Decrease of keV electron and ion fluxes in the dayside magnetosphere during the early phase of magnetospheric disturbances

It is shown that a decrease of the keV particle fluxes in the dayside magnetosphere near the geosynchronous orbit is characteristic of the first several hours of magnetospheric disturbances. After some hours newly injected plasma from the nightside reaches the 'evacuated' regions of the dayside magnetosphere and strong flux increases are observed. The 'evacuation' of the dayside magnetosphere is interpreted in terms of a change in the convection pattern associated with an increase of the large scale electric field at the onset of the disturbance. The model presented is capable of accommodating all characteristics of the observational data, such as the temporal and spatial distributions, energy and pitch angle characteristics, and differences between electrons and protons.

The dawn polar cap boundary at high altitude

A plasma decrease event has been observed in the dawn sector during large magnetic storms. Supporting plasma data from ATS-6 and GEOS-1 satellites are used to argue that this type of decrease is similar to the midnight-sector plasma-sheet boundary crossing. Implications of such a boundary crossing near dawn for the storm time magnetic field are discussed.

Particle and optical measurements in the magnetic noon sector of the auroral oval

Simultaneous airborne photometric and satellite particle measurements in the mid-day sector of the auroral oval, around magnetic local noon, are presented. The two sets of measurements are employed independently to delineate various magnetospheric boundaries. The results derived from the particle measurements are compared with those from the photometric observations to assess the reliability of the photometric technique in identifying various magnetospheric regions.
