In-plane multi-q magnetic ground state of Na 3 Co 2 SbO 6

We report Na 3 Co 2 SbO 6 is a potential Kitaev magnet with a monoclinic layered crystal structure. Recent investigations of the C3-symmetric sister compound Na 2 Co 2 TeO 6 have uncovered a unique triple-q magnetic ground state, as opposed to a single-q (zigzag) one, prompting us to examine the influence of the reduced structural symmetry of Na 3 Co 2 SbO 6 on its ground state. Neutron diffraction data obtained on a twin-free crystal reveal that the ground state remains a multi-q state, despite the system's strong non-C 3 -symmetric anisotropy. This robustness of multi-q orders suggests that they are driven by a common mechanism in the honeycomb cobaltates, such as interactions beyond the bilinear order. Spin-polarized neutron diffraction results show that the ordered moments are entirely in plane, with each staggered component orthogonal to the propagating wave vector. The inferred ground state appears more compatible with the so-called XXZ easy-plane anisotropy than the Kitaev anisotropy, and features unequal ordered moments reduced by strong quantum fluctuations.

Composition dependence of bulk properties in the Co-intercalated transition metal dichalcogenide $\mathrm{Co_{1/3}TaS_2}$

Spontaneous Hall conductivity has recently been reported in the triangular lattice antiferromagnet Co 1/3 TaS 2 under a zero magnetic field. This phenomenon originates from the distinctive noncoplanar triple-Q magnetic ground state, possessing uniform real-space Berry curvature characterized by scalar spin chirality. We investigated the physical properties of Co 1/3 TaS 2 by judiciously controlling the composition, revealing a drastic change in its bulk properties, even by slight variations in cobalt composition, despite the same crystal structure. For 0.299≤x≤0.325, Co x TaS 2 keeps all the characteristics of the ground state consistent with the previous studies—two antiferromagnetic phase transitions at T N1 and T N2 ( N1 ), a large spontaneous Hall conductivity [σ xy (H=0)], and a weak ferromagnetic moment along the c axis. However, samples with x≥0.330 exhibit distinct bulk properties, including the absence of both σ xy (H=0) and the weak ferromagnetic moment. Our neutron diffraction data reveal that Co x TaS 2 with x≥0.330 develops coplanar helical magnetic order with q m1 =(1/3, 0, 0). This is entirely different from what has been seen in x≤0.325, explaining the observed composition dependence.

Tetrahedral triple-Q magnetic ordering and large spontaneous Hall conductivity in the metallic triangular antiferromagnet Co 1/3 TaS 2

The triangular lattice antiferromagnet (TLAF) has been the standard paradigm of frustrated magnetism for several decades. The most common magnetic ordering in insulating TLAFs is the 120° structure. However, a new triple-Q chiral ordering can emerge in metallic TLAFs, representing the short wavelength limit of magnetic skyrmion crystals. We report the metallic TLAF Co 1 / 3 TaS 2 as the first example of tetrahedral triple-Q magnetic ordering with the associated topological Hall effect (non-zero σ xy (H = 0)). We also present a theoretical framework that describes the emergence of this magnetic ground state, which is further supported by the electronic structure measured by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Additionally, our measurements of the inelastic neutron scattering cross section are consistent with the calculated dynamical structure factor of the tetrahedral triple-Q state.

Spiral spin cluster in the hyperkagome antiferromagnet Mn 3 RhSi

Local spin correlation orders emerge in a paramagnetic state, with notable examples such as the partial order, cooperative paramagnetism, and soliton spin liquid. The noncentrosymmetric intermetallic antiferromagnet Mn 3 RhSi also exhibits the local spin correlation order in the paramagnetic state as magnetic short-range order in a wide temperature range. Here, we show that the local spin correlation order has a spiral structure by neutron scattering measurement of a Mn 3 RhSi single crystal. The possible origins of the magnetic cluster formation are discussed in terms of the Lifshitz invariant and the Griffiths phase, and compared with the room-temperature skyrmion phase of Co 7 Zn 7 Mn 6 and non-Fermi liquid behavior of β-Mn.

