Monte Carlo Study of the Formation of Chromosome Aberrations by Direct Ion Traversal vs. Delta-Electrons

Space radiation constitutes a major risk for the safety of space travel. Galactic Cosmic Rays (GCRs) are made of high energy protons (87%), high energy helium ions (12%) and high-charge and energy (HZE) ions [1]. At a cellular scale, HZE ions display a characteristic pattern of energy deposition, known as the ion track, that correlates with the ion linear energy transfer (LET). These energy deposition events (ionizations/excitations) create DNA breaks that, if misrepaired, lead to the formation of chromosome aberrations (CAs). Compared to low-LET terrestrial radiations (X-rays and γ-rays), high LET ions are known to create complex, clustered DNA breaks that are particularly efficient at forming CAs. Indeed, ion tracks are usually described as a dense ionization core, where clustered breaks are formed, and a penumbra, made of low-LET δ-electrons that have sufficient energy to travel across many cells and induce breaks that are more homogeneously distributed. In this work, we investigated the formation of CAs, and separated them into two contributions (direct ion traversal of the nucleus vs.δ-electrons), to elucidate to which extent δ-electrons contribute to CA formation.

Evaluation of the spaceflight cardiovascular risk using the clinical prediction model Astro-CHARM and the NASA Radiation Risk Model

- Exposure to space radiation may pose a risk for cardiovascular diseases (CVD) during and after spaceflight. - The CVD risk should be quantified to plan future long-duration space missions such as the manned flight to Mars. - Assessing CVD risk is complicated by its multifactorial nature, where an individual’s risk is strongly influenced by risk factors such as family history, blood pressure, and lipid profiles. - In the NASA Space Radiation Risk Model, the metrics of radiation exposure-induced cases (REIC) and radiation exposure-induced death (REID) are used to quantify the risk attributable to radiation over a lifetime after exposure.

Analytical Calculation of the Energy Deposition Spectrum and Average Dose to A Spherical Target at All Impact Parameters

Microdosimetry is used to estimate quality factors for risk assessment in radiation protection and to quantify relative biological effectiveness (RBE) for treatment planning of hadron radiation therapy. Radiation physics has shown that energetic ions deposit energy in a complex manner: the track structure. The Local Effect Model (LEM) is often used as an approximation to describe this complex track structure. We have previously calculated an analytical expression for the dose to a spherical target fully located in the penumbra of an ion track using the LEM. In this work, the calculation has been extended to all impact parameters. Furthermore, using these analytical expressions, it was possible to obtain the theoretical energy deposition spectra to a sphere irradiated uniformly.
