Icy Satellites Impactor Probes for the Jovian Icy Moons Orbiter
We present a preliminary design and mission description for Icy Satellites Impactor Probes (IPS). This design addresses two of the scientific themes of this Icy Galilean Satellites Forum: Surface Chemistry and Geophysics, and Interior Structures. Impactor probes may also make significant contributions in the areas of surface geology and mineralogy.
Challenging technology and technology infusion into 21st century
In preparing for the space exploration challenges of the next century, the national aeronautics and space administration (NASA) center for integrated space micro-systems (CISM) is chartered to develop advanced spacecraft systems that can be adapted for a large spectrum of future space missions.
Probing the interstellar medium in early-type galaxies with Infrared Space Oberservatory observations
Four IRAS-detected early-type galaxies were observed with the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO). With the exception of the 15 mu m image of NGC 1052, the mid-IR images of NGC 1052, NGC 1155, NGC 5866, and NGC 6958 at 4.5, 7, and 15 mu m show extended emission.

ISOCAM Observations of Normal Star-Forming Galaxies: The Key Project Sample
We present mid-infrared maps and preliminary analysis for 61 galaxies observed with the Infrared Space Observatory.
Integrated Avionics System (IAS), Integrating 3-D Technology on a Spacecraft Panel
As spacecraft designs converge toward miniaturization, and with the volumetric and mass challenges placed on avionics, programs will continue to advance the state of the art in spacecraft system development with new challenges to reduce power, mass and volume.

Pneumatic Spoiler Controls Airfoil Lift
Air ejection from leading edge of airfoil used for controlled decrease of lift. Pneumatic-spoiler principle developed for equalizing lift on helicopter rotor blades. Also used to enhance aerodynamic control of short-fuselage or rudderless aircraft such as "flying-wing" airplanes. Leading-edge injection increases maneuverability of such high-performance fixed-wing aircraft as fighters.
Concurrent engineering
The following subject areas are covered: issues (liquid rocket propulsion - current development approach, current certification process, and costs of engineering changes); state of the art (DICE information management system, key government participants, project development strategy, quality management, and numerical propulsion system simulation); needs identified; and proposed program.
IRAS observations of irregular galaxies
Normal irregular galaxies seem to be unusual in having vigorous star formation yet lacking the many dark nebulae typical of spirals. The Infrared Astronomy Satellite (IRAS) observations of a large sample of irregulars are used to explore the dust contents of these galaxies. Compared to normal spirals, the irregulars generally have higher L sub IR/L sub B ratios, warmer f(100)/f(60) dust color temperatures, and lower globally-averaged dust/gas ratios. The relationship between the infrared data and various global optical properties of the galaxies is discussed.
Star formation in blue galaxies. I - Ultraviolet, optical, and infrared observations of NGC 4214 and NGC 4670
NGC 4214 and NGC 4760 have been observed between 1150 A and 1950 A with the IUE satellite, and new infrared and optical broad-band photometry have been obtained. The spectra of both galaxies are dominated by O stars, and, in the spectrum of NGC 4214, the C IV 1550 A line exhibits a P Cygni profile indicative of hot stars with large mass-loss rates. Although the optical spectra of both galaxies are dominated by strong narrow emission lines, no strong emission lines are seen in the UV (the observed Ly-alpha flux is dominated by geocoronal emission). Both galaxies contain giant H II region complexes in which the energy (in particular, the H-beta luminosity and the ultraviolet continuum) is provided by several hundred O stars. The comparison of the observed UVOIR energy distributions with evolutionary population models indicates that the regions observed consist of young 'bursts' of star formation superposed on an underlying old population. The initial mass function for this epoch of star formation is constrained to be similar in slope to or flatter than the Salpeter function.
Markarian 36: A young galaxy
The UV, optical, and IR observations of three galaxies (NGC 4214, NGC4670 = Haro 9, and Markarian 36) are reported. The optical spectrum of Markarian 36, a dwarf galaxy, is dominated by strong emission lines. The UV spectrum however shows no strong emission lines, only weak C IV and Si absorption and a strong blue continuum that is still rising shortward of Lyman alpha. Combined UV, optical and IR observations show that the continuum is nearly Rayleigh-Jeans from 1100 A to 2.2 microns, with a slight excess in the optical due to free-free emission and recombination lines. This galaxy has few, if any, red stars. Combined with its low metal content, this lack of red stars is a very strong indication that this galaxy has only recently begun to form stars.
Development of a three dimensional numerical water quality model for continental shelf applications
A model to predict the distribution of water quality parameters in three dimensions was developed. The mass transport equation was solved using a non-dimensional vertical axis and an alternating-direction-implicit finite difference technique. The reaction kinetics of the constituents were incorporated into a matrix method which permits computation of the interactions of multiple constituents. Methods for the computation of dispersion coefficients and coliform bacteria decay rates were determined. Numerical investigations of dispersive and dissipative effects showed that the three-dimensional model performs as predicted by analysis of simpler cases. The model was then applied to a two dimensional vertically averaged tidal dynamics model for the Providence River. It was also extended to a steady state application by replacing the time step with an iteration sequence. This modification was verified by comparison to analytical solutions and applied to a river confluence situation.