Weak trimerization in the frustrated two-dimensional triangular Heisenberg antiferromagnet Lu y Y 1-y MnO 3

To understand the 2D triangular Heisenberg antiferromagnetic system, we investigated the magnetic structures and the dynamics of Lu y Y 1-y MnO 3 in detail. The substitutions are adjusted to the Mn atomic position close to x Mn =$\frac{1}{3}$. The neutron powder diffraction data claims that the magnetic structure of Lu y Y 1-y MnO 3 is described as a mixture of Γ 3 (P6' 3 cm') and Γ 4 (P6' 3 c'm) at the x Mn position for y=0.15, 0.30, and 0.45. The ratio of Γ 3 and Γ 4 depends on temperature and composition and the fraction of Γ 3 increases upon cooling, while no clear trimerization was observed at the xMn position. We estimated exchange parameters from the analysis of the low-energy part of the spin waves. The results showed a weak trimerization effect on cooling because the nearest-neighbor exchange interaction is slightly enhanced. The temperature dependence of the spin-wave dispersion around the Γ point shows that the spin gap closes with increasing temperature because the exchange interactions in the nearest Mn-Mn neighbor become smaller. Gapless diffusive magnetic excitation from a Mn triangular lattice has been observed in a wide range in Q and E space of Lu y Y 1-y MnO 3 . We found that Lu 0.3 Y 0.7 MnO 3 could be an ideal case to investigate the trimerization, frustrated magnetism, and magnetoelastic coupling often observed in two-dimensional triangular lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet systems.

Magnetic molecular orbitals in MnSi

A large body of knowledge about magnetism is attained from models of interacting spins, which usually reside on magnetic ions. Proposals beyond the ionic picture are uncommon and seldom verified by direct observations in conjunction with microscopic theory. Here, using inelastic neutron scattering to study the itinerant near-ferromagnet MnSi, we find that the system’s fundamental magnetic units are interconnected, extended molecular orbitals consisting of three Mn atoms each rather than individual Mn atoms. This result is further corroborated by magnetic Wannier orbitals obtained by ab initio calculations. It contrasts the ionic picture with a concrete example and presents an unexplored regime of the spin waves where the wavelength is comparable to the spatial extent of the molecular orbitals. Our discovery brings important insights into not only the magnetism of MnSi but also a broad range of magnetic quantum materials where structural symmetry, electron itinerancy, and correlations act in concert.

Chern numbers of topological phonon band crossing determined with inelastic neutron scattering

Topological invariants in the band structure, such as Chern numbers, are important for the understanding and classification of the topological properties of matter and dictate the occurrence of exotic behaviors, yet their direct spectroscopic determination has been largely limited to electronic bands. Here, we use inelastic neutron scattering in conjunction with ab initio calculations to identify a variety of topological phonon band crossings in MnSi and CoSi single crystals. We find a distinct relation between the Chern numbers of a band-crossing node and the scattering intensity modulation in momentum space around the node. Given sufficiently high resolution, our method can be used to determine arbitrarily large Chern numbers of topological phonon band-crossing nodes.

Spin texture induced by non-magnetic doping and spin dynamics in 2D triangular lattice antiferromagnet h -Y(Mn,Al)O 3

Novel effects induced by nonmagnetic impurities in frustrated magnets and quantum spin liquid represent a highly nontrivial and interesting problem. A theoretical proposal of extended modulated spin structures induced by doping of such magnets, distinct from the well-known skyrmions has attracted significant interest. Here, we demonstrate that nonmagnetic impurities can produce such extended spin structures in h-YMnO 3 , a triangular antiferromagnet with noncollinear magnetic order. Using inelastic neutron scattering (INS), we measured the full dynamical structure factor in Al-doped h-YMnO 3 and confirmed the presence of magnon damping with a clear momentum dependence. Our theoretical calculations can reproduce the key features of the INS data, supporting the formation of the proposed spin textures. As such, our study provides the first experimental confirmation of the impurity-induced spin textures. It offers new insights and understanding of the impurity effects in a broad class of noncollinear magnetic systems.
