Observation of orbital selective charge transfer in a Fe/BaTi⁢O 3 interfacial two-dimensional electron gas

Two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) states at oxide interfaces between two ferroic materials have been fertile ground to realize controllable multiferroicity. Here, in this work, we investigate the 2DEG states at the interface of ferroelectric BaTi⁢O 3 and a magnetic layer of iron using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Orbital-selective charge transfer occurs on the surprisingly robust 2DEG. Based on first-principles calculations, we show how the interfacial hybridization can give rise to the unexpected charge transfer in the magnetic 2DEG. Our study reveals a close interplay on a 2DEG between magnetic and ferroelectric interfaces, which sheds light on future design principles of multiferroic 2DEG states.

Low-energy electronic interactions in ferrimagnetic Sr 2 CrReO 6 thin films

We reveal in this study the fundamental low-energy landscape in the ferrimagnetic Sr 2 CrReO 6 double perovskite and describe the underlying mechanisms responsible for the three low-energy excitations below 1.4 eV. Here, based on resonant inelastic x-ray scattering and magnetic dynamics calculations, and experiments collected from both Sr 2 CrReO 6 powders and epitaxially strained thin films, we reveal a strong competition between spin-orbit coupling, Hund’s coupling, and the strain-induced tetragonal crystal field. Here, we also demonstrate that a spin-flip process is at the origin of the lowest excitation at 200 meV, and we bring insights into the predicted presence of orbital ordering in this material. We study the nature of the magnons through a combination of ab initio and spin-wave theory calculations, and show that two nondegenerate magnon bands exist and are dominated either by rhenium or chromium spins. The rhenium band is found to be flat at about 200 meV (±25 meV) through X-L-W-U high-symmetry points and is dispersive toward Γ.

Twisting and Rippling of a Two-Dimensional Kagome Lattice: Silica on Au(111)

We report the intrinsic properties of two-dimensional (2D) SiO 2 were revealed by forming the material on inert Au(111). Growth by SiO deposition enabled formation of a crystalline phase consisting of two linked sheets of six-membered rings of tetrahedral [SiO 4 ] building units. The bases of the tetrahedra form an isostatic 2D kagome lattice. The weak interaction with Au allowed a new corrugation of the 2D material to be detected: ripples with a ~ 4 nm periodicity that help stabilize the 2D crystalline layer. On the atomic scale, substantial distortions from ideal hexagonal rings were observed even though crystalline defects were extremely rare. The ring distortions were reproduced in theoretical models that showed that they were associated with a twisting of the 2D kagome lattice, which stabilizes the material when subjected to disturbances. The twisting and rippling impart 2D silica with the flexibility to adapt to strain and changes in the crystallographic direction without introducing defects.

Micrometre-scale single-crystalline borophene on a square-lattice Cu(100) surface

Borophene, a crystalline monolayer boron sheet, is a new two-dimensional (2D) quantum material, predicted to feature tunable structure, intriguing physics and to find applications in flexible electronics, energy storage and catalysis. Nanoscale borophene flakes have been synthesized on noble-metal surfaces, but for device fabrication, one needs large single-crystal domains. In this work, we report the synthesis of borophene on a square lattice Cu(100) surface and show that incommensurate coordinations could reduce the borophene-substrate interactions and alter the borophene structures in interesting ways. Micrometer-scale single-crystal domains can form as isolated faceted islands or merge together to achieve full monolayer coverage. We have discovered a new crystal structure of borophene, with ten boron atoms and two hexagonal vacancies in the unit cell. First-principle calculations indicate that charge transfer rather than covalent bonding binds 2D boron to the copper surface, and confirm its integrity and uniformity The electronic band structure features multiple anisotropic tilted Dirac cones, heralding emergent quantum fermions.

Electronic properties of epitaxial La 1- x Sr x RhO 3 thin films

Here, we report on the synthesis and electronic properties of epitaxial perovskite La 1- x Sr x RhO 3 thin films. Thin films with a Sr content ranging from $\textit{x}$ = 0 to 0.5 have been grown using molecular beam epitaxy. Transport and x-ray photoemission spectroscopy data reveal an insulator-metal-insulator transition, accompanied by a $\textit{p-}$ to $\textit{n}-$ type carrier change observed in Hall measurements. Combined with theoretical calculations, we find that the addition of Sr does not directly dope carriers into the conduction band, but rather induces localized Rh 4$\textit{d}$ states within the LaRhO 3 band gap. The bandwidth of the impurity band increases with Sr content, eventually causing the valence band (VB) and the localized Rh 4$\textit{d}$ band to overlap, which explains the first insulator-to-metal transition occurring at $\textit{x}$ = 0.35. For Sr content $\textit{x}$ > 0.4, possible cation ordering results in an increase of the gap between the VB and the Rh 4$\textit{d}$ band, leading to the second metal-to-insulator transition. We map out the electronic phase diagram of the Sr-doped LaRhO 3 system and suggest strategies to engineer the electronic states in rhodate systems via delocalizing the Rh 3+ states.

Identifying crystal structures and chemical reactions at the interface of stanene on Bi 2 Te 3

Synthesizing monolayers and heterostructures is an enabling approach to extract new physical phenomena from bulk materials. Among the structures amenable to this approach is stanene, which is a monolayer of tin, similar to graphene, and has been predicted to host one-dimensional topological states at its edges. Stanene can be tuned by decorating with different adatoms, which makes it a promising platform on which to engineer topological devices. Here, we deposit Sn on Bi 2 Te 3 and characterize the growth using anomalous synchrotron x-ray scattering and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). X-ray diffraction data reveal the formation of epitaxial Sn-based structures, along with penetration of Sn into the Bi 2 Te 3 , with Sn intercalating between the upper 10 Bi 2 Te 3 quintuple layers. Additionally, XPS data show deposited Sn reacting to form SnTe and Bi at the Bi 2 Te 3 surface. The calculated heat of reaction for Sn and Bi2Te3 is consistent with an exothermic reaction to SnTe and Bi. Using thermodynamic calculations as a guide, we identify several candidate substrates that can stabilize the stanene phase.

Large-area single-crystal sheets of borophene on Cu(111) surfaces

Borophene, a theoretically proposed two-dimensional (2D) boron allotrope has attracted much attention as a candidate material platform for high-speed, transparent and flexible electronics. It was recently synthesized, on Ag(111) substrates and studied by tunneling and electron spectroscopy. However, the exact crystal structure is still controversial, the nanometre-size single-crystal domains produced so far are too small for device fabrication and the structural tunability via substrate-dependent epitaxy is yet to be proven. We report on the synthesis of borophene monitored in situ by low-energy electron microscopy, diffraction and scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) and modelled by ab initio theory. We resolved the crystal structure and phase diagram of borophene on Ag(111), but found that the domains remain nanoscale for all growth conditions. However, by growing borophene on Cu(111) surfaces, we obtained large single-crystal domains, up to 100 μm 2 in size. The crystal structure is a novel triangular network with a concentration of hexagonal vacancies of η = 1/5. Our experimental data, together with first principles calculations, indicate charge-transfer coupling to the substrate without significant covalent bonding. Lastly, our work sets the stage for fabricating borophene-based devices and substantiates the idea of borophene as a model for development of artificial 2D materials.
