Hidden non-collinear spin-order induced topological surface states

Abstract Rare-earth monopnictides are a family of materials simultaneously displaying complex magnetism, strong electronic correlation, and topological band structure. The recently discovered emergent arc-like surface states in these materials have been attributed to the multi-wave-vector antiferromagnetic order, yet the direct experimental evidence has been elusive. Here we report observation of non-collinear antiferromagnetic order with multiple modulations using spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy. Moreover, we discover a hidden spin-rotation transition of single-to-multiple modulations 2 K below the Néel temperature. The hidden transition coincides with the onset of the surface states splitting observed by our angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements. Single modulation gives rise to a band inversion with induced topological surface states in a local momentum region while the full Brillouin zone carries trivial topological indices, and multiple modulation further splits the surface bands via non-collinear spin tilting, as revealed by our calculations. The direct evidence of the non-collinear spin order in NdSb not only clarifies the mechanism of the emergent topological surface states, but also opens up a new paradigm of control and manipulation of band topology with magnetism.

Vapor transport growth of MnBi 2 Te 4 and related compounds

Motivated by fine tuning of the magnetic and topological properties of MnBi 2 Te 4 via defect engineering, in this work, we report the crystal growth of MnBi 2 Te 4 and related compounds using vapor transport method and crystal characterization by measuring elemental ratio, magnetic and transport properties, and scanning tunneling microscopy. For the growth of MnBi 2 Te 4 single crystals, I 2 , MnI 2 , MnCl 2 , TeCl 4 , and MoCl 5 are all effective transport agents; chemical transportation occurs faster in the presence of iodides than chlorides. We further successfully grow MnSb 2 Te 4 , MnBi 2-x Sb x Te 4 , and Sb-doped MnBi 4 Te 7 crystals. A small temperature gradient< 20°C between the hot and cold ends of the growth ampoule is critical for the successful crystal growth of MnBi 2 Te 4 and related compounds. Compared to flux grown crystals, vapor transported crystals tend to be Mn stoichiometric, and Sb-bearing compositions have more Mn/Sb site mixing. The vapor transport growth provides a new materials synthesis approach to fine tune the magnetic and topological properties of these intrinsic magnetic topological insulators where controlling defects is vital.

Site Mixing for Engineering Magnetic Topological Insulators

The van der Waals compound, MnBi 2 Te 4 , is the first intrinsic magnetic topological insulator, providing a materials platform for exploring exotic quantum phenomena such as the axion insulator state and the quantum anomalous Hall effect. However, intrinsic structural imperfections lead to bulk conductivity, and the roles of magnetic defects are still unknown. With higher concentrations of the same types of magnetic defects, the isostructural compound MnSb 2 Te 4 is a better model system for a systematic investigation of the connections among magnetism, topology, and lattice defects. In this work, the impact of antisite defects on the magnetism and electronic structure is studied in MnSb 2 Te 4 . Mn-Sb site mixing leads to complex magnetic structures and tunes the interlayer magnetic coupling between antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic. The detailed nonstoichiometry and site mixing of MnSb2Te4 crystals depend on the growth parameters, which can lead to ≈40% of Mn sites occupied by Sb and ≈15% of Sb sites by Mn in as-grown crystals. Single-crystal neutron diffraction and electron microscopy studies show nearly random distribution of the antisite defects. Band structure calculations suggest that the Mn-Sb site mixing favors a ferromagnetic interlayer coupling, consistent with experimental observation, but is detrimental to the band inversion required for a nontrivial topology. Overall, our results suggest a long-range magnetic order of Mn ions sitting on Bi sites in MnBi 2 Te 4 . The effects of site mixing should be considered in all layered heterostructures that consist of alternating magnetic and topological layers, including the entire family of MnTe(Bi 2 Te 3 )n, its Sb analogs, and their solid solution.

Robust Surface States and Coherence Phenomena in Magnetically Alloyed SmB 6

Samarium hexaboride is a candidate for the topological Kondo insulator state, in which Kondo coherence is predicted to give rise to an insulating gap spanned by topological surface states. Here we investigate the surface and bulk electronic properties of magnetically alloyed Sm 1-x M x B 6 (M = Ce, Eu), using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and complementary characterization techniques. Remarkably, topologically nontrivial bulk and surface band structures are found to persist in highly modified samples with up to 30% Sm substitution and with an antiferromagnetic ground state in the case of Eu doping. The results are interpreted in terms of a hierarchy of energy scales, in which surface state emergence is linked to the formation of a direct Kondo gap, while low-temperature transport trends depend on the indirect gap.

Native defects in antiferromagnetic topological insulator MnBi 2 Te 4

Using scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy, in this study we visualized the native defects in antiferromagnetic topological insulator MnBi 2 Te 4 . Two native defects, Mn Bi and Bi Te antisites, can be well resolved in the topographic images. Mn Bi tend to suppress the density of states at the conduction band edge. Spectroscopy imaging reveals a localized peaklike local density of state at ~ 80 meV below the Fermi energy. A careful inspection of topographic and spectroscopic images, combined with density functional theory calculation, suggests this results from Bi Mn antisites at Mn sites. The random distribution of Mn Bi and Bi Mn antisites results in spatial fluctuation of local density of states near the Fermi level in MnBi 2 Te 4 .
