Cathodoluminescence and microprobe analyses show that carbonates in Y791198 exhibit complex zoning. Cr-Mn dating suggests formation of carbonates 10 Ma after CAI formation Additional information is contained in the original extended abstract..
Studies of individual presolar SiC grains have shown that most are enriched in Si-29, Si-30, and C-13, and depleted in N-15, compared to solar-system abundances and that many have large excesses of Mg-26, most plausibly from in situ decay of Al-26. Stone et al., observed that Si from a family of platy SiC grains define a linear array on a 3-isotope plot that does not pass through normal solar-system Si. In contrast, Si-isotope data from over 100 3-4 micron SiC grains from Murchison from an elongate ellipse enclosing the Stone et al. linear array but also including 'normal' solar-system Si. To investigate whether this difference in Si isotopes indicates different populations of SiC in the two meteorites and to improve the characterization of Orgueil SiC, we used the PANURGE ion microprobe to measure Si, C, N, and Mg isotopes and Al and Na concentrations in a suite of 2-5 micron SiC grains from a new sample of Orgueil.
Results are presented of a detailed petrologic, chemical, and Mg-isotope study of SA-1, a basaltic Allende plagioclase-olivine inclusion. The chemical and isotopic data were used to identify the signatures of nebular vs. planetary processes and to determine if SA-1 contains a component produced by planetary differentiation. It was found that the results of major-element and trace-element abundances in SA-1 are inconsistent with its formation as a mixture of nebular materials. It is suggested that SA-1 contains a chemically fractionated component produced by igneous differentiation.
Chemical compositions of ten opaque assemblages, or Fremdlinge, from an Allende Type B Ca-,Al-rich coarse-grained inclusion were determined. Attempts to model the abundances of refractory siderophiles assuming condensation from the solar nebula into a single phase failed to match the observed combination of subchondritic Re/Os and Ir/Pt ratios. However, virtually all refractory siderophile fractionations in these Fremdlinge could be matched by a different model, in which all metals condensed into three separate alloys according to their crystal structures.
Results are presented on the partitioning experiments for trace elements Be, Sc, Ba, La, Ce, and Tm between melilite and melt for a bulk composition relevant to Type B inclusions, using a technique, described by Brody and Flemings (1966), by which distributon coeffecients can be obtained over the entire range of crystallization from trace element analysis of a single zoned crystal. Zoned crystals of melilite were grown during controlled cooling rate experiments, and trace element concentrations were determined by SIMS. At each step in the crystal growth, trace element concentrations in the coexisting melt were determined by mass balance, using stepwise integration of a Rayleigh fractionation equation.
Experimental studies indicate that opaque assemblages rich in refractory siderophile elements were formed within host calcium- and aluminum-rich inclusions (CAIs) by exsolution, oxidation and sulphidization of homogeneous alloys, rather than by aggregation of materials in the solar nebula before the formation of CAIs. These opaque assemblages are thus not the oldest known solid materials, as was once thought, and they do not constrain processes in the early solar nebula before CAI formation. Instead, the assemblages record the changing oxygen fugacity experienced by CAIs during slow cooling in nebular and/or planetary environments.
A detailed petrographic and chemical study of Zelda (a gigantic sulfide-rich Fremdling from the Allende Ca-rich inclusion, CAI, Egg 6) and its contact with the host was conducted using analytical SEM and electron-microprobe techniques, and the results were compared with those obtained on other sulfide-rich and oxide-rich Fremdlinge. Strong evidence is presented that Zelda, a type-example of sulfide-rich Fremdlinge, has been formed from a preexisting Ur-Fremdling, similar by composition to Willy, by closed-system sulfidization of magnetite and metal. At least two different sulfidization mechanisms appear to have occurred in altering Fremdlinge: one producing compositionally homogeneous equigranular objects such as Zelda, the other producing compositionally and texturally heterogeneous objects.
This paper presents the first isotopic measurements, made with an ion microprobe, of Mg, Fe, Mo, Ru, and W in Fremdlinge and refractory metal nuggets from Allende meteorite. No non-mass-dependent deviations exceeding 1 percent from normal solar isotopic abundances were found for any of the elements analyzed, despite the unusual mineralogy of Fremdlinge and the extreme enrichment in refractory siderophile elements. It is concluded that the chemical, petrologic, and isotopic data on Fremdlinge are most plausibly interpreted in terms of the origin of Fremdlinge within the solar nebula.
