Li 8 MnO 6 : A Novel Cathode Material with Only Anionic Redox

In Li-excess transition-metal-oxide cathode materials, anionic oxygen redox can offer high capacity and high voltages, although peroxo and superoxo species may cause oxygen loss, poor cycling performance, and capacity fading. Previous work showed that undesirable formation of peroxide and superoxide bonds is controlled to some extent by Mn substitution, and the present work uses density functional calculations to examine the reasons for this by studying the anionic redox mechanism Li 8 MnO 6 . This material is obtained by substituting Mn for Sn in Li 8 SnO 6 or for Zr in Li 8 ZrO 6 , and we also compare to previous work on those materials. The calculations predict that Li 8 MnO 6 is stable at room temperature (with a band gap of 3.19 eV as calculated HSE06 and 1.82 eV as calculated with the less reliable with PBE+U), and they elucidate the chemical and structural effects involved in the inhibition of oxygen release in this cathode. Throughout the whole delithiation process, only O 2- ions are oxidized. The directional Mn-O bonds formed from unfilled 3d orbitals effectively inhibit the formation of O-O bonds, and the layered structure is maintained even after removing 3 Li per Li 8 MnO 6 formula unit. The calculated average voltage for removal of 3 Li is 3.69 V by HSE06, and the corresponding capacity is 389 mAh/g. The high voltage of oxygen anionic redox and the high capacity result in a high energy density of 1436 Wh/kg. The Li-ion diffusion barrier for the dominant interlayer diffusion path along the c-axis is 0.57 eV by PBE+U. Finally, these results help us to understand the oxygen redox mechanism in a new lithium-rich Li 8 MnO 6 cathode material and contribute to the design of high-energy-density lithium-ion-battery cathode materials with favorable electrochemical properties based on anionic oxygen redox.

UiO-66 Metal–Organic Framework as an Anode for a Potassium-Ion Battery: Quantum Mechanical Analysis

The natural abundance of potassium in the earth’s crust is 1000 times higher than that of lithium, so energy technologies built on potassium are more sustainable. Potassium-ion batteries have attracted considerable attention because of their relatively low cost and high operating potential, but questions remain about the best anode material for such batteries. Here, in this paper, we report first-principles computations based on density functional theory to investigate the performance of the UiO-66 metal–organic framework as an anode material for potassium-ion batteries; the goal is to provide a fundamental understanding of metal–organic framework (MOF)-based electrodes to guide the design and development of high-performance potassium-ion batteries. Our study includes the stability and electronic properties of potassiated structures and the mechanisms of potassium intercalation and diffusion in the framework. The results indicate that UiO-66 has a maximum specific capacity of 644 mAh/g as the anode of a potassium-ion battery. During potassiation, we observe charge transfer from potassium to carbon or oxygen of UiO-66 near the intercalated K. During K diffusion, the K migrates along the UiO-66 framework with a maximal migration energy barrier of 0.377 eV in the optimal pathway, which is much lower than the barriers for Li and Na diffusion in UiO-66. The diffusion coefficient of K in the anode is several orders of magnitude larger than those of Li and Na. This favors potassium ions over lithium ions or sodium ions when UiO-66 is the anode.

Anionic Oxygen Redox in the High-Lithium Material Li 8 SnO 6

Lithiated transition metal oxide cathode materials that combine oxygen-anion redox [O 2 – /(O 2 ) n– ] with cation redox offer substantial capacities and higher voltage than cathodes without oxygen redox, but oxygen-anion redox is usually accompanied by the formation of peroxo or superoxo species that may cause oxygen release. To clarify the relationship between the oxygen release and peroxide and superoxide dimers without the complication of transition-metal redox, we performed density functional theory calculations to study the layered Li 8 SnO 6 cathode because it has only oxygen-anion redox during delithiation. Features with O–O distances of ~1.5 Å (corresponding to the formation of a peroxide) were observed at 75% lithium concentration, and further delithiation to 62.5% lithium concentration shortened the O–O bond distance to ~1.3 Å (corresponding to the formation of superoxide). The solely anionic oxygen redox stabilizes the delithiated structure of Li 8–x SnO 6 , and it does not cause structural disorder or release oxygen gas. Ab initio molecular dynamics calculations in the supercell at 300 K indicate that oxygen dimerization may occur at 75% lithium concentration. On the (0001) surface with a high lithium concentration (98%), oxygen dimerization is unfavorable. The calculations by HSE06 show that oxygen redox in Li 8 SnO 6 offers an initial voltage (vs Li/Li + ) greater than 4.2 V. The GGA+U calculations indicate that the Li + -polaron in Li 95 Sn 12 O 72 migrates with a migration barrier of only 0.43 eV. Here, this work also quantifies a solely anionic oxygen redox mechanism in Li 8 SnO 6 , and it provides a deeper understanding of anionic oxygen redox in Li-excess oxide cathode materials.
