Vibrational relaxation dynamics in layered perovskite quantum wells

Significance Halide perovskites, especially layered perovskites, offer a number of advantages to creating bright and efficient light-emitting devices and other optoelectronic applications. The organic–inorganic hybrid layered perovskite features complex lattice dynamics due to the ionic character of the crystal and the softness arising from noncovalent bonds between molecular moieties and the inorganic network. Especially, the packing geometry of the organic barriers leads to a structural deformation of inorganic octahedral, which strongly affects the properties that are crucial for device applications. In this work, we use high-resolution resonant impulsive stimulated Raman spectroscopy of a variety of ligand substitutions in layered perovskites. We find the composition of organic ligands can substantially change the dephasing rate of optical phonons and their temperature dependence, due to varying degrees of anharmonicity in the lattice and dynamic structural disorder.

Lead-free Cesium Europium Halide Perovskite Nanocrystals

Because of the toxicity of lead, searching for a lead-free halide perovskite semiconducting material with comparable optical and electronic properties is of great interest. Rare-earth-based halide perovskite represents a promising class of materials for this purpose. In this work, we demonstrate the solution-phase synthesis of single-crystalline CsEuCl 3 nanocrystals with a uniform size distribution centered around 15 nm. The CsEuCl 3 nanocrystals have photoluminescence emission centered at 435 nm, with a full width at half-maximum of 19 nm. Furthermore, CsEuCl 3 nanocrystals can be embedded in a polymer matrix that provides enhanced stability under continuous laser irradiation. Lead-free rare-earth cesium europium halide perovskite nanocrystals represent a promising candidate to replace lead halide perovskites.

Effect of Anisotropic Confinement on Electronic Structure and Dynamics of Band Edge Excitons in Inorganic Perovskite Nanowires

Inorganic lead halide perovskite nanostructures show promise as the active layers in photovoltaics, light emitting diodes, and other optoelectronic devices. They are robust in the presence of oxygen and water, and the electronic structure and dynamics of these nanostructures can be tuned through quantum confinement. Here we create aligned bundles of CsPbBr3 nanowires with widths resulting in quantum confinement of the electronic wave functions and subject them to ultrafast microscopy. We directly image rapid one-dimensional exciton diffusion along the nanowires, and we measure an exciton trap density of roughly one per nanowire. Using transient absorption microscopy, we observe a polarization-dependent splitting of the band edge exciton line, and from the polarized fluorescence of nanowires in solution, we determine that the exciton transition dipole moments are anisotropic in strength. Furthermore, our observations are consistent with a model in which splitting is driven by shape anisotropy in conjunction with long-range exchange.
