Diffraction by fractally serrated apertures

An investigation of light diffracted by irregularly serrated apertures yields a closed-form analytical solution that confirms experimental recording of the diffracted patterns. These serrated apertures are modeled by a fractal function. Examples are given for both sinusoidal and fractal aperture perimeters with varying fractal dimension. Relations between the far-zone diffracted fields and the fractal dimension are examined.

Wave interactions with continuous fractal layers

Many natural structures possess self-similar multiscales which can be characterized by power law spectra. Under appropriate conditions, knowledge of the strength of these scale sizes provides information on the physical processes which formed these objects. In this paper, we investigate wave interactions with continuous fractal layers which model geological and variegated structures. Since fractal characteristics of the layers are embedded in the scattered field, they can be retrieved under appropriate conditions. This inversion can be performed in either the frequency or the time domain as desired.

Wave tilt sounding of multilayered structures

The relationship between the wave tilt and the electrical parameters of a multilayered structure is investigated. Particular emphasis is placed on the inverse problem associated with the sounding planetary surfaces. An inversion technique, based on multifrequency wave tilt, is proposed and demonstrated with several computer models. It is determined that there is close agreement between the electrical parameters used in the models and those in the inversion values.

Stability of higher-order Bragg interactions in active periodic media

The stability of waves in unbounded, longitudinally periodic media is studied for index and gain coupling. Time-independent periodic media are found to support both stable and absolutely unstable waves. The wave characteristics depend upon average gain or loss, coupling type, and Bragg order. The extended coupled waves equations provide explicit values of threshold, frequency, and temporal growth rate for instabilities at all Bragg resonances through the dispersion relation. Applications to multiharmonic periodicities and complex couplings are briefly discussed with particular note taken of possible reductions of the stability thresholds and removal of threshold degeneracies. Comparisons are made to the longitudinally bounded case of distributed feedback lasers.

Higher-order Bragg coupling in periodic media with gain or loss

Wave propagation in longitudinally periodic media with gain or loss is considered. An extended coupled-waves approach and a Floquet approach are used to study index and gain (or loss) coupling in periodic media at the first few Bragg resonances by the use of Brillouin diagrams. Phase speeding or slowing that is dependent upon the type of coupling occurs in periodic media. Even and odd resonances display different dispersion characteristics. Several examples of coupling due to multiharmonic periodicities are also covered. Coupling or feedback strength can be continuously varied by changing the relative phase of multiharmonic periodicities.

Bragg interactions in periodic media

The interaction of electromagnetic waves of wavelength lambda with periodic structures of spatial period lambda are studied. The emphasis of the work is on Bragg interactions where lambda approximately equal to 2 lambda/N and the Bragg order N takes on the values 1, 2,.... An extended coupled waves (ECW) theory is developed for the case N greater or equal to 2 and the results of the theory are found to compare favorably with the exact results of Floquet theory. Numerous numerical results are displayed as Brillouin diagrams for the first few Bragg orders. Moreover, explicit expressions for coupling coefficients, bandgap shifts and bandgap widths are derived for singly periodic media. Particular note is taken of phase speeding effects.

Floquet and coupled-waves analysis of higher-order Bragg coupling in a periodic medium

The paper considers wave propagation in longitudinally periodic media near the first- and higher-order Bragg resonances. An extended coupled-waves (ECW) approach is applied to media with single or multiharmonic periodicities and is numerically compared with the Floquet theory. The ECW approach predicts coupling coefficients that vary as the magnitude of the perturbation raised to the power of the Bragg order. Explicit expressions are also given for the band-gap width and band-gap shift for all Bragg orders. A number of applications are discussed.

Transients in a periodic slab - Coupled waves approach

The reflection and transmission of rectangular and Gaussian pulses impinging on a periodically stratified slab are studied and a number of examples are illustrated and analyzed. The coupled waves approach is used to derive the reflection and transmission coefficient, then the fast Fourier transform is used to illustrate the transient responses.
