Status and new features of the topography beamline 1-BM after the Advanced Photon Source upgrade

The beamline 1-BM of the Advanced Photon Source (APS), a bending-magnet beamline with an effective X-ray beam size of ~100×4 mm2, has relatively comprehensive synchrotron topography and rocking curve imaging capabilities for characterization of crystals (particularly wide-bandgap semiconductors SiC, AlN, GaN, Ga2O3 etc). It is equipped with a white-beam topography stage for imaging large wafers up to 8 inches. It also has a double-crystal setup, of which the second stage can be used for monochromatic-beam topography. The first stage has different beam conditioners in the grazing-incidence geometry that can expand the vertical beam size from 4 to ~100 mm for double-crystal rocking curve imaging when it is combined with the second stage. Recently APS has been upgraded to a modern 4th-generation light source, and 1-BM has been recommissioned to its normal operation for general users with better performance. The upgraded APS leads to new features at 1-BM. The much smaller source size and higher X-ray coherence significantly improve the image resolution and contrast. The higher flux and brightness of the new source reduce exposure time, which mitigates the mechanical drifting and vibration issues. Here the main capabilities and status of 1-BM together with these new features are introduced.

Multiple-polarization-sensitive photodetector based on a perovskite metasurface

Most polarization-sensitive photodetectors detect either linearly polarized (LP) or circularly polarized (CP) light. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a multiple-polarization photodetector based on a hybrid organic–inorganic perovskite (HOIP) metasurface, which is sensitive to both LP and CP light simultaneously. The perovskite metasurface is composed of a HOIP antenna array on a single-crystal HOIP film. Owing to the antenna anisotropy, the absorption of linearly polarized light at the metasurface depends on the polarization angle; also, due to the mirror asymmetry of the antenna elements, the metasurface is also sensitive to different circular polarizations. Polarization-dependent photocurrent responses to both LP and CP light are detected. Our results highlight the potential of perovskite metasurfaces for integrated photoelectric applications.

Magnon-spinon dichotomy in the Kitaev hyperhoneycomb β-Li 2 IrO 3

The family of edge-sharing tricoordinated iridates and ruthenates has emerged in recent years as a major platform for Kitaev spin-liquid physics, where spins fractionalize into emergent magnetic fluxes and Majorana fermions with Dirac-like dispersions. While such exotic states are usually preempted by long-range magnetic order at low temperatures, signatures of Majorana fermions with long coherent times have been predicted to manifest at intermediate and higher energy scales, similar to the observation of spinons in quasi-one-dimensional spin chains. Here in this paper we present a resonant inelastic x-ray scattering study of the magnetic excitations of the hyperhoneycomb iridate β-Li 2 IrO 3 under a magnetic field with a record-high-resolution spectrometer. At low temperatures, dispersing spin waves can be resolved around the predicted intertwined incommensurate spiral and field-induced zigzag orders, whose excitation energy reaches a maximum of 16 meV. A 2 T magnetic field softens the dispersion around Q = 0. The behavior of the spin waves under magnetic field is consistent with our semiclassical calculations for the ground state and the dynamical spin structure factor, which further predicts that the ensued intertwined uniform states remain robust up to very high fields (100 T). Most saliently, the low-energy magnonlike mode is superimposed by a broad continuum of excitations, centered around 35 meV and extending up to 100 meV. This high-energy continuum survives up to at least 300 K—well above the ordering temperature of 38 K—and gives evidence for pairs of long-lived Majorana fermions of the proximate Kitaev spin liquid.

Bendable disordered metamaterials for broadband terahertz invisibility

We experimentally demonstrate a bendable cloaking structure composed of obliquely stacked planar metallic shells that individually enclose the objects to be hidden. The ensemble of shells acts as a disordered oblique grating capable of bending along a curved structure and exhibits broadband invisibility from 0.2 to 1.0 THz. Hiding cloaked objects sized hundreds of microns could prevent the detection of certain powders that are sensitive to terahertz waves; such a cloaking structure can also be considered as a shape-changing passageway that transfers the electromagnetic waves without interfering with them. Our approach provides a unique way to achieve broadband electromagnetic invisibility.
