cr 2 Ge 2 Te 6 are dressed by the surrounding lattice and are involved in polaronic transport via hopping that is observed via magnetocrystalline anisotropy. This opens the possibility for manipulation of charge transport in Cr 2 Ge 2 Te 6 —based devices by electron–phonon- and spin–orbit coupling-based tailoring of polaron properties.

Thermal transport and mixed valence in ZrTe3 doped with Hf and Se

Two-dimensional transition metal trichalcogenides (TMTCs) feature covalently bonded metal-chalcogen layers separated by the van der Waals (vdW) gap. Similar to transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs), TMTCs often host charge density waves (CDWs) and superconductivity, but unlike TMDCs, atomic chains in the crystal structure give rise to quasi one-dimensional (quasi 1D) conduction. ZrTe3 features the CDW below TCDW = 63 K and filamentary superconductivity below 2 K that can be enhanced by pressure or chemical substitution. Here, we report the presence of mixed valent Zr2+ and Zr4+ atoms in ZrTe3 crystals that are reduced by doping in ZrTe3−xSex and Zr1−yHfyTe3. Superconductivity is enhanced via disorder in Te2-Te3 atomic chains that are associated with CDW formation. Hf substitution on the Zr atomic site enhances TCDW due to unperturbed Te2-Te3 chain periodicity and enhanced electron-phonon coupling. Weak electronic correlations in ZrTe3−xSex are likely governed by the lattice contraction effects.

A tunable band gap of the layered semiconductor Zn 3 In 2 S 6 under pressure

The band gap is an important property of a semiconductor, and a candidate material with a highly tunable band gap under external tuning parameters will offer wider applications in optoelectronic devices and photocatalytic fields. Here, we show that the layered semiconductor Zn 3 In 2 S 6 possesses a band gap that is highly tunable with pressure. In situ optical absorption shows that the band gap unexpectedly widens with pressure up to ~13 GPa. Sudden gap narrowing then occurs above 14 GPa, which is followed by progressive gap decreases on further compression and the gap finally closes above 20 GPa. Our study, encompassing X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy experiments and theoretical calculations revealed that the selective responses of the different bonds are responsible for the band gap increase in the low-pressure ranges. We show that the pressure-induced irreversible amorphization is responsible for the sudden gap narrowing whereas the semiconductor–metallic transition is related to the amorphous–amorphous transition at high-pressure due to a change in the local coordination number of Zn atoms. This work demonstrates the high tunability of the electronic and optical properties of layered ternary semiconductors under pressure, providing a potential way for wider applications of this class of materials.

Polaronic transport and thermoelectricity in Mn 3 Si 2 Te 6 single crystals

Here, we carried out a comprehensive study of the structural, electrical transport, thermal, and thermodynamic properties in ferrimagnetic Mn 3 Si 2 Te 6 single crystals. Mn and Te K -edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy and synchrotron powder x-ray diffraction were measured to provide information on the local atomic environment and the average crystal structure. The dc and ac magnetic susceptibility measurements indicate a second-order paramagnetic to ferrimagnetic transition at T c ~ 74 K, which is further confirmed by the specific heat measurement. Mn 3 Si 2 Te 6 exhibits semiconducting behavior along with a large negative magnetoresistance of -87% at T c and a relatively high value of thermopower up to ~10 mV/K at 5 K. Besides the rapidly increasing resistivity ρ(T) and thermopower S(T) below 20 K, the large discrepancy between the activation energy for resistivity E ρ and thermopower E S above 20 K indicates the polaronic transport mechanism. Furthermore, the thermal conductivity κ(T) of Mn 3 Si 2 Te 6 is notably rather low, comparable to Cr 2 Si 2 Te 6 , and is strongly suppressed in the magnetic field across T c , indicating the presence of strong spin-lattice coupling, also similar with Cr 2 Si 2 Te 6 .

Three-dimensional ferromagnetism and magnetotransport in van der Waals Mn-intercalated tantalum disufide

Van der Waals (vdW) ferromagnets are an important class of materials for spintronics applications. The recent discovery of atomically vdW magnets CrI 3 and Cr 2 Ge 2 Te 6 has triggered a renaissance in the area of two-dimensional (2D) magnetism. Herein we systematically studied 2H-Mn 0.28 TaS 2 single crystal, a 2D vdW ferromagnet with T c ~ 82.3K, and a large in-plane magnetic anisotropy. Mn K-edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy was measured to provide information on its electronic state and local atomic environment. The detailed magnetic isotherms measured in the vicinity of T c indicates that the spin coupling inside 2H-Mn 0.28 TaS 2 is of a 3D Heisenberg type coupled with the attractive long-range interaction between spins that decay as J(r) ≈ r –4.85 . Both resistivity ρ(T) and thermopower S(T) exhibit anomalies near T c , confirming that the hole-type transport carriers strongly interact with local moments. Furthermore, an unusual angle-dependent magnetoresistance is further observed, suggesting a possible field-induced novel magnetic structure.
