Unconventional Anomalous Hall Effect Driven by Self‐Intercalation in Covalent 2D Magnet Cr 2 Te 3

Covalent 2D magnets such as Cr 2 Te 3 , which feature self-intercalated magnetic cations located between monolayers of transition-metal dichalcogenide material, offer a unique platform for controlling magnetic order and spin texture, enabling new potential applications for spintronic devices. Here, it is demonstrated that the unconventional anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in Cr 2 Te 3 , characterized by additional humps and dips near the coercive field in AHE hysteresis, originates from an intrinsic mechanism dictated by the self-intercalation. This mechanism is distinctly different from previously proposed mechanisms such as topological Hall effect, or two-channel AHE arising from spatial inhomogeneities. Crucially, multiple Weyl-like nodes emerge in the electronic band structure due to strong spin-orbit coupling, whose positions relative to the Fermi level is sensitively modulated by the canting angles of the self-intercalated Cr cations. These nodes contribute strongly to the Berry curvature and AHE conductivity. This component competes with the contribution from bands that are less affected by the self-intercalation, resulting in a sign change in AHE with temperature and the emergence of additional humps and dips. The findings provide compelling evidence for the intrinsic origin of the unconventional AHE in Cr 2 Te 3 and further establish self-intercalation as a control knob for engineering AHE in complex magnets.

A Facile Aqueous Solution Route for the Growth of Chalcogenide Perovskite BaZrS 3 Films

The prototypical chalcogenide perovskite, BaZrS 3 (BZS), with its direct bandgap of 1.7–1.8 eV, high chemical stability, and strong light–matter interactions, has garnered significant interest over the past few years. So far, attempts to grow BaZrS 3 films have been limited mainly to physical vapor deposition techniques. Here, we report the fabrication of BZS thin films via a facile aqueous solution route of polymer-assisted deposition (PAD), where the polymer-chelated cation precursor films were sulfurized in a mixed CS 2 and Ar atmosphere. The formation of a single-phase polycrystalline BZS thin film at a processing temperature of 900 °C was confirmed by X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. The stoichiometry of the films was verified by Rutherford Backscattering spectrometry and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The BZS films showed a photoluminescence peak at around 1.8 eV and exhibited a photogenerated current under light illumination at a wavelength of 530 nm. Temperature-dependent resistivity analysis revealed that the conduction of BaZrS 3 films under the dark condition could be described by the Efros–Shklovskii variable range hopping model in the temperature range of 60–300 K, with an activation energy of about 44 meV.

Chalcogenide perovskite BaZrS 3 thin-film electronic and optoelectronic devices by low temperature processing

Owing to its superior visible light absorption and high chemical stability, chalcogenide perovskite barium zirconium sulfide (BaZrS 3 ) has attracted significant attention in the past few years as a potential alternative to hybrid halide perovskites for optoelectronics. However, the high processing temperatures of BaZrS 3 thin films at above 1000 °C severely limits their potential for device applications. Herein, we report the synthesis of BaZrS 3 thin films at temperatures as low as 500 °C, by changing the chemical reaction pathway. The single phase BaZrS 3 thin film was confirmed by X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. Atomic force microscopy and scanning electron microscopy show that crystalline size and surface roughness were consistently reduced with decreasing annealing temperature. The lower temperatures further eliminate sulfur vacancies and carbon contaminations associated with high temperature processing. The ability to synthesize chalcogenide perovskite thin films at lower temperatures removes a major hurdle for their device fabrication. The photodetectors demonstrate fast response and an on/off ratio of 80. Finally, the fabricated field effect transistors show an ambipolar behavior with electron and hole mobilities of 16.8 cm 2 /Vs and 2.6 cm 2 /Vs, respectively.

Covalent 2D Cr 2 Te 3 ferromagnet

To broaden the scope of van der Waals 2D magnets, we report the synthesis and magnetism of covalent 2D magnetic Cr 2 Te 3 with a thickness down to one-unit-cell. The 2D Cr 2 Te 3 crystals exhibit robust ferromagnetism with a Curie temperature of 180 K, a large perpendicular anisotropy of 7 × 10 5 J m -3 , and a high coercivity of ~4.6 kG at 20 K. First principles calculations further show a transition from canted to collinear ferromagnetism, a transition from perpendicular to in-plane anisotropy, and emergent half-metallic behavior in atomically-thin Cr 2 Te 3 , suggesting its potential application for injecting carriers with high spin polarization into spintronic devices.
