HOPE: An On-Line Piloted Handling Qualities Experiment Data Book

A novel on-line database for capturing most of the information obtained during piloted handling qualities experiments (either flight or simulated) is described. The Hyperlinked Overview of Piloted Evaluations (HOPE) web application is based on an open-source object-oriented Web-based front end (Ruby-on-Rails) that can be used with a variety of back-end relational database engines. The hyperlinked, on-line data book approach allows an easily-traversed way of looking at a variety of collected data, including pilot ratings, pilot information, vehicle and configuration characteristics, test maneuvers, and individual flight test cards and repeat runs. It allows for on-line retrieval of pilot comments, both audio and transcribed, as well as time history data retrieval and video playback. Pilot questionnaires are recorded as are pilot biographies. Simple statistics are calculated for each selected group of pilot ratings, allowing multiple ways to aggregate the data set (by pilot, by task, or by vehicle configuration, for example). Any number of per-run or per-task metrics can be captured in the database. The entire run metrics dataset can be downloaded in comma-separated text for further analysis off-line. Effect of lift-to-drag ratio in pilot rating of the HL-20 landing task

A man-in-the-loop simulation study of the handling qualities of the HL-20 lifting-body vehicle was made in a fixed-base simulation cockpit at NASA Langley Research Center. The purpose of the study was to identify and substantiate opportunities for improving the original design of the vehicle from a handling qualities and landing performance perspective. Using preliminary wind-tunnel data, a subsonic aerodynamic model of the HL-20 was developed. This model was adequate to simulate the last 75-90 s of the approach and landing. A simple flight-control system was designed and implemented. Using this aerodynamic model as a baseline, visual approaches and landings were made at several vehicle lift-to-drag ratios. Pilots rated the handling characteristics of each configuration using a conventional numerical pilot-rating scale. Results from the study showed a high degree of correlation between the lift-to-drag ratio and pilot rating. Level 1 pilot ratings were obtained when the L/D ratio was approximately 3.8 or higher.

Investigation of the launch pad abort capabilities of the HL-20 lifting body

The capability of the HL-20 lifting body spacecraft to perform an abort maneuver from the launch pad to a horizontal landing was studied at NASA Langley Research Center. This study involved both piloted and batch simulation models of the vehicle. A point-mass model of the vehicle was used for trajectory optimization studies. The piloted simulation was performed in the Visual Motion Simulator in fixed-base mode. A candidate maneuver was developed and refined for the worst-case launch-pad-to-landing-site geometry using an iterative procedure of off-line maneuver analysis followed by piloted evaluations and heuristic improvements to the candidate maneuver. The resulting maneuver demonstrates the launch site abort capability of the HL-20 and dictates requirements for nominal abort motor performance. The sensitivity of the maneuver to variations in several design parameters was documented.

Utilization of simulation tools in the HL-20 conceptual design process

The role of simulations in the design of the HL-20, the crew-carrying unpowered lifting-body component of the NASA Personnel Launch System, is reviewed and illustrated with drawings and diagrams. Detailed consideration is given to the overall implementation of a real-time simulation of the HL-20 approach and landing phase, the baseline and experimental control laws used in the flight-control system, autoland guidance and control laws (vertical and lateral steering), the control-surface mixer and actuator model, and simulation results. The simulations allowed identification and correction of design problems with respect to the position of the landing gear and the original maximum L/D ratio of 3.2.

Piloted simulator studies of the HL-20 Lifting Body

An overview is presented of the concept, design and development of the NASA Langley Lifting Body, and the flight simulator studies that have been performed. Attention is given to the aerodynamic shape of the HL-20, vehicle and simulator/cockpit description, and evolution of the HL-20 aerodynamic model. The flight simulation studies have demonstrated the HL-20 to be a viable design for accomplishing precise, unpowered, horizontal landings.

Radio frequency interference survey over the 1.0-10.4 GHz frequency range at the Goldstone-Venus Development Station

The results of a low sensitivity Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) survey carried out at the Venus Station of the Goldstone Communications Complex are reported. The data cover the spectral range from 1 GHz to 10.4 GHz with a 10-kHz instantaneous bandwidth. Frequency and power levels were observed using a sweep-frequency spectrum analyzer connected to a 1-m diameter antenna pointed at zenith. The survey was conducted from February 16, 1987 through February 24, 1987.

Power density measurements in the near field of the DSS 13 26-meter antenna

Power density measurements were made at Deep Space Station (DSS) 13 in the near field of the 26-m antenna to determine if radio frequency (rf) fields generated by the 20-kW transmitters could be responsible for the failure of three solid state rf amplifiers. These amplifiers are used in the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) Radio Spectrum Surveillance System, which is currently located at the site. Measurements were made independently for one transmitter at 7150 MHz, and both transmitters together. Measurement results are tabulated and compared with predicted power densities under the measurement conditions. The results agree with the predictions within a factor of two. The predictions appear to give worst case values. Measurements indicated that amplifier failures are not attributable to the transmitter.

