Temperature dependence of corrosion behavior of a dual-phase Fe 50 Mn 30 Co 10 Cr 10 high entropy alloy in supercritical water at 380–650 °C

Corrosion behavior of a dual-phase Fe 50 Mn 30 Co 10 Cr 10 HEA subjected to supercritical water at different temperatures was investigated. Both weight gain and oxide film thickness increased with increasing temperatures. An outer layer with polyhedral MnFe 2 O 4 particles and an inner layer containing a mixture of CrMn 1.5 O 4 and Fe 3 O 4 were formed at 380 °C. Mn 2 O 3 outer and CrMn 1.5 O 4 inner layers developed at 550 and 650 °C, but the loose granular Mn 2 O 3 particles at 550 °C transformed into a compact oxide film at 650 °C. Besides, Cr 2 O 3 oxide particles were observed along the grain boundaries. Finally, the corrosion mechanism at different temperatures was also discussed.

Revealing the corrosion mechanism of an Al 0.1 CoCrFeNi high entropy alloy in high temperature carbon dioxide environment

The corrosion behavior of an Al 0.1 CoCrFeNi HEA in high temperature CO 2 at 850 °C for different exposure periods was investigated using different characterization methods. Further, weight gain increased with extended exposure periods, yet it remained lower than most conventional alloys. A double-layer oxide film consisting of Cr 2 O 3 and Al 2 O 3 formed after 100 and 500 h of exposure, while a single layer of Cr 2 O 3 developed after 1000 h of exposure. CoCrFeNi particles with an FCC structure were embedded in the oxide films irrespective of the exposure periods. Moreover, a transition zone containing numerous striped-like Al 2 O 3 oxides along the grain boundaries was developed underneath the oxide films.

Two–Photon Printing of Base–Catalyzed Resins Involving Thiol–Michael Network Formation

Two-photon printing is accomplished using a photobase generator, 2-(2-nitrophenyl)-propyloxycarbony tetramethyl guanidine, to locally catalyze thiol-ene coupling between multifunctional monomers while mitigating chain-growth polymerization with free radical scavengers. Microstructures printed from base-catalyzed resins exhibit higher resolution (linewidths < 400 nm) and lower print error (<3%) than analogous microstructures printed using a photosensitive, free radical initiator. Further, Raman spectroscopy reveals that resins polymerized using the photobase generator in the presence of free radical scavengers exhibit higher selectivity of thiol-ene coupling over radical polymerization, resulting in stiffer, more uniform polymer networks. The base-catalyzed resins are capable of producing 3D microstructures printed with high accuracy and minimal post-processing defects. As a result, a direct comparison between free radical and base-initiated resins highlights the need for mindful consideration of how chemical reaction pathway influences printability and network end-properties when designing resins.

Spatiotemporal Reaction Dynamics Control in Two‐Photon Polymerization for Enhancing Writing Characteristics

Since 2001, 3D microfabrication based on two‐photon polymerization (TPP) has drawn extensive attention and interest in biology, optics, photonics, material science, and high‐energy physics. The in‐volume fabrication capability due to the threshold behavior of two‐photon absorption enables TPP higher flexibility compared with other nanofabrication techniques. However, as determined by the in‐volume fabrication feature as well as various reaction dynamics, the writing characteristics of TPP, such as throughput, accuracy, surface quality, and fabrication capability, are still limited. Herein, a comprehensive study is performed on the spatiotemporal behavior of reaction dynamics during TPP fabrication, mainly focusing on spatiotemporal characteristics of radical diffusion, photothermal effect, microscale mechanics, and voxel stacking process. Based on the study, a nonsequential fabrication method is established to simultaneously improve key writing characteristics of TPP and realize sharp features, high speeds, large overhang structure, and smooth surfaces. The method established in this work can be applied to improve the performance of functional devices for various fields.

Nanofabrication and inspection of fuel capsules for inertial confinement fusion

3D nanofabrication via Two-Photon Polymerization (TPP) provides a unique capability of flexibly fabricating complex structures over 1D-3D dimensions and µm-cm scales with resolutions below 100 nm. In the past years, the Laser-Assisted Nano Engineering (LANE) Group at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) has been working closely with the Laboratory of Laser Energetics (LLE) in developing practical TPP approaches to fabricating various target structures for Inertial Confinement Fusion (ICF). At the same time, fuel capsules for ICF experiments should be inspected for surface and wall-embedded defects. Plastics materials [e.g., for example polystyrene (PS)] are the common materials used to make fuel capsules. However, during their manufacturing, capsules usually contain defects (vacuoles) embedded inside the shell walls, which may distort the implosion processes and influence the ICF performance of the capsules. The size of vacuoles is usually in a range from 100 to 2000 nm. Coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) microscope offers the capabilities of inspecting and characterizing the capsule defects. Furthermore, cryo-CARS microscopy was developed to explore how fuel isotope distributed inside target when icing that could not be diagnosed before.

Effect of exposure temperature on the corrosion behavior of a FeNiCrCuAl high entropy alloy in supercritical water

The corrosion behavior of a FeNiCrCuAl high entropy alloy exposed to supercritical water at 380–650 °C and 25 MPa was investigated. The weight gain exhibited a nearly parabolic kinetics. At 380 °C, Al 2 O 3 precipitated on Fe 3 O 4 particles in FeCr-rich regions and intensified as the temperature increased to 650 °C, eventually resulting in an Al 2 O 3 particle. A mixed Fe 3 O 4 and NiAl 2 O 4 outer layer developed on NiAl-rich regions at 380 °C, whereas an Al 2 O 3 layer formed at 650 °C. Cu 2 O formed along the boundaries of NiAl-rich regions, regardless of exposure temperatures. In conclusion, the corrosion mechanism at different temperatures was elucidated.

A net-zero emissions strategy for China’s power sector using carbon-capture utilization and storage

Decarbonized power systems are critical to mitigate climate change, yet methods to achieve a reliable and resilient near-zero power system are still under exploration. This study develops an hourly power system simulation model considering high-resolution geological constraints for carbon-capture-utilization-and-storage to explore the optimal solution for a reliable and resilient near-zero power system. This is applied to 31 provinces in China by simulating 10,450 scenarios combining different electricity storage durations and interprovincial transmission capacities, with various shares of abated fossil power with carbon-capture-utilization-and-storage. Here, we show that allowing up to 20% abated fossil fuel power generation in the power system could reduce the national total power shortage rate by up to 9.0 percentages in 2050 compared with a zero fossil fuel system. A lowest-cost scenario with 16% abated fossil fuel power generation in the system even causes 2.5% lower investment costs in the network (or $16.8 billion), and also increases system resilience by reducing power shortage during extreme climatic events.

Global drivers of avian haemosporidian infections vary across zoogeographical regions

Macroecological analyses provide valuable insights into factors that influence how parasites are distributed across space and among hosts. Amid large uncertainties that arise when generalizing from local and regional findings, hierarchical approaches applied to global datasets are required to determine whether drivers of parasite infection patterns vary across scales. Here we assessed global patterns of haemosporidian infections across a broad diversity of avian host clades and zoogeographical realms to depict hotspots of prevalence and to identify possible underlying drivers.
