UV Observations of the Galaxy Cluster Abell 1795 with the Optical Monitor on XMM-Newton

We present the results of an analysis of broad band UV observations of the central regions of Abell 1795 observed with the optical monitor on XMM-Newton. As have been found with other UV observations of the central regions of clusters of galaxies, we find evidence for star formation. However, we also find evidence for absorption in the cD galaxy on a more extended scale than has been seen with optical imaging. We also report the first UV observation of part of the filamentary structure seen in H-alpha, X-rays and very deep U band imaging. The part of the filament we see is very blue with UV colours consistent with a very early (O/B) stellar population. This is the first direct evidence of a dominant population of early type stars at the centre of Abell 1795 and implies very recent star formation. The relationship of this emission to emission at other wavebands is discussed.

X-ray search for dark lens objects

The quasi-stellar object (QSO) MG 2016+112 is searched for and probably identified as an X-ray cluster of galaxies by the Advanced Satellite for Cosmology and Astrophysics (ASCA) observations. The MG 2016+112 is a gravitational lensed system with three confirmed lensed images of the QSO at a redshift of 3.27. The X-ray spectrum suggests that the new record of the highest redshift of clusters of galaxies, from which X-ray and iron K-line emission were detected, was reached.

Discovery and implications of very low metal abundances in NGC 1404 and NGC 4374

We present our analysis of ASCA PV phase observations of the elliptical galaxies NGC 1404 and NGC 4374 (M84). The average metallicities in the hot gas derived from the SIS spectra are exceptionally low, Z approximately 0.15 solar, while the temperatures are 'typical,' kT approximately 0.75 keV. We also place upper limits on intrinsic column densities. The low abundances lend support to the theory of Fe enrichment of intracluster media by protogalactic Type II supernova-driven winds and raise the possibility of a fundamental connection between baryon fraction, dissipation, and abundances in elliptical galaxies.

X-ray study of NGC 1399 in the Fornax cluster of galaxies

Observations of the cD galaxy NGC 1399 in the Fornax cluster of galaxies with Ginga have detected extended X-ray emission out to a radius of more than about 360 kpc. The energy spectrum of this emission is well fitted with an optically thin thermal spectrum with kT = 1.46 +0.05/-0.21 keV with a strong iron emission line corresponding to an iron abundance of 1.1 +1.3/-0.5 times solar. The mass of the hot gas responsible for X-ray emission is nearly the same as the total stellar mass of the cluster. Therefore the presence of iron at near-solar abundance suggests that the mass of the hot gas ejected from galaxies is comparable to the total stellar mass. This result indicates that most of the hot gas in a very poor cluster is created through ejections from galaxies, rather than being primordial.