Special activity utilization of GDSCC antennas during 1981

The activities are categorized as advanced systems program, radio astronomy program, crustal dynamics program, and operations and support activities. The goals of each of the activities that received tracking support at Goldstone during 1981 are discussed. All Goldstone stations (DSSs 11, 12, 13 and 14) provided a total of 2353.55 hours of support to special activities during the period.

The International Ozone Intercomparison Program

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has endorsed a number of intercomparison project activities in recent years as a part of its Global Ozone Research and Monitoring Project. The present investigation is concerned with an intercomparison of rocket borne measurement techniques in continuation of that overall effort. The objectives of this investigation were to compare the performance of rocket borne instruments, via a set of simultaneous intercomparisons of various rocket instruments under at least two sets of conditions. In order to accomplish the objectives and to aid in validating the historical data, six daytime sensors from each participant were flown. In addition, two of the participants (Australia and U.S.) provided nighttime sensor measurements. Attention is given to Wallops Flight Center instrumentation and launch support, the Triad Series, The Morning Series, and the Nighttime Series.

Special activity utilization of GDSCC antennas during 1980

In addition to direct spacecraft project support, the GDSCC antennas also support special activities. These activities can be categorized as advanced system program, crustal dynamics program, and radio astronomy program activities. The goals of these types of activities that received tracking support at Goldstone are discussed. All Goldstone stations (DSSs 11, 12, 13, and 14) provided a total of 2814.5 tracking hours to special activities during the period January through December 1980.

Utilization of the Venus Station (DSS 13) 26 meter antenna during CY 1979

The various activities for which the Venus Station's 26 m antenna was used are described and the number of manned tracking hours devoted to each activity are given. A brief description of the goal of each activity supported is provided, and, where appropriate, the observing technique is summarized. Projects involving spacecraft tracking, advanced systems development, and radio astronomy are included.

DSN research and technology support

The ongoing activities at the Venus Station (DSS 13) and the Microwave Test Facility (MTF) discussed include: (1) equipment implementation for unattended operation at DSS 13; (2) salvaging of a 20-kW klystron, at a cost savings of several thousand dollars by the DSN High Power Transmitter Facility; (3) extensive tracking activities with the 26-m antenna including DSN Platform Parameters, Multistation Planetary Radar, Helios II Spectrum Broadening Analysis, VLBI Validation, Planetary Radio Astronomy, and Pulsar Rotation Constancy, for a total time of 219-1/4 observing hours; (4) clock synchronization transmissions from the DSS 13 master clock to the overseas 64-m antenna complexes and special implementation activities in support of PV-78; and (5) implementation of a hydrogen maser frequency standard and the pathfinder installation of a utility control system (UCS) and significant station modification and maintenance.

DSN research and technology support

The activities of the Venus Station (DSS 13) and the Microwave Test Facility (MTF) during the period October 11, 1976, through February 13, 1977, are discussed. A significant effort on implementation of equipment for the planned conversion of DSS 13 to unattended operation is discussed. The Receiver and Microwave Subsystem are near completion, and the new feedcone and position encoders are implemented onto the 26-m antenna. Support of the 400-kW X-band radar, located at DSS 14, is reported, and the activities of the DSN High Power Transmitter Maintenance Facility (HPTMF), located at DSS 13 and MTF, are discussed. The successful completion of the first series of observations planned for VLBI validation is reported and significant station maintenance activities are covered. Clock synchronization transmissions to DSS 43 and DSS 63 are reported, and an evaluation of any pointing errors in the 26-m antenna position transducer are made.

DSN research and technology support

Continuing remote controlled pulsar observations are noted, along with routine observations of 22 pulsars. Preliminary installation of equipment for planned unattended operation of the Venus Station is reported, along with extensive measurements and performance evaluation of the 26-m antenna. Support of the X-band radar at the Mars Station (DSS 14), and stability and reliability testing of the DSS 13 receiving system is reported. Klystron testing and other DSN support activities of the DSN High-Power Transmitter Maintenance Facility are noted, along with energy conservation modifications to two buildings at DSS 13. Radio Science experiment support included Planetary Radio Astronomy, Pulsar Rotation Constancy, Interstellar Microwave Spectroscopy, and Very Long Baseline Interferometry observations. An increased schedule of clock synchronization transmissions, planned on five-day centers, is noted, as 39 transmissions were made to Australia, DSS 43, and Spain, DSS 63.

DSN research and technology support

The activities of the Venus Station (DSS 13) and the Microwave Test Facility (MTF) during the period April 19 through June 13, 1976, are discussed and progress noted. Continuing reliability testing and computer program refinement of the remote controlled, unattended automated pulsar observing station is noted, along with routine observations of 17 pulsars. Radar observations of a geostationary satellite are reported, along with the routine automatic testing of the stability of the DSS 13 maser-receiving system. Additional testing of thermal characteristics of semiflexible coaxial cables is reported, along with phase stabilization measurements thereon. Routine support of the planetary radio astronomy experiment, with 43.25 hours of observations of Jupiter and various radio calibration sources, is reported, along with 18.75 hours of differential VLBI observations in conjunction with Australia, DSS 43. Modifications of the clock synchronization winterization system are reported, along with a discussion of the activities of the DSN High-Power Transmitter Maintenance Facility.
