Space sciences are confronted with overwhelming volume of data. The data rates are increasing, the granularity of registered observations is continuously refining, and computer technology allows producing terabytes of images and catalogs. The inexpensive emerging storage technologies, combined with the availability of high-speed communications will offer the infrastructure for extremely large data repositories to be accessible on-line. Mission data will be quickly accessible almost immediately after it has been collected from space observations. On-line science will demand for new tools and technologies for data access, data analysis, and data discovery. These trends will enhance the archival operational concepts mainly related to the long-term information preservation, placing an equally important emphasis on rapid data production, and dissemination to consumers.
Science missions and instruments continue to produce volumes of useful data and scientists depend on the data systems and tools that archive this data as a means to access and analyze it.
This paper describes the Data Distribution Laboratory (DDL) and discusses issues involved in building multimedia CD-ROMs. It describes the modeling philosophy for cataloging multimedia products and the worldwide-web (WWW)-based multimedia archive and retrieval system (Webcat) built on that model.
CD-R may become an excellent way to archive because it has a storage life of about 100 years; however , its recorders, test devices and compatibility with CD-ROM readers need to be verified. Of the 250 sample recordings, every byte was retrievable on some CD-ROM readers.
This article reviews the features and functionality of five desktop pre-mastering software packages for the PC. Desktop pre-mastering packages are aimed primarily at end-users interested in bringing CD-ROM publishing tasks in-house, rather than traditional CD-ROM developers.
Compact Disc - Read Only Memory (CD-ROM) has fulfilled its promise of becoming a dominant data storage and distribution media of the 90's.
