MUlti-SpEctral, MUlti-SpEcies, MUlti-SatEllite (MUSES) Retrieval Algorithm: Towards Extending Multi-Decadal NASA EOS Atmospheric Composition Data Records

Multi-Spectra, Multi-Species, Multi-Sensors (MUSES): Builds off of heritage from the Tropospheric Emission Spectrometer (TES) optimal estimation (OE) algorithm to combine a priori and satellite data, including rigorous error analysis diagnostics and observation operators needed for trend analysis, climate model evaluation, and data assimilation; has generic design to incorporate forward model radiances from hyperspectral measurements from multiple sensors into the joint retrieval algorithm.

Lamination and polar vortex development in fall from ATMOS long-lived trace gases observed during November 1994

Long-lived trace-gas profiles observed by the Atmospheric Trace Molecule Spectroscopy (ATMOS) instrument around the developing polar vortex (the protovortex) during early November 1994 show distinctive inversions (lamiane). High-resolution profiles calculated using a reverse trajectory (RT) model to produce the majority of these laminae, demonstrating that most of these features arise from advection by the large-scale winds.

Subsidence, Mixing and Denitrification of Arctic Polar Vortex Air Measured During POLARIS

A new technique is presented to determine the degree of denitrification that occured during the 1996/97 Arctic winter, based on balloon and aircraft borne measurements of NOy, N2O and CH4. In this study high-altitude balloon measurements are used to define the properties of air masses that later descend in the polar vortex to altitudes sampled by the ER-2 aircraft and mix isentropically with mid-latitude air.
