Keyboard With Voice Output

Voice synthesizer tells what key is about to be depressed. Verbal feedback useful for blind operators or where dim light prevents sighted operator from seeing keyboard. Also used where operator is busy observing other things while keying data into control system. Used as training aid for touch typing, and to train blind operators to use both standard and braille keyboards. Concept adapted to such equipment as typewriters, computers, calculators, telephones, cash registers, and on/off controls.

Double-Poppet Valve

New valve design includes two poppet/seat combinations actuated simultaneously. If one fails, other continues to seal against fluid flow. Valve primarily useful for handling dangerous fluids and lighter and more compact than comparable redundant-valve systems used at present.

Triple-Seal Valve

Handling of poisonous, flammable, or corrosive fluids made safer by new triple-seal valve concept. Three valves assembled in series, with stem mechanism for one valve serving as body of next valve. New design lighter and more compact than conventional three-series-valve combinations used with hazardous fluids.

Balanced-force flow-regulator valve

Valve regulates fluid pressure or flow by means of porous barrier and reduces surfaces exposed to liquid or gas flow that cause unbalanced pressure forces. Applications include hand valves, spool valves, and other devices that meter or control gases or liquids.

Fluid valve assembly

A valve assembly is reported for controlling the flow of fluids between the inlet and outlet of a fluid valve. The valve assembly contains a barrier element which is porous for providing fluid communication between the valve inlet and outlet. The valve assembly also includes a sealing element that is movable relative to the barrier element between a first position, in which fluid flow through the porous portion of the barrier element is blocked preventing fluid communication between the valve inlet and outlet, and a second position, in which the porous portion is unblocked, permitting fluid communication between the valve inlet and outlet.

Study of Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center utility systems

The results of an engineering study of potential energy saving utility system modifications for the NASA Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center are presented. The objective of the study was to define and analyze utility options that would provide facility energy savings in addition to the approximately 25 percent already achieved through an energy loads reduction program. A systems engineering approach was used to determine total system energy and cost savings resulting from each of the ten major options investigated. The results reported include detailed cost analyses and cost comparisons of various options. Cost are projected to the year 2000. Also included are a brief description of a mathematical model used for the analysis and the rationale used for a site survey to select buildings suitable for analysis.

Foldable patterns form construction blocks

Building blocks with interlocking tabs can be constructed from flat sheets of material using minimum of tools and equipment. Blocks can be used for storing and shipping supplies to remote areas, then filled with soil and stacked to form inhabitable structures which can be dismantled and reused.
