Comprehensive Synthesis and Structural Trends in Tetramethyl Diglycolamide (TMDGA) Nitrate Complexes with Lanthanides and Americium

Complexes of N,N,N',N'-tetramethyl diglycolamide (TMDGA), a hydrophilic diglycolamide (DGA) proposed as an aqueous phase holdback reagent, have been crystallized for the majority of the lanthanide series (excluding promethium), yttrium, and americium to deepen our structural understanding of trivalent metal ion (M 3+ ) DGA coordination compounds in the presence of nitrate counter-anions. The presented collection of 16 complexes with accompanying single-crystal structures, taking formulas [M(TMDGA) 3 ][M(NO 3 ) 6 ] (M = La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Am), [M(TMDGA) 3 ][M(NO 3 ) 5 (H 2 O)] 1–x [M(NO 3 ) 4 (H 2 O) 2 ] x (NO 3 ) 1+x (M = Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb), [M(TMDGA) 3 ] 2 [M(NO 3 ) 4 (H 2 O) 2 ] 0.75 [M(NO 3 ) 5 (H 2 O)] 1.25 (NO 3 ) 2.75 ·H 2 O (M = Lu), and [M(TMDGA) 3 ][M(NO 3 ) 5 (H 2 O)](NO 3 )·CH 3 OH (M = Y) were all synthesized via solvent diffusion of reaction mixtures containing the metal nitrate M(NO 3 ) 3 ·nH 2 O and TMDGA. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses of these new structures show that each TMDGA complex comprises of three TMDGA ligands coordinating the metal ion via carbonyl and etheric oxygen atoms forming [M(TMDGA) 3 ] 3+ cations. Spectroscopy measurements under high pressure displayed notable differences in the f → f transition shifting between that of Nd(III) and Am(III). Shifting of transitions by 2.0 nm were observed in Nd up to 8.50 ± 0.09 GPa, while Am saw shifting between 11.0 to 13.5 nm at pressures up to 20.06 ± 1.90 GPa. The local geometry in these complexes is a distorted spherical capped square antiprism (CSAPR-9) except for of the yttrium complex, which exhibits a distorted spherical tricapped trigonal prismatic (TCTPR-9) geometry. Further, the anions that form concomitantly with the TMDGA complexes are composed of hexanitrato species for the early lanthanide ions (lanthanum to samarium); whereas the remaining smaller lanthanides did not possess sufficiently large ionic radii to coordinate six bidentate nitrate anions, instead, one or two nitrate anions are situated in the outer sphere. The systematic progression of changes in the anionic environments of these complexes outlines the changing coordination habits afforded by the lanthanide contraction.

Synthesis and characterization of a bimetallic americium( iii ) pyrithionate coordination complex

Here, the aqueous reaction of sodium pyrithione, (Na)mpo, with 243 AmCl 3 ·nH 2 O yields a dimerized complex, [ 243 Am(mpo) 2 (μ-O-mpo)(H 2 O)] 2 ·3H 2 O. This compound is compared with isostructural lanthanide pyrithionates, where dimerization across the 4f-block is observed to be dependent upon the size of the cation. Unlike in most reported Am(III) UV-visible absorption spectra, [ 243 Am(mpo) 2 (μ-O-mpo)(H 2 O)] 2 ·3H 2 O shows significant splitting in the fingerprint excitations. This is attributed to a unique ligand-field environment, where the Am–mpo bonds possess different bonding compared to the Nd(III) analog because of increasing covalent interactions.

A Single Small-Scale Plutonium Redox Reaction System Yields Three Crystallographically-Characterizable Organoplutonium Complexes

Here, an approach to obtaining substantial amounts of data from a hazardous starting material that can only be obtained and handled in small quantities is demonstrated by the investigation of a single small-scale reaction of cyclooctatetraene, C 8 H 8 , with a solution obtained from the reduction of Cp' 3 Pu (Cp' = C 5 H 4 SiMe 3 ) with potassium graphite. This one reaction coupled with oxidation of a product has provided single-crystal X-ray structural data on three organoplutonium compounds as well as information on redox chemistry thereby demonstrating an efficient route to new reactivity and structural information on this highly radioactive element. The crystal structures were obtained from the reduction of C 8 H 8 by a putative Pu(II) complex, (Cp' 3 Pu II ) 1– , generated in situ, to form the Pu(III) cyclooctatetraenide complex, [K(crypt)][(C 8 H 8 ) 2 Pu III ], 1-Pu , and the tetra(cyclopentadienyl) Pu(III) complex, [K(crypt)][Cp' 4 Pu III ], 2-Pu . Oxidation of the sample of 1-Pu with Ag(I) afforded a third organoplutonium complex that has been structurally characterized for the first time, (C 8 H 8 ) 2 Pu IV , 3-Pu . Complexes 1-Pu and 3-Pu contain Pu sandwiched between parallel (C 8 H 8 ) 2– rings. The (Cp' 4 Pu III ) – anion in 2-Pu features three η 5 -Cp' rings and one η 1 -Cp' ring, which is a rare example of a formal Pu–C η 1 -bond. In addition, this study addresses the challenge of small-scale synthesis imparted by radiological and material availability of transuranium isotopes, in particular that of pure metal samples. A route to an anhydrous Pu(III) starting material from the more readily available Pu IV O 2 was developed to facilitate reproducible syntheses and allow complete spectroscopic analysis of 1-Pu and 2-Pu . Pu IV O 2 was converted to Pu III Br 3 (DME) 2 (DME = CH 3 OCH 2 CH 2 OCH 3 ) and subsequently Pu III Br 3 (THF) x , which was used to independently synthesize 1-Pu , 2-Pu , and 3-Pu .
