Preassembly Of Insulating Tiles

Concept for preassembling high-temperature insulating tiles speeds and simplifies installation and repair and reduces damage from handling. Preassembly concept facilitates placement of tiles on gently contoured surfaces as well as on flat ones. Tiles bonded to nylon mesh with room-temperature-vulcanizing silicon rubber. Spacing between tiles is 0.03 in. Applications include boilers, kilns, and furnaces.

Impact-Resistant Ceramic Coating

Refractory fibers more than double strength of coating. Impact strengths of ceramic coatings increase with increasing whisker content. Silicon carbide whiskers clearly produce largest increase, and improvement grows even more with high-temperature sintering. Coating also improves thermal and mechanical properties of electromagnetic components, mirrors, furnace linings, and ceramic parts of advanced internal-combustion engines.

Waterproofing Agents for Silica Tiles

Waterproofing agent methyltrimethoxysilane applied to silica thermal insulation tiles in simple vapor-deposition process. Other waterproofing agents in same series include methylsiloxane and hexamethyldisilazane. Originally developed for insulating tiles for spacecraft, agents also find uses in roofing tiles, insulation for buildings or solar-energy systems, or solar reflectors.

Longer shelf life for ceramic slurries

Viscosity of ceramic-coating slurries containing organic acrylate viscosity-control agent is stabilized for over 2 months by addition of ammonium hydroxide without significant changes.

High-temperature waterproofing for tiles

Vapor-deposited coating protects silica tiles against water vapor up to 800 degrees Fahrenheit. Degradation products formed do not affect optical properties of coating. Application method makes it particularly suitable for fragile components.

Fabrication and Improvement of Lmsc's All-silica RSI

The LI-1500 and LI-900 all silica RSI materials have made the transition from laboratory to manufacturing operation. Improvements in both quality and reproducibility have been achieved. The LI-1500 material has displayed superior reliability in evaluations conducted at various facilities. The dependable performance of the material is attributed to the adherence to the stringent requirements of the numerous material, process, and product control evaluations and inspection points performed during manufacture.
