Investigating Mercury’s Environment with the Two-Spacecraft BepiColombo Mission

The ESA-JAXA BepiColombo mission will provide simultaneous measurements from two spacecraft, offering an unprecedented opportunity to investigate magnetospheric and exospheric dynamics at Mercury as well as their interactions with the solar wind, radiation, and interplanetary dust. Many scientific instruments onboard the two spacecraft will be completely, or partially devoted to study the near-space environment of Mercury as well as the complex processes that govern it. Many issues remain unsolved even after the MESSENGER mission that ended in 2015. The specific orbits of the two spacecraft, MPO and Mio, and the comprehensive scientific payload allow a wider range of scientific questions to be addressed than those that could be achieved by the individual instruments acting alone, or by previous missions. These joint observations are of key importance because many phenomena in Mercury’s environment are highly temporally and spatially variable. Finally, examples of possible coordinated observations are described in this article, analysing the required geometrical conditions, pointing, resolutions and operation timing of different BepiColombo instruments sensors.

HCO(+) ionization from SGR1806-20

The region surrounding the soft gamma ray repeater SGR 1806-20 in the HCO(+) (J = 1-0) transition was observed. Previous observations of compact Galactic objects suggest that a link exists between these objects and molecular clouds in which they are possibly embedded. Such a link would help explain some of the phenomena observed from these objects. A measure of the ionization rate as a function of distance from the source implies that the cloud is associated with the source. The abundance of HCO(+), which varies with increasing or decreasing ionization rates, is considered to be an ideal tool for this measurement. The observations acquired in the direction of the nebula surrounding SGR 1806-20 are presented, and the resulting 7 x 12 arcmin map derived from the HCO(+) data is shown.

Long and short timescale variability of magnetic activity on the BY Dra star BD+26 deg 730

BD+26 degree 730 is a very active K5V flare star with a 60 year starspot cycle. Since it is also nearly pole-on, it presents an unusual opportunity to study purely temporal evolution of magnetic activity. Contemporaneous International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE), magnetic flux, polarimetric, and H alpha observations of the star taken over several rotational periods in 1988 are presented. When combined with older photometry, optical and IUE archive spectra, the data show a surprising lack of any activity variability on either short (few days) or long (years) timescales. The lack of variability is suggested to be due to a nearly saturated level of magnetic activity on the star, as indicated by its large magnetic filling factor.
